To all whom it may concern Be it known that I, MARIO CAnnAU, a citizen of the Republic of Uruguay, and a resi dent of Montevideo, Uruguay, have invented a new and Improved Umbrella, of which the following is a full, clear, and exact de scription.

My invention relates to that class of umbrellas in which the rod is formed of pivoted sections so that the tip section carrying the umbrella when the latter is raised, will be olfset at one side of the handle, parallel therewith.

It is a design of my invention to improve in various particulars, umbrellas of the character indicated, to the end that efliciency in operation and adjustment may be promoted.

The invention will be particularly ex plained in the specific description hereinafter to be given.

Reference is to be had to the accompanying drawings forming a part of this specification, in which similar characters of reference indicate corresponding parts in all the views.

Figure 1 is an elevation of an umbrella embodying my invention, the umbrella covering being omitted, and the tip section being adjusted in a position ofi'set from the handle section; Fig. 2 is a fragmentary view in elevation, with parts in section, the sec tions of the umbrella rod being in alinement; Fig. 3 is a fragmentary view with parts in section and on an enlarged scale, showing the joint between the tip section and the intermediate section; Fig. 4: is a fragmentary sectional view showing the joint between the handle section and the intermediate sec tion, said parts being at an angle to each other; Fig. 5'is a view with the parts ar-- ranged as in Fig. 4:, the view being taken at right angles to Fig. 4; Fig. 6 is a side elevation of the joint shown in Figs. 4. and 5,

with the sections in alinement; and Fig. 7 is a fragmentary perspective view of the end of the intermediate section adjacent to the handle section.

In forming an umbrella in accordance with my invention, the rod is made up of a handle section 10, an intermediate section 11, and a tip section 12 pivoted as hereinafter described, the tip section carrying the usual ribs 13 and braces 14, the braces being connected with an ordinary runner 15,

adapted to be sustained in an elevated position by the usual catch 15*.

The handle section 10 is provided at its upper end with a plate spring 16, inserted therein and ranging longitudinally thereof, to terminate substantially flush with the upper end of said section, the spring being secured by a transverse pin 17. The adjacent end of the intermediate section 11 terminates 111 a reduced, flattened member 18 received in an opening 18 in the handle section 10,

and connected with the latter by a transverse pm 19. The terminal 18 presents squared faces-20, 21 at right angles to each other adapted to respectively bear against the spring 16, the one face being presented to the spring when the intermediate section 11 is in alinement with the handle section 10, and the other face 21 being presented to the spring when the intermediate section is turned at right angles, as in Fig. l. When the sections are in alinement, a shoulder 22 at the base. of the flattened terminal 18 seats on the upper end of the spring 16. In the turning of the intermediate section on its pivot 19, clearance is provided for by forming a rounded surface 23 adjacent to the shoulder 22.

The outer end of the intermediate section 11 is joined to the tip section 12 by means similar to those just described, there being a spring 2 1 on the intermediate section 11 secured by a spring 25, and a reduced fiattened end 26 on the tip section 12 is received in the end of the intermediate section and secured thereto by a transverse pivot pin 27. As in the first-described joint also, the tip section 12 has a shoulder 22 to seat against the end of the spring 24, a rounded surface 30 is formed similar to the surface 23, to provide clearance, and squared faces 28, 29, on the terminal 26 are adapted to be presented to the side of the spring 24 in the two positions of the sections.

When the tip section is offset and brought at right angles to the intermediate section, as in Fig. 3, the shoulder 22 seats on a flat surface 31 (Fig. 6) formed on a side of the intermediate section 11. It will thus be seen that the umbrella may be supported co-axially with the handle section, or oifset, with its center at one side of the handle section.

Having thus described my invention, I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent:

An umbrella rod formed of pivoted sections comprising a handle section, a tip sec tion, and an intermediate section, there being on one section at each joint a plate spring disposed parallel with the said section, and the terminals of each of the adjacent sections presenting fiat faces at right angles to each other, the one face being disposed longitudinally of the section and the other face transversely, to be engaged by said spring when the sections are turned on their pivots, the said adjacent sections furthermore presenting each a transverse shoulder parallel With the transverse flat face and normal to the longitudinal flat face said shoulder being adapted to bear against the end of the said plate spring When the sections are in alinement, there being a clearance recess concaved transversely of the section and directly adjacent to the said shoulder.
