To all whom it may concern.
Be it known that I, HOWARD M. BARBER,
-a citizen of the United States, and resident ofStonington, in the county of New Londen and State of Connecticut, have invented a new and. useful Improvement in Sheet Delivery Mechanism for Printing-Machines, of which the following is a specification.
Theobject of my invention is to provide novel means for insuring the delivery of the sheets from a sheet delivery cylinder on to a sheet receiving table.
In cases where sheets are delivered directly from a delivery cylinder on to a sheet receiving table, it has been previously necessary to provide more or less compllcated means for insuring the proper delivery of the said sheets. This is especially true where the sheets are delivered successively with only a slight space separating each sheet from the following one.
This present invention is directed to a very simple arrangement for insuring the proper delivery of the sheets, said arrangement including an air blast directed a ainst each sheet from the inside of the de ivery cylinder in a way to force the back edge of thesheet which has by far the greater distance to fall from the cylinder, away from the cylinder so that the back edge of the sheet will not interfere with the delivery of the next succeeding sheet.
A practical embodiment of the invention is represented in' the accompanying drawings, in which,
Figure 1 represents a sheet delivery mechanism in side elevation, Fig. 2 is a longitudinal vertical section through the same, Fig. 3 is a partial front view of the mechanism, Fig. 4 is a detail view of the geared connection between the several operative parts, and Fig. 5 is a detail view showingthe means for opening the grippers on the transfer cylinder at proper times to receive the sheets from the cutters and transfer the same to the delivery cylinder grippers.
The rotary cutters for severing the sheets from the web are denoted by 1, 1*, the transfer cylinder for receiving the sheets from the cutters and transferring them to the delivery cylinder, is denoted by 2, the delivery cylinder is denoted by 3, and the sheet receiving table'is denoted by 4:. In the present instance the rotary cutters 1, 1* are provided with three sets of co-acting blades 5,
the transfer cylinder is shown as provided with two-sets of grippers 6 and the-delivery cylinder 3 is shown as provided with four sets of grippers 7. The rotary cutters are driven together by intermeshing gears 8, 9. he delivery cylinder is made hollow and an axially arranged air blast pipe 10 enters the cylinder through one of its hollow gudgoons 11. This axially arranged air blast pipe is provided within the cylinder with a plurality of nozzles 12 arranged to direct blasts of air successively through slots 13 through the walls of the delivery cylinder 3, at points spaced from. each set of grippers 7. This axially arranged pipe 10 is connected by a pipe connection 14 with any suitable source of air pressure supply, such for instance, as a power actuated blowing engine 15. I
The geared driving connection between turn meshes with a gear 28 fixed on the shaft 29 of the rotary cutter l.
A stationary cam 30 is arranged in'position to open each set of grippers-6 on the transfer cylinder 2, by engaging astud roller 31 on a lever 32, of each set of grippers. A spring 33 serves tohold the grippers normally closed. This cam 30 is arranged to open the grippers 6 to receive the sheets from the rotary cutters and also opens the grippers to deliver the sheets to the delivery cylinder grippers 7. In thepresent instance the cam 30 is shown as arranged to open the grippers 6 to deliver the sheets to the delivery cylinder grippers and keep the said grippers 6 open until they have received the sheets from the rotary cutters.-

The sheet'receiving table 4 may be provided with any well known or approved 10gging mechanism and no specific description thereof will be made herein as it forms no part of the present invention.
In operation, as the sheets are brought down into position to be delivered on to the sheet receiving table 4, the blasts of air l t-hrough the nozzle 12 will be directed through their respective slots 13 against the back edges of the sheets, thus forcing the back edges away from the peripheryof the cylinder so that when the grippers 7 open to 0 release the advance edges of the sheets, the
sheets will be delivered quickly and freely on do the sheet receiving table, thus making way for the next succeeding sheet and per- 1 mitt-ing a very rapid delivery of the sheets from the delivery cylinder.
By the term cylinder I intend to cover any operative device for carrying the sheets through the prescribed paths and by the term table I intend to cover any surface for receiving the sheets. t
It is evident that various changes might be resorted to in the construction, form and arrangement of the various parts without departing from the spirit and scope of my invention; hence I do not wish to limit myself strictly to the structure herein set forth, but
What I claim is: 1. A sheet delivery mechanism including a rotary hollow cylinder arranged to deliver the sheets at a predetermined point, said e 1- inder having slots through its walls, an a stationary device located within thecylinder arranged to direct a blast of air throu 11 said walls against the back edges of t e sheets for blowing the same away from the cylinder as the sheets are delivered.
2. A- sheet delivery mechanism including a rotary hollow cylinder arranged to deliver the sheets-at a predetermined point, said cylinder having a plurality of sets of grippers around its periphery and a plurality of slots through the walls of the cylinder between said sets of grippers and a stationary device arranged to direct successive blasts of air through said slots for blowing the sheets away from the cylinder asv they. are delivered.
