Description

ttltitrdtntrt @met @imita "SAMUEL" asooeelns, or BALTIMORE, MARYLAND.
Letters Patent No. 107,821,'dated ASeptember 27, 1870.
iMPRQvEMEN-r nvf nEFmeERA-rons.
The Schedule referred to in these Letters Patent and making partici' the same.
To all whbnt t't may conce-rn: n Bc it known that I, SAMUEL 1t. ScoGGINs, of Baltimore, in the county of Baltimore and State of Maryland, have invented 'a'new and Improved Refrigerator;
and I do hereby declare the following to be afull, clear, and exact description of the same, reference being had tothe accompanying drawing making 4a 'part of this specification,l in which- "Figurel is a vertical section cutting through 'the 'linewvin g.2; .i f i Figure'Z isa transverse section lcutting through `line'y y in lig. 1; and
Figure 3 is a horizontal section, made oblong, and
provided with air iuternalchamber for the freezing materiah This invention consists `inthe construction, hereinafter described, ot` a doublefcase oi' metal, and the arrangement of it within a wooden case,.inj snc'h a manner that a freezing-mixture, such as salt and ice, may be introduced into the space between the interior and exterior metal cases, or in one or more metal chambers placed within the double case, and that the water produced in the space between the metal cases by the thawing of the freezing-mixture, or water produced in the interior of the metal case from any causefwhat-l ever, may rnn oi through pipes attached tothe double ease,4 and penetrating the bottom of the wooden case, the objectof the invention being to produce areii'igerator that will keep food, fish, &c.,' in a frozen condition.y
i Inthe drawing- 1 a is the outer wooden case, provided with theholes b and c, and the hinged cover 1l.
i The hole b is forV ventilation. The hole c for the reception of the pipes attached to tne double case e.
fis the outer metal case, provided with a hinged cover, g; Its bottom,`h, consists of four downwardly converging sides, and `is provided with `the pipe t'.
lThe bottom j of the inner case kcorresponds in i shape with the bottomof th-e case f, and is provided with the pipe l, whichis `looselysheathed within the pipe The sides of `the casek, fromy the point m `downward, are parallelwith the .sides of the case f. From the point '1n upward, they converge and meet the l `cover g,'in`iorder that the freezing-mixture may be more` readily introduced intothe compartments made by the partition vo.
The cases f and k are formed into a'double case, n, and made to maintain their relative ,positions by bemediately around the pipe l.
p are frames, introduced when food only is desired to be kept. They are used generally in the smallersized refrigerators. The food is passed down the vertical center ofthe refrigerator and placed upon the frames p. Y v
In keeping large quantities of {ish-packed closely together, there is danger that those in the center of" the mass will becomev decayed. In order to prevent this, I place one or more chambers, q, in the case a, shown inl iig. 3, pack the lish around the chamber, and ll the compartments, between the partitions vand the chamber or chambers q, Vwith the freezing-mixture.
In a. refrigerator four feet square, I leave not more than two (2) inches space between the cases f audit. In larger ones the space should be in proportion.
I construct the' metal cases of galvanizedsheet metal, and place a.snitable frame within the outer wooden case a, for the bottom of the. metal case to. rest upon.
The .outer case a and double caseta, may be constructed either rectangular o r cylindrical in form. The walls of the case a may bcmadeof several thick nesses, the several thicknesses being arranged either in Contact, or with an air or felt-chamber between downwardly-converging bot-toms hf and j, thepipes iV and l, and partitions o, the frames p, one or more vchambers q, and the inolosingwoodenca'se a, provided with holes b and c, all constructed and combined substantially as and for thepurpose hereinbefore specified.
SAMUEL SOOGGINS.
