Description

acaasara aient @tithe vAmsfnlrr RscnIrLiNe; or E VANSVI'LLE, INDIANA.
i LLiana Patent No. 1o`7,`s19,l1aed spambr 27,4870.
` lMeRovEMENT 11N SPRING-masseren moons ac.
The `Sozziielixle referred to irl-these Letters Patent and making part of the same.
I, ALBERT F. ScmFFL1NG,`of Evansville, county of Yanderbnrg, State of `Indiana, lhave invented van Im. proved Spring-Hinge for Doors, &c., of which the fol-` sections,.one having a cam and the other a plate,
which is pressed against the cam, so*` as to tend to maintain theiatter in aeertan` position; `and My invention consists inconstructing the differi entparts in the peculiar mannerfnlly described hereafter, so as to pioducea hinge which is simple in construction, cheap, durable, and notliable to get ont of 'order'.
Description. of the ccompanying Drawing.
u Figure 1 is a sectionalview of my improved springhinge;i g I l i Figure 2, a plan view of the saine; y
Figure 3,a plan view, partly'in' section, showing. the hinge turned lin one direction in full lines, and Vin .the opposite direction iirdotted lines; and i i `Figure-#tis 'an edge view of'ay modified form of hinge. p
. General Description. `A represents the stationary leaf, or rthat portion of the hinge which is secured to the post orlframework towhich -the gate, door, or` shutter i's hung;- and.,v .i '-B represents the movable leaf of the hinge, piv- `oted to the pin or projection a of the leal` A, and arranged for attachment to the upper or lower `edge ot' the gate, 85e., hy means of screws or nails, which are passed tlirongli'.holes b b` bof the `said leaf, the strain upon these screws or nails .being relieved by `lugs c c oflthe hinge, which enter thewood-work of `the door or gater` .'Jfhe.stationaryrrleafA` of the hinge consists of three main portions, namely, a- -tube, (l, which is inserted into an opening in the postor .frame; a `flange, dl, which bears against and is secured to the 'said post or frame by ,screws or other. fastenings; and a horizontal ledge, cl2, strengthened by sidciianges e, and supporting .the pivot u., to which the leaf Bishung.
. ment, B', flattened in the center at the point f, and
having rounded ends f". l 3
Against this enlargement' bears a fiat plate, G, which is'secured to or forms part of a rod, G', `adapted to the interior .ofthe tube D, and having.;` coiled upon it a strong spiral spring, hi, `which hears against th'e rear edge of the tube and against the plate C, and thus The `latter has at its inner end a 4cani-like enlargehas a constant tendency to `force the latten-toward and hold it tightly against the enlargement B of the movable leaf.
This pressure of the plate O against the flat portion fof "the cam-like enlargement tends to hold the movable leaf rmly in the positionshown in gs. V1
and 2, and 'to consequently retain the door, shutter,
lor* gate-to which the said'leaf is secured, in a closed position. 1 v
'llie'door or gate can, lioweifer, `be turned in either direction, as indicated by the full and dotted lines in fiig. 3, but such motion will cause a pressure of the camlikerenlargement against the plate C, and a consequent forcing back of the latter, and. compressing of the spring hl, ,so that, when thev door is released, the spring thus compressed will act withincreased force against the plate C and cam-like enlargement, and will cause an immediate closing' of the door, and the action vwill be the same in whichever direction th door has been turned. p
In order to prevent any unequal strain .upon .or twisting of the plate C, it is provided underneath with a lug, i, arranged to slide in a longitudinal `slot ofthe A ledge d2.
lhe above hinge fis, it will be evident, especially applicablev to the doors of hotels and restaurants, and to garden or other gates, which it is desirable should heself-closing and capable of being opened in either direction. It can' also be applied to doors and gates generally, or to shutters, or, in fact, in any case where it is desirable to use a spring in connection with a hinge.
It is not absolutely necessary that `a 4spiral spring Y should be used for forcing up the plate C, as any other suitable spring inightbe substituted for the same; nor is it essential thatthe leaf B should he arranged forattaclnnent to the top or bottom only of a gate or door, as described, as it can be bent atright angles, V
as shown in iig. 4, in order to'ada-ptit to the vinner edge of the gate, or it might be'arianged vertically, or on edge, instead of horizontally, as shown in the first three figures of the drawing, in order to adapt it to the side of the gate.
Claim.
The section A with its tube d, ang'es fl lli, and pin a, in combination wit-h the section B and its cam B',
lIn testimony whereof, I have signed my name to this specification in the. presence of two subscribing I and with the sliding plate C, operated. by a spring, as set forth.
