BOX FOR ELECTRIC CONDUITS.
Specification.of Letters Patent. v
Application filed October 6,
1910. ySerial No. 585,678.v
To all whom, t may concern.'
Be it known that I, HOWARD J. WHITE, of San Francisco, California, have invented certain new and' useful Improvements in Boxes for Electric Conduite, whereof the following is a specification.
This invention .relates to termnal'boxes for electric conduit connections, such, for example, as are laced in the ceilings of rooms for connection of the electroliers.
The object of the invention is t-o produce adaptable to a multiplicity of positions, and
forms.
In carrying out the invention I make a dual box of two shells, one of which is perforate, and the other mperforate. The perforate shell I make of heavier material than the other, whicliI make of thin nia-y ter with any of the perforations 'of the thicker shell, and thus provide an ope-ning for the conduit 'with which itis desired to connect.
Other features of the invention, as also the structural details, will appear in the accompanyingdrawings, and the description In the drawings Figure 1 is a sectional elevation, taken centrally of a box and shows a perforate inner shell, an iinperforate outer shell and a cover, with the method of fasbut shows also two conduitsl applied to the outer shell being reamed out at two points for their ends. Figs. 3 and 4 are, respectively, cross-sections taken at the lines, 33 and 4-4, of Fig. 1.
In the figures :-1 represents a cup shaped shell perforated at'suitable points with holes 2 of a size to receive the ends of conduits, and with such other holes, as 3, as may be desirable for fastening devices.
4l' represents an im'perforate shell titl-ing over the outside of shell 1, and made of thinner material. The two .shells may be conping in a galvanizing or tinning bath, or otherwise.
l 5 are center punch marks in shell 4, registering with the various perfor-ations of shell l.
6 represents a cover vor closure for the mouth of the two shells, which may be peiforated, as at 7, for electrolier connections, or other purpose.
The manner of securing the cove-r. 6 to the shells is as follows, vim-8, 8, are two cleats, which may be made of strap'iron, or brass, or other material. The ends of these cleats are turned at right Iangles and engaged 1n holes 3 in the 'sidesl of shell 1.-
'lhe body'of each cleat extendsl down alone the side of the shell, and. its lower end .is turned inward across the lower edge of wires .15, for connection to whatever fixture is to be applied to the boX. It 'having been decided at what point the conduit is to enter Patented Nov. 11, 1913.
Thus the cleats, ,are inclosed v the box, the outery shell lis perforated at that point by inserting the end of a reainer in the appropriate punch mark 5 and reaming out a hole in register with the corresponding hole 2 of the innerA shell. lThe end of thee'v conduit, which is threaded and provided with a nut 16, is inserted into the perforation thus provided, and a cap 17 screwed upon its end thus clamping the` box between itself andthe nut 16. The cap 17 is perforated for the passage of the-wires 15, and the hole is rounded to prevent mutilation of the wires. v
Having thus described my invention, and believing that I have made a new and valuable improvement in the art to which it pertains, I claim 1. In a conduit box, in combination, a perforate shell and an imperforate shell. the iinperforate shell being outside of arid inclosing the perforate shell.
2. In a conduit box, in combination, a perforate shell and an imperforate shell, the imperforate surrounding the perforate shell and provided with punch marks oppoi site its perforations.
3. In aconduit box, in combination an 4 inner and outer shell, a cover for said shells, means to secure said cover to said shells consistng of metallic strips' located between hm'e hereto set my hand this 24th day of said shells, the ends' of which are turned in- September, 1910, in the presence of wit- Wardly, said inner shell provided with holes ness@ in the side theretof engaging 011e end of Said 5 strips and mear'ls pn the cover engaging the Witnesses;
opposite ends. i l ESTHER HARRIS,
In -testimonfl'that I claim the foregoing D. B. RICHARDS.
