This trough 3 may be, and preferably ismade of enameled metal, since the metal is, conveniently bent in desired form andtheenamel affords elec-J trieal insulation and likewise prevents rusting, etc. Within this. trough 10 I secure the resistance conductor 11, which conductor is I shown in the form offa spiral extending sub stantially throughout the length of the trough. The spiral is supported at intervals by supporting members '12. These support ing members consist'of a sleeve. portion 13 through which the spiral passes and a shank 14 which passes through the web member of the channel shaped trough. The end of the shank is split 50 as to provide wings 15 which are bent down to secure the member in place. The metal of the trough is pressed inward at 16 around the holefor receiving the supporting member and an insulating sleeve '17 is fitted in the depression. An insulating Washer '18 is on the'inner side of the depression. The shoulders19 on the supporting member bear against the washer 18 and when the Wings 15 are bent-down, as shown in Fig. 2, the support is held securely in place. The supportin member is thus insulated from the metal -ic trough andthe enamel coating of the trough is not depended upon for the necessary insulation. The ends of the spiral are connected to .ter-
units are placed side by side and secured together by a strip 22. It is obvious that the number of these strips 22 for holding the units together will depend upon the'length of the unit. The ends of the spirals in the adjacent troughs are connected together by connectors 23. These connections may be -made so that all of the spirals will be in series, or in any manner desired. By the employment of my invention any desired size or capacity of heater may be obtained by combining a suitable number of sections.
My invention will be found useful in connection with ovens, broilers and the like where it is desired that the unit be accessible and at the same time protected By Will suggest themselves to those skilled in the art Without departing from the spirit of my invention, the scope of which is set forth in the annexed claims.
What I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent of the United States, is,-
1. An electric heating unit comprising a channel shaped support, an electrical resistance suspended within said support from the web member thereof, and terminals for said resistance extending through the suspending member.
2. An electric heating unit comprising a channel shaped support, an electrical resistance coil suspended with-in said support from the Web member thereof, means for insulating the said coil from said support and terminals extending from coil through the suspending member.
. 3. A sectional electric heater comprising a plurality of channel shaped supports, each having an electrical resistance suspended within the same from the Web member there. of and insulated therefrom, terminals connected to each of said resistances extending" through the web members of said supports and means for mechanically connecting said members together.
