WATER-HEATER.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented Nov. LI, 1913.
Application filed March 4, 1912. Serial No. 681,481.
To all Iwhom t may concern:
Be it known that I, Josnrri F. JONES, a citizen of the United States, residing at Cleveland, county of Cuyahoga, State of Ohio, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Tater-Heaters, of which the following is the specification.
This invention relates to water heaters and its object is to provide means whereby a large percent-age of heat heretoforel wasted is utilized for raising the temperature of the water.
Another object is to provide detlecting means whereby the products of combustion can be directed or spread laterally among the sections containing the water, prior to the escape of the heat products from the heater.
Certain other features of the invention which are shown in the present drawings are more fully described and claimed in my copending application entitled Jackets for water heaters and the like, filed September 20, 1912, serial No. 721,362.
With these and other objects in View the invention consists of certain novel features of construction and combination of parts, which will be hereinafter more fully described and pointed out in the claims.
Figure I.-is a horizontal section on line 3-3 of Fig. IV. Fig. II.-is a horizontal view showing` portions of the several sections as arranged within the casing of the heater and looking down. Fig. IIL-shows a crosssectional view of a section on line 2 2 of Fig. I. Fig. IV.-shows a vertical view of a heater with a portion of the casing of the heater removed.
Referring to the ligures by characters of reference, A designates the body of one of a series of annular sections forming the water heater which is hollow to form the annular water chamber A. The opposite sides of the latter are connected by a single transverse hollow bar A, the interior construction of which clearly appears in Fig. III and includes an inclined partition disposed across the bar A so as to cause the water to liow completely around the annular portion of the section in order to pass through the same.
B designates one of a series of short solid battling lugs that project from the circumference of body A.
C designates a series of solid baffling bars extending across the open spaces between the inner walls of water chamber A and the outer walls of the water chamber in the bar A.
It is preferable to have the balliing lugs B and bars C so shaped as to expose two heating surfaces to the flames below as shown by B in Fig. IV, but I do not desire to be limited to such precise construction. The baliiing bars are furthermore formed at substantially right-angles to the tubular bars A5', so that by placing adjacent sections with said bars A at an angle. to each other, the solid bars C are criss-crossed as shown in Fig. II.
It will be seen that the heat products from the burner being drawn naturally up through the open spaces in each section of the heater will come in Contact with the several battling bars in the center of the sections and the lugs on the outside between the sections and the casing, and heating them the heat is communicated to the main water chamber. The bars prevent the escape of heat by being placed in such al manner as to present two heating surfaces to the products of combustion, and by alternating the position of the consecutive sections so that the bars of one section cover the open spaces of the section below, the products of combustion are deflected from one side to the other and a much greater heating surface is thereby gained for the water chambers and the amount of heat that escapes is reduced to a minimum.
The successive sections of the heater are so disposed as to bring the bars C in crisscross relation as shown in Fig. II, while the lugs B are staggered or out of line in a. vertical direction.
IIaving described my invention, what I claim as my invention is l. In a water heater, the combination of a series of suitably connected sections, each section including an annular chamber, a single diametrically extending hollow bar opening at its ends into the annular chamber, the har being provided intermediate its ends with alined inlet and outlet Openings, an inclined partition within said bar separating the inlet and outlet openings, the annular chamber being unconnected with the inlet and outlet openings except through the respective portions of said bar, a series of solid bailing bars extending across the open spaces between the hollow bar and the annular chamber, and a series of radially ont- Wardly extending lugs attached to said section around the outside of the saine.
2. In a Water heater, the combination of a series of suitably connected sections, each section including an annular chamber, a single diaxnetrically extending hollow bar opening at itsvend into the annular chamber, the bar being provided intermediate its ends With alined inlet and outlet openiiigs, an inclined partition within said bar separating the inlet and outlet openings, the annular chamber' being unconnected with the inlet and outlet openings except through the respective portions of said bar, a series of solid baffling bars extending across the open spaces between the hollow bar and the annular chamber, a series of radially outwardly extending lugs attached to said section around the outside of the same, adjacent Sections being placed with such hollow bars at an angle to each other so that such battling bars are criss-crossed.
In testimony whereof, I aHiX my signature in the presence of two Witnesses.
