PUMP-OPERATING MECHANISM.
' To all whom it may concern Be it known that 1, PAUL C. Nowa'rsnn, a cltizen of the United States, I'QSlCllIlg at Mukwonago, in the county of Waukesha,
Sta-te of lV-isconsin, have invented certain new and useful Improvementsin Pump-Opcrating Mechanism; and I do hereby declare the following tobe a full, clear, and exact description of theinvention, such as will enable others Skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.
This invention has relationto novel and useful improvements in pumps and more par ticularly to an improved drive mechanism therefor. j The primary object of the invention is evolved in. the provision of a drive mechae nism in which the piston has connection with a vertically movable rack while a pin-j ion or gear is rotatably drivento engage andreciprocate the rack whereby a longer stroke may be imparted to. the pump piston with comparatively little or less power than is required by an ordinary crank or eccentric operated pump.
Another object of the invention is to provide a rotatable drive shaft adapted for lateral sliding movement whereby a pinion carried on its inner end will continuously move around a novel form of rack member so as to convert a rotary motion of the drive shaft, driven from any suitable source, into a vertical reciprocating motion of the pump rod or piston.
lVith the above and other objects in view, the invention consists of certain combinations and arrangements of parts as will be hereinafter more fully described, claimed and illustrated in the accompanying drawings, in which:
Figure 1 is a front elevation of a pump having my improved drive mechanism connected thereto. Fig. 2 is a central vertical sectional view taken on the line 22 of Fig. 1. Fig. 3 is a top plan view of the device. Fig. t is a horizontal sectional view taken on the line 41: of Fig. 1. Fig. 5 is a horizontal sectional view taken on the line 55 of Fig. 1. Fig. 6 is a detail sectional view showing one of the teeth of the rack bar.
In illustrating the practical embodiment of the invention there is shown the upper portion or head of a pump 10 having the usual piston, not shown, working therein and connected to the piston rod 11 to which it Specification of Letters Patent.
- Application filed October 31, 1912.
Serial No. 728,926.
is desired to transmit reciprocable movement. avoid thezgreat disadvantages caused'by-the use of the ordinary crank disk or eccentric commonly used inpumps, whereby-the power necessary foroperating the same is consid Patented'Nov. a, was.
For this; purpose and in order to" erably increased and the stroke of the piston shortened, I provide-a casting embodying a supporting head 12 which is secured to the .pump cylinder 10 by set screws 13.
Formed integral with the supportinghead 12 is an upright 14 carrying at'itsr'upp'er end a horizontally disposed guide framei 15 of ,open form andwhich overhangs the pump as illustrated. These parts are formed as a single casting together with opposed side braces 16 which rigidly support the guide frame for receiving the working partsand sustaining. the jars incident to its operation in working the pump.
Detachably connected to the upper end of the pistonrod' by means of a set screw 17 is V the cross head 18 which is vertically movable in the guide frame and formed with opposite tongues 19movably engaged between the rear portion of the frame and guide blocks 20 carried by and coactingwith the latter to form guideways for receiving the cross head. The forward portion of the guide frame 15 is horizontally slotted to receive a sliding bearing, 21 which rotatably supports a horizontal drive shaft 22 in turn carrying on its inner end a pinion or gear 23. A rack bar 24: is secured to the forward face of the cross head and is formed of a plurality of rollers 25 having beveled heads 26 and each roller is rotatably supported on a bolt 27 the head of which prevents displacement of the rollers in each instance. The drive shaft is rotatably supported outwardly of the slotted portion of the frame in an enlarged bearing 28 carried at the upper end of a stationary arm 29 secured at its lower end to the supporting head and has a knuckle joint 22 to permit transverse movement of the pinion in its travel around the rotated by either of the means above described and by continuously rotating the pinion, the latter is caused to travel around the rack bar and impart vertical reciprocable movement to the latter to correspondingly move the piston of the pump. Thus, it will be seen that the length of the rack bar may be increased so that the length of the stroke may be comparatively indefinitely increased whereby a greater amount of lifting force either in water or air pumps is accomplished with the same amount of power.
It will be observed that the knuckle or universal joint 22' is located inwardly of the shaft bearing 38 to permit swinging of the inner end of the shaft, the bearing being held rigid by side braces branching from the casting or frame 15. The inner or threaded ends of the bolts 27 are also reduced in size where disposed through the crosshead 19 to provide a shoulder 86 limiting the inward displacement of the bolts and preventing the rollers from binding on the upright.
I claim:
1. In a pump, the combination with its cylinder and piston rod; of a supporting head mounted on the cylinder, a horizontal guide frame supported above the head, a rack bar detachably connected to the piston rod and vertically movable in the frame, a
transversely shiftable drive shaft carried by the frame in mesh with the rack bar and means for rotating the shaft to reciprocate the rack bar and piston rod connected thereto.
2. The combination with a pump having a reciprocable piston and the pump rod; of a supporting head mounted on the pump, set screws operating through said head to secure the same to the pump, a casting formed integral with the head and comprising a rear upright, a horizontal frame at the upper end of the upright and braced to the sides of the head, said frame having a horizontally slotted forward portion, a rack bar comprising a plurality of spaced rollers, a cross head attached to the pump rod and supporting said rollers, said cross head being vertically slidable in the frame, a shaft having a pinion at its inner end in mesh with the rack bar, an arm braced to the head and rotatably supporting the shaft, a sliding bearing engaged in the slotted portion of the frame and rotatably receiving the shaft for transverse movement and means for rotating the shaft.
In testimony whereof, I 'aflix my signa' ture, in presence of two witnesses.
