' GAR-COUPLING DEVICE.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented Got. 28, 1913.
Application filed February 29, 1908. Serial No. 418,598.
To all whom it may concern Be it known that I, SAMUEL P. BUSH, of Columbus, in the county of Franklin and State of Ohio, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Car-Coupling Devices; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.
This invention relates to improvements in car coupling devices-the object of the invention being to facilitate the ready adaptation of the draw-heads to curves; to permit the easy and effectual coupling of cars on curves, and to prevent the excessive lateral stresses on the ends of cars when two drawheads are brought together.
WVith these objects in view the invention consists in certain novel features of construction and combinations of parts as hereinafter set forth and pointed out in the claim.
In the accompanying drawings, Figure 1 is a plan View showing my improvements and illustrating two draw-heads in longitudinal alinement and coupled together, and Fig. 2 is a view showing two draw-heads out of longitudinal alinement with each other and the knuckles of both heads open.
It is well known that with the present rigid couplings of the M. C. B. type, as dis closed in patent to Eli H. Janney April 29th, 1875, No. 138,405, and also in the proceedings of the Master Car Builders Association, vol. 25, page 247, the contour lines asshown in the drawings provide for some flexibility by allowing play between the contour of the knuckle of one draw-head and the contour of another draw-head as illustrated at m Fig. 1. This permits coupling on a curve of about seventeen degrees as a maximum.
An important feature of my invention is to make it possible to have couplings in engagement to'curve or couplings'out of engagement to come together and couple on a curve of at least twenty-five degrees. To accomplish these results, the features of construction which will now be described in detail, are provided.
Fragmentary portions of draw-bars are illustrated at 2 in the several figures of the drawings, and to these draw-bars shanks 3 of draw or coupling-heads 1 are pivo-tally connected as shown at 4. The pivotal connection between the coupling-head and the draw-bar or other form of draft device which may be employed, is therefore located just in rear of said draw or coupling-head.
As before intimated, the coupling-head is of the M. O. B. type and at one side thereof it is provided with a vertical rib 5, a comparatively short distance in rear of the pivotal connection of the knuckle 6 with said coupling-head. The vertical rib 5 is there fore located at the knuckle side of the coupling-head and is in position to be engaged by the guard arm 7 of another coupling-head when the cars to which two coupling-heads are attached are at an angle to each 0ther,as when they are upon acurved track. In Fig. 2, one coupling-head is shown disposed at an angle to the other and separated, so that when the two heads come together the guard-arm of one head will engage the rib or hen the two couplings shall have been brought fully together and the knuckles made to interlock, said heads will have been swung on their pivotal connections with the draft devices secured to the cars and will be come disposed in alinement relatively to each other. The couplings when thus connected together are pivotally connected with the draft devices of themselves readily to curves in the road.
It is apparent that with my improvements, embodying the pivotal connections of the coupling-heads with the draft devices and the ribs or flanges 5, the coupling of cars on a curve will be facilitated.
Having fully described my invention what I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters-Patent, is,-
The combination of two coupling heads, each of which is pivoted to its draw head so as to permit a wide range of horizontal movement, each coupling head consisting of a rigid guard arm, a knuckle jaw and provided with a pivot-ed knuckle, all of said parts having the M. C. B. contour lines, each coupling head also lateral projection on its knuckle jaw side and at such distance from the forward end of the knuckle jaw as will cause the forward end of the guard arm of the opposing coupling head to engage therewith, when flange 5 on the other head. 1
so I
being provided with a and only when the coupling heads are disspecification in the presence of two subposed at a sharp angle to one another and scribing Witnesses. which results in the rotation of one of the coupling heads into position to insure the SAMUEL U 5 automatic coupling of the tWo coupling Witnesses:
heads, substantially as set forth. GEO. G. MERRING, In testimony whereof, I have signed this W. J. BENNETT.
