FRANK KNUPFER, OF DETROIT, MICHIGAN.
COLLAPSIBLE-TUBE-FINISHING MACHINE.
Specification ofiLetters Patent. Patented 061'. 28, 1 913..
Application filed December 23, 1912.
T 0 all whom it may concern:
Be it known that l, FRANK KNUPFER, a citizen of the United States of America, residing at Detroit, in the county of Wayne and State of Michigan, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Collapsible-Tulie-Finishing Machines, of which the following is a specification, reference being had therein to the accompanying drawings.
This invention relates to a scrcw threading machine adapted to finishthe nipples of collapsible tubes, such as are commonly used for pigments and paste of various sorts and includes means whereby the tube is suitably supported throughout the operation, is rapidly and efliciently operated upon and is finished without the necessity of remounting. Y
The invention consists in the matters hereinafter set forth and pointed out in the appended claims.
In the drawings :F igure 1 is a view in side elevation partially broken away of mechanism that embodies features of the invention; Fig. 2 is a view of the driving end of the machine; Fig. 3 is a view in elevation of the other end of the machine; Fig. 1 is a plan View in detail and enlarged of the machine, parts being broken away; Fig. 5 is a view in section on line VV of Fig. 1; Fig. 6 is a view in section on line Vl-Vl of Fig. 1 with parts omitted; Fig. 7 is a view in detail of a tube blank to be operated upon; and Fig. 8 is a sectional view showing the finished nipple of the tube.
A main frame 1 of suitable material and design to combine strength with lightness provides a bearing for a head 2 rotatable of rotation of the head.
on a horizontal axis in which shafts 3 are independently rotatable, the shafts being disposed in a circle concentric'with the axis Spindles 4:, with appropriate tapered socket connections with the inner end portions of the shafts 3, project from the head a sullicient distance to be brought successively into operative relation to trimming and threading means- The spindles -1 have screwthreaded nipples 5 so that when tube blanks, as indicated at T,
are thrust thereon the rotation of the nipple causes the latter to work its way into a suitable recess or opening in the blank nipple 6 so that the latter is thereafter driven by the spindle. A carriage 8 is longitudinally reci n'ocated on a suitable guide portion of Serial No. 738,172.
the frame 1 in substantially axial alinement with the head 2 by means of a friction roller 9 that travels in a cam groove of a suitable cam. 10. The latter is driven by means of a shaft 12 journalcd in the main frame. A tool post 13 on the carriage carries a suitable boring and finishing tool 14 so as to be in axial alinement with each spindle as the latter are brought successively in register therewith. Suitable provision is made for accurate adjustment of the carriage in the tool post.
Means for threading the nipples of the blanks consists of a pair of die wheels 15 each journaled in the end of a rock arm 16 and driven in similar directions by means of a gear train indicated at 17. The wheels are normally held apart by a suitably disposed spring 18 so that the nipple ends of the blanks may pass freely between them. Whenever a spindle is in register with or in proper operative relation to and between the wheels 15 and is momentarily arrested by suitable mechanism as herein described, the forward movement of the carriage 8 forces a spreading finger 19 between the end portions of the rock arms 16 and thereby brings the die wheels 15 into rolling contact with a blank nipple. Proper adjustment of the arms as to their relative movement is obtained by suitable screwthreaded stops 20 with check nuts 21, the driving mechanism and pivotal support of the arms being carried by a bracket 22 that is longitudinally movable on the frame for obtaining adjustment in either direction.
A cutting oifdisk 23 on the end of a lever arm 2 is yieldingly pressed by a spring :25 or other like means against the body of the blank on the spindle to trim the same. the arm 2-1 being pivoted on a bracket 26 that is adjustable longitiulinally of the fran'ie on a suitable guideway 27. A presser roll 28 encounters the blank above the disk and holds it firmly in position, being yieldingly forced toward the spindle by the action of the sprin 29 on a bell crank 30 on which the presser roll 98 is jourualed. the bell crank being fulcrumed on the cutter disk arm 24. r
A main shaft 31 is journaled in the main frame and is operatively ccimecled as by a belt 32 with a counter shaft 33. A reduc tion gear train 34 drives the cam shaft 12. A mangled gear 35 on the shaft 12 intermittently turns the head 2 by means of a too mangled pinion 36 with which it meshes, the point of inaction between the mangled gear and pinion being coincident with the registration of one spindle with the cutting off and trimming tool and the adjacent-spindle with the screwthreaded and trimming means. Positive stoppage of the head 2 at the desired point is obtained by means of a detent lever 37 whose outer end drops into suitably disposed notches 88 in an end plate of the'head, the other end of the detent carrying a friction roll 39 that travels on and is oscillated by a cam 40 on the shaft 12.
The spindles l and their corresponding shafts are conveniently driven by means of a belt 42 passing around a pulley 43 on the main shaft 31 and around counter pulleys L3 on the ends of the respective spindle shafts. During the time that the rotation of the head has carried one of the spindle counter pulleys out of contact with the driving belt 42, the counter pulley thereon is frictionally rotated by a roll 44 in the opposite direct-ion' to the rotation of. the spindles driven by the belt 42, the roll 44; being keyed to a shaft 45' that is connected by a gear train 46 or the like to a shaft 4:7. The lat: ter is rotated by the belt 42 through contact with an idler and tightener 48, a companion 49 to the latter holding the belt 42 in proper relation to the spindle counter'pulleys. As a result of this operation the head of the machine intermittently rotates in one direction bringing the spindles successively into registration with the trimming and screw threading tools and at one point in the revolution of. each spindle reversing the direction of the rotation of the latter.
In use, a blank as for example the one indicated at 50 in Fig. 4, is thrust on to the spindle at this position and the screw nipple of the spindle causes the tube blank to rotate. This blank is then successively brought to the positions indicated by the blank 51 andthe blank 52 in Fig. at. \Vhen the blank leaves the last position, the spindle with which it is in screwthreaded engagement moves into a position where it is rotated momentarily in a reverse direction so that when the operator places his hand upon the blank and arrests it, the screwthreaded nipple of the spindle runs the blank oif. The operator then withdraws it entirely. free from the machine.
As hercinshown there are four spindles and four positions assumed by them, first, the one in which the blank is forced into engagement with the spindle, second, the position where the trimming and boring tool is applied, third, the position where the screwthreads are spun on to the nipple by the die wheels and the other end of the tube trimmed, and fourth, the position where the reverse rotation of the spindle causes the blank to be unscrewed from the nipple and leaves the blank clear to be drawn off by the operator.
The machine is simple in construction and effective in operation and as the motion is substantially continuous it brings the blanks up to the tools in succession at a speed limited only by the capacity of the person feeding the machine, and finishes the blank before it leaves the machine.
Obviously, changes in the details of construction may be made without departing from the spirit ofmy invention and I do not care to limit myself to any particular form or arrangement of parts.
