.To all whom t may concern Be it known that I, FoLnn W. VVEsToN, a citizen of the United States, and a. resident o the borough ot' Brooklyn of the city of ew York, inthe State ot New York, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Plate-l'lolding Devices, ot' which the following a specification.
The invention is directed to new and useiul improvements in devices for holdingl and positioning printing plates, which devices comprise a base and a plate'engaging menr bei* held in lace thereupon by the operating means for t e member.

The lugs 7 and y8 are preferably the same width as, or at least not wider than the distance `between the adjacent surfaces of the overhanging portion (see Fig. ll) whereby the plate clampingmember can be removed from the b'ase by transverse movement when i'iotlh ld -in place by the pin 9.

it. can serve as means for holding the clamping member on the base and also as means for positioning the plate engaging or clamping member relative to the base. The movement of the screw operating member 5 is effected by means of a hand operating tool such as is illustrated in Fig. 5. In the form shown in Fig. 3 the split pin 9 can be entirely withdrawn from the plate clamping member at the will of theoperator. structure shown in the modified form illustrated in Figs. T and 8 is substantially the same as thatshotvn in Fig. 3 with the eX- ception that the pin 9a has a recessed portion 9b into which a pin 10 enters and due to this construction the split pin is prevented from being withdrawn entirely from the plate clamping member.
In Figs. 5 and 6 there is disclosed what is known in the trade as a sectional register hook comprising a small base 11 having a slotted portion provided with sections 12 of screw threaded teeth on opposite sides.
A plate clamping or engaging member 13 having lugs or ears 14 and 15 is held in place on the base by the screw operating member 1G. In this register hook it will be observed that the entire thrust from the clamping member or hook 12 is transmitted through the pin 17 and screw member 16 to the base and this a'ords a simple and practical construction and avoids close fits between the clamping member and base as for instance are necessitated by a construction like that shown in my patent for Register hooks ilo.
, 930,582, dated August 10, 1909 in which the thrust from the hook is directly absorbed bythe base and Where the screw operates only as a means for moving the plate engaging member along the slot, and for maintaining it in a certain position therein.
ln Figs. 9 to 12`- there is illustrated the tool which is employed for cutting the sections of screw threaded teethupon opposite sides of the slot.' This tool comprises a frame 18 having secured at its central portion' a tap 19, the cutting portion of whose teeth is spirally arranged in such manner that. the teeth at the forward end of the tap will be in engagement with the metal `in the overhanging portion at one side of the slot while teeth in the same row and at the rearward end of the tap are in engagement with the metal of the overhanging portion at the opposite side of the slot. The teeth of the tap are also so arranged that those which are at the end of one row will be in engagement with the metal at one side ot' the slot while the teeth at the rear end of the succeeding row are in engagement with the metal at the same side of the slot. lt will therefore be apparent that the tap always engages and is cutting metal at opposite sides of the slotted portion and in this manner the chatter which would take The engaging plates 25 which serve as means for regulating and adjusting the position of the tap relative to the work. At the opposite ends ot the longitudinally'extending member there are detachably secured by means of screws 26 the' guide member 27 arranged so as to ent-er the slotted portion to be tapped or operated upon and these guide members serve as means for maintaining the work and tool in the proper relative position' to each other during the travel of the frame over the Work. i
In order to carry 'out the proper cutting of the teeth it is apparent that the connections between the tap and the frame must be such that the tap can be firmly held in position against the work and at a definite distance from the outer surface of the base. i
It is obvious that various forms and modifications may be made both in the devices for holding and positioning a printing plate and also in the apparatus and manner o making the screw threaded portions therein without departing from the spirit and scope of my invention.
I claim as my invention:
1. ln devices of the class described the combination of a base having a longitudinally extending slotted portion provided with overhanging portions adapted to be engaged by an operating and holding means inthe slotted portion, operating and hold'- having ear portions entering the slot whosewidth is not greater than the transverse dimension between the adjacent surfaces of the overhanging portions whereby when disengaged from the holding means the clamping member can be removed from the base by a transverse movement relative thereto, the holding means comprising a member that simultaneously engages under sides of the overhanging portions at opposite sides of the slotted portion.
2. In a device of the class described the combination of a base having a longitudinally extending slotted portion provided with overhanging portions having parts of screw threaded teeth thereupon, a screw threaded operating member adapted to mesh with the toothed portion, the slotted portion being so shaped and of sufficient area in cross section as to permit transverse movement of the member to cause disengagement of the teeth and member and as to permit -ing means and a plate clamping member Y tid noi/cees free longitudinal movement ozt the member pest the teeth when the teeth and screw threads are disengaged, and, :i plate chimpe ing Ineens provided with eers of such Width that it een be inserted in vplace on the bese by i transverse movement7 the screw memn ber when held in operative position relative to the hook being in engagement with the teeth of the overhanging portions et opposite sides of the slot.
