RELIEF-VALVE.
To all whom it may concern Be it known that I, RALPH OLIVER MURPHY, a citizen of the United States of America, residing at Millvale, in the county of Allegheny and State of Pennsylvania, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Relief-Valves, of which the following is a specification, reference being had therein to the accompanying drawing.
This invention relates to a relief valve, especially designed for barrels, tanks and other receptacles containing volatile liquid or fluid, as gasolene.
It is a well known fact that gases and vapors generate in barrels, tanks and other receptacles containing gasolene or other volatileliquid. The generation of gas is due to numerous causes, principally that of the gasolene being agitated during transportation. It is the present practice, when opening a barrel or tank of gasolene, to allow the gas to escape Without attempting to collect and save the same.
The primary object of this invention is to provide a valve that can be easily and quickly connected to a barrel or other receptacle containing a liquid and gas, whereby the gas can be removed from the barrel and saved prior to removing the liquid contents of the barrel.
Another object of this invention is to provide a novel valve that can be easily and quickly connected to a barrel or other receptacle for releasing natural or unnatural atmosphere or gas pressure within the barrel or receptacle, whereby the contents thereof can be easily removed from either end of the receptacle.
A further object of this invention is to furnish a metallic receptacle with a novel closure to which can be connected a valve body. The closure has a plug that is removable through the medium of the stem used in connection with the valve body, said plug serving as a valve proper for controlling the exhaust of gases from the receptacle.
A still further object of this invention is to provide a relief valve consisting of comparatively few parts that are strong and durable, easy to assemble, inexpensive to manufacture, and highly efficient for the purposes for which they are intended.
With the above and other objects in view, the invention resides in a novel construction, combination and arrangement of parts Specification of Letters Patent.

Reference will now be had to the drawing, wherein Figure 1 is a front elevation of a relief valve in accordance with my invention. Fig. 2 is a vertical sectional view of the same as connected to the top of a receptacle. Fig. 3 is a front elevation of a detached plug. Fig. 4 is a side elevation of the same. Fig. 5 is a plan of the plug. Fig. 6 is afront elevation of a valve stem. Fig. 7 is a side elevation of the same. Fig. 8 is a bottom plan of the stem. Fig. 9 is a side elevation of a modified form of valve stem. Fig. 10 is a vertical sectional view of a modified form of plug.
Further describing my invention in detail with reference to the drawing, wherein like numerals denote corresponding parts throughout: 1 denotes a portion of a rccep tacle, as a metallic barrel adapted to con tain gasolene or other volatile liquid. The barrel 1 has an opening surrounded by an inwardly projecting collar 2 and this collar is interiorlyscrew threaded, as at 3.
4. denotes a closure or a cap that is exteriorly screw threaded whereby it can be screwed into the collar 2. The cap has an annular flange 5 and interposed between said flange and the barrel 1 is an annular gasket 6 made of brass, rubber, leather or other yieldable material adapted to form a non leakable and air tight connection between the cap and the barrel 1. The cap l has an annular recess 7 and the walls thereof are screw threaded, as at l. The cap 7 has a central opening 9 and the walls of said opening are screw threaded to receive an inverted cup shaped plug 10, said plug being can teriorly screw threaded whereby it can be screwed into the opening 9.
11 denotes the reduced exteriorly screw threaded end of a cylindrical valve body 12, said body having a nut 14 adjacent to the threaded reduced end thereof. The nut 14: permits of a wrench or other suitable instru ment being employed for screwing the valve body into engagement with the cap 4, and. it is preferable to use a gasket 13 between the cap 4 and the nut 14:. The valve body 12 has the upper end thereof reduced, as at 15 and provided with a stuffing box 16. Extending through the stufiing box 16 is a valve stem 17, said stem having the outer end thereof formed with a shank 18 to receive :a hand wheel, lever, wrench or other instrument employed for rotating or moving the valve stem 17. The inner end of the valve stem 17 terminates in a cross head 19, the object of which will presently appear.
20 denotes a connection at one side of the valve body for an outlet pipe 21 and this pipe can extend to a reservoir, tank or other receptacle employed for collecting gas.
22 denotes reversely arranged parallel hooks carried by the top of the plug 10 and these hooks are engaged bythe cross head 19 of the stem 17 when it is desired to unscrew the plug 10 and elevate the same within the valve oody 12. The cross head 19 and the hooks 22 constitute means whereliiy the valve stem can be placed in engagement with the plug and said plug rotated and elevated from the cap l. Another simple connecting means for the stem and the plug is shown in higs. 9 and 10, wherein the lower end of the stem is screw threaded, as at 23 and tie plug 10 provided with an interiorly screw threaded socket 2d. The threads of the socket 2a are the reverse of the threads of the stem' 17, whereby after said stem has been screwed into the socket, 3

A relief valve comprising an inverted peripherally threaded cap adapted to detachably engage in the wall of a receptacle and provided with a laterally extending annular flange adapted to be seated upon the outer face of the receptacle, said cap formed with interior threads and having its bottom provided w'th a centrally disposed circular opening formed with a threaded wall, a
valve body having one end reduced and exteriorly threaded, said end abutting against the bottom of and detac'hably connected to the interior threads of said cap, an outlet pipe communicating with and detachably secured to the side of said valve body, an
inverted,- hol'low peripherally threaded cylindrical plug closed at its outer end and engaging with the threads of said wall, said plug normally projecting above and below a the bottom of the cap, a stem projecting into said valve body, and said stem and the outer end of the plug provided with associated means for detachably connecting the stem to the plug whereby the latter can be rotated to remove or replace it in said opening.
