DEMOUNTABLE RIM.
' speciatin of Letters Patent.
Patented ont. `21, 191e'.
Application med catter r, 1912, serial No. 724,315.
dent of Richmond, in the county-of Henrico and State of Virginia, have made certain new and useful Improvements in DemountableRims, of which the following is a specification. B/Iyinventlon-relates to nnprovements in demountable runs, and 1t consists in the I combinations, constructions and arrangements herein described and claimed.
An object of my invention is to provide a device which is of simple construction, but vwhich will positively hold the deinountable rim in place when the latter is secured to the fixed rim.-
A further object of my invention is to provide a 'demountable rim which is split. at one portion thereof, with means adjacent to the Split portion for drawing the latter tightly together and firmly holding it in place;
Other objects and advantages w'ill appear in the following specification, and the novel features of the device will be particularly 'pointed out in the appended claim.
My invention is illustrated in the accompanying drawings forming part of this application in which- Figure 1 isV a face View of a wheel, showing the rims assembled, Fig. 2 is a circular section through a portion of the fixed and `demountable rims.I Fig. 3 is a transverse section'along the line 3 3 of Fig. l, Fig. 4 is a plan view of a portion of the fixed rim, and Fig. 5 is a plan View of a portion of the demountable rim.
- In carrying out my invention I make use of a vwheel of the ordinary type having a hub 1, spokes 2, and a felly 3. On the exterior portion of the felly is mounted a fixed rim 4, which is preferably made of metal, land which is provided with an outwardly turned flange 45. The rim 4 is provided with a -pair of lugs or wedges 5, which are inclined toward each other, these lugs being nearer together at the flange 4x, as shmvn in Fig. 4. The inner edges ofthe lugs 5 are beveled from their outer surfaces inwardly toward the surface of .the rim 4, as shown in Fig. 2.
The demountable rim 6 is provided with the curved flanges 6". It is split diagonally, as shown at Gb, so as to provide overlapping portions. 'On each side of the split are lugs or wedges 7 whose outer edges 7X'are bevcled to engage the beveled edges of the lugs 5, as shown in Fig. 2. .l
In order to hold the dem'ountable rim to the fixed rim I provide-wedges like those shown. at 8 in Fig. 3. VThese wedgesare disposed between the flange y4X of the fixed rim and the vflange- 6X of the demountable rim. Bolts 9 pass through recesses 9x in the felly', and are provided with heads 10 of the shape shown in the drawings. `These heads engage the fixed rim on one side of the bolt and the. felly on the' other side, thus securely holding the wedges in position.
From the foregoing description ofthe various parts of the, device the operation thereof may be readily understood. The rim is split diagonally, as shown at Gl so that the rim can be made smaller to facilitate the putting onof the tire..
In assembling the device the tire l1 is first placed on the demountable rim and blown up. This will tend to bring the two portions of the split, demountable rim together. In order that these portions may be kept in alinement I providea stop member 12, which is riveted to the under side of one of the ends of the split rim, and which is arranged toproject underneath the other end, so that when the tire is blown up and the parts are drawn together. the edges of the split rim will be in exact registration. The demount-able rim is now slipped on to the fixed rim from that side opposite the flange 4. and the wedges 5 are thus brought into registration with the wedges 7 in the manner shown in Fig. 2. A wedge 8 is now inserted between the two wedges 7 on the demountablc rim and the nut 9y on the bolt 9 is tightened so as to secure the wedge in place. The wedges 8 around tho wheel are secured in place, and the device is ready for use.
It will be observed that the provision of the wedge 8 prevents any movement of the ends of the detachable rim toward one another, therefore there is no danger of the the device is easily manipulated and positively holds the -tWou rims together.
I claim:
The combination with a felly, of a-fixed' rim secured thereto and provided with a pair .of converging lugs, and asp'ltfde? mountable rim having a pair lof converging lugs disposed on the opposed ends of said split rim and arranged 4to engagethe lugs 10 on said fixed rinnthe adjacent facesf the' lugs ofv said xed rim' being beveled from to engage' and beheld lby the beveled por- 15 tions ofthe lugs-f the fixed rim. v
