Description

- To aZZ 207mm ii may concern M I 'WILLIAM racism,
Be it known that l, e citizen of the United Stntcs, residing at Gelesburg, in the county of Knox and State of lllinois, have invented new and useful.
Improvements in Toasters, of which the following is a. specification All object of the invention. is to provide a toaster for toasting food, such as bread and the like. i
The. invention embodies, among other features, on upper irome end slower frame mounted "to swing on the upper frame, supporting members mounted on the lower frime for retaining the some in place relatively to the flame oi the store when the device is mounted upon it stove, s handle ezo tended from the upper frame and means for retaining the lower frame in locked engagement with the upper frame.
In the furthe' disclosure oi the invention, reference is to he had to the accompanying drawings, constituting apart of this specification, in which similar characters of reference denote corresponding parts in all the views, and in which Fignre 1 is a perspective view, showing; the device in closed position. Fig. 2 is a side elevation, showing the device in open position. Fig. '3 is on end View. Fig. 4 is vertical sectional View taken on the linen -41 in Fig. 1, looking in the direction or" the arrow. Fig. 5 is e.- frzigmenta'ry enlarged perspective view, showing the manner oi forming one of the hinges connecting the upper and lover frames;
Referring more particularly to the views,
mode of an upper frame 10 and a frame 11 mounted to swing onthe frame 10, the mentioned upper and use is lower upper lower frames being preferably formed of Wire and provided with n series of relatively spaced cross bars 12.
A handle 13 is formed by twisting a portion 01" an integral piece of wire, a Wooden grip is being provided to inclose a port of the twisted portion, the ends of the said piece of wire being then extended forwardly and rigidly connected to the upper frame 10 at the rear end thereof and extended across the frame to form additional cross bars 15, the said ends losing then bent around the front end of. the upper frame ldend extending doi qnwzirdly to encircle the front end of the lower frame 11, thus forming hinges 16 ppon which the lower frame 13.. is mounted fig'iceiilozllon er Letters Eetent.
to swing. The upper frame 10 consists pri-- marily of onv integral piece of Wire 1'2, bent in it rectangular shape, the said of material the corners of frsn'io being twisted, and extended upwardly to form supporting members 18, the cross here 12 and cross bars 15 being secured to the Wire 1? as mentioned heretofore, with the handle 13 extended reerwnrdly from the wire 17 after the same has been bent to iform the up per frame 10. I
The lower frame 1.1 made similar to the upper frame 10 and consists of an. int piece of Wire 19 bent in o, rcclnngulsr shape with the said Wire the corners of the frame twisted and extended downwardly to form supporting members 20, the cross ours 120i the lower frame being arranged to have the ends thereof engage the Wire if} {is will be readily understood, with the en:- tremities of the cross when bent around the Wire 1? and then extended down Werdly to engage the Wire 19 and form y iii.
hinges 16, as mentioned heretofore, adopted to retain the front ends of the upper and lower frames 10 and 11. in spaced relation. A. plurality of the cross hers l2 the lower frame 11 after being curved around the front side or the lower frame, have the ends thereof extended don'ni'mrdly to form stop members 21 to limit the swinging move ment of the lower frame ll. when the some moves into open position as shown in lli 2.
An integral piece of wire 22 has the ends thereof bent-to loosely encircle the rear side of the l per frame Mend the said piece of Wire is t en extended downwardly and bent around the rear side of the lower ironic ll form a locking member 23, locking member losing adopted retain the free end of the lower frame 11 in locked engagement with the rear end of the upper frame 10.
In the use of my device, the handle 13 is giasped by the grip Li end the device is turned over so that the supporting members 18 of the upper frame 10 Will repose upon the table, viter Which the locking member 23 is swung into open position and the lower frame 11 can then he swung}; upwardly, the stop members 21 being adopted to engage the front end of the upper fi""l'il(i 10 and limit the upward swinging increment of the lower ironic ll, while at the sometime retaining the lower frame in open position. toes; or other food to he the illilli'lOllQCl toasted or broiled. is now placed upon the inner side of the upper frame, after which the lower frame is swung into closed position and the locking member 23 is then swung to lock the upper and lower frames. The device is then placed over the flame on the stove and will be held in spaced relation thereto by the supporting members 18 of the upper frame, it being understood that the device is 110w in its reversed position. When that side of the food which is nearest to the flame has been properly t0asted, the grip 14L is grasped and the device is reversed so that the supporting members 20 of the lower frame 11 will repose upon the top of the stove and retain the lower frame, also the food, in spaced relation to the flame of the stove and the side of the food nearest the fire, is subjected to the action of the flame to toast the food.- l/Vhen this has been completed, the device is removed from the stove and the locking member 23 is then swung rearwardly to disengage the same from the lower frame 11, thus causing the lower frame to gravitationally swing downwardly and the toasted food will then fall from between the upper and lower frames onto the table.
It will thus be seen that the device is initially used in reversed position and when the food has been properly toasted or broiled on one side, the said device is reversed. and mounted on the stove in its final position before removing the food therefrom, the opposite side of the food being now toasted or broiled, after which by simply releasing the locking member 23 from the lower frame, the lower frame will swing downi-vard, thus causing the food. to become disengaged from the device and fall onto the table, it being well known that an operator ofttimes receives severe burns when removing the toast from the toasting devices now generally used, whereas in my device the final operation is'simply to release the locking member and the food will then gravitationally fall from between the frames, thus obviating the necessity of the operator touching the food after the same has once been placed between the frames.
The ends of the cross bars 12 can be rigidly secured to the upper and lower frames by bending the wires ,of which the frames are constructed to form notches 24 into which the ends of the cross bars are received, the ends being then coiled around the cross bars to secure the same the notches.
I claim As a new article of manufacture, a toaster comprising an upper frame formed of an integral piece of wire, the said piece of wire at the corners of the frame being bent to form supporting members, cross bars carried on the said frame, a lower frame formed of a second piece of wire, the said second piece of wire being bent at the corners to form supporting members, cross bars carried on the lower frame, a handle formed. of a third piece of wire connected to the upper frame, with the forward ends of the said third piece of wire bent to encircle the lower frame formed of the second piece of wire, to permit of swinging the lower frame relatively to the said upper frame, a locking member formed of a single piece of wire and mounted to swing on the upper frame, with the medial portion of the locking member forming an apex and adapted to engage the lower frame adjacent the end of the handle, and stop members formed by projecting a plurality of the cross bars of the lower frame beyond the front end of the lower frame, the said stop memb rs projecting downwardly and adipted to be engaged by the upper frame when the same is swung into open position, to limit the open swinging movement of the upper frame.
In testimony whereof I. ailix my signature in i'n'csciu-e of two witnesses.
\VILLIA M A. l HENRY.
