Description
155.y J. MATEY.
GATE. l APPLICATION FILED 0OT.28, 1912.
Patented oct. 21,v 1913.
WIM/mmf To 'all 'whom t 'may concern:
` FRANK J. MATEY, or GALEsBURe, iILLIivoIs.
Be it known that I, FRANK J. -MATEY, a citizen of the United States, and a resident of Galesburg, inthe county ofrKnoX and State of Illinois, have invented a new and useful Gate, of which the following isa specification.
My invention relates to lswinging gates, and particularly to that type or class there-,
of.l which may be bodily elevated to certain positions within limits, and there heldin order to permit the passage of stock thereunder.
The principal object of the invention is to provide novel means on which the gate body may slide vertically and then, after being elevated to the desired height, will be automatically locked inits elevatedposition'.
Another object is to `provide means for hinging the gate, which means shall coperatewith those just recited.
To `the attainment of these and the accomplishment of other objects, as will pres.- ently appear, the invention consists in the features of novelty in the details of construction, the arrangements and the combi-A parting from the general idea of the inven-M tion, considered in its broadest aspect.
In said drawings: Figure 1 1s an elevation, show1ng all of my improvements as embodied therein; Fig. 2, a similar view,
showing a portion of the gate sustained in Fig. 6, a top plan, broken away; and Fig.
7 a fragmental detail, an elevation.
Considering said drawings by numerals, the same one of which is uniformly employed in referring to the same element, 2 designates a supporting post into which v Specification of Letters Patent.l
GATE.

Application med october 2s, 1912. serial No. 728,203.'
are screwed the stemsk 3 of pintle-receiving eyes 4. y.
5 designates a collar provided in its upper face with a groove 6, Fig. 3. Said collar ts over the stem'7 of `a pin24 having a threaded portion 8, and may be shrunk or welded onto said stem, or, if preferred, integral therewith, asa flange. v
9, 9 designate the eyes of pintlefreceiving hinge'members 10 secured to the upper and lower gate slats 11 by bolts`12or in any other suitable manner.
The .same numeral 12-is employed to designate the-securing bolts for the braces,
slats and standards.
Either or both of the elements 10 may be 14 is a .tubular pintle' whichpasses through the, upper eye 4 vvand through ,both eyes 9, and its base receives the pin stem 7 and rests on the collar 5. is provided with a selective number o f 0ppositely arranged coincident slots 15v in its walls. Hinged at their lower ends by a pin 17 securedin the walls of the'pintle 14 by a pin 17 having a bushing 18 are pairs of gate-supporting dogs 19, the free ends of which lie, ywhen through the slots 15, but when the lower eye 9 is elevated it will forcevsaid endsfback until their upper outer corners lie flush with the outer surface of the pintle, and when said eye has cleared said corners the dogs will fall back into their normalpositions and upon the gate being released the lower eyeV 9 will engage the upper edges of that pair of dogs which is next below it and the gate will be sustained thereby in an evident manner. To lower the gate therefrom it is in normal positions,
necessary only to press the free ends of the onally arranged truss or brace member 22 which is preferably secured to the inner standard, the top board, and to at least two of the other standards. ranged brace member, 23, is secured at one end to the inner standard and lower board cured to one of the standards but preferably not to the other truss member. I thus not only allow the strength of an entire bolt to be utilized for each brace at their convergence, but I avoid the elementr of danger of non-coincident prepunched holes.
A modilication of one of the truss members is shown in Fig. 7, and a modification of the supporting dogs is shown in Fig'. 5.
Having thus described my invention, and having set fort-h its uses, purposes and advantages,y I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters` Patent the following, namely:
1.7 Combined in a gate, a body, means on which it may have both vertical and swing"- ing movements, and pintle-carried hinged dogs adapted to lock the said body in elevated 'osi-tion.
2. ombined in a gate, a body, a pint-le on Vwhich it may rise, fall, and swing, and dogs'y tubular pintle seated loosely in the apertures in said hinge members and the latter adapted to have both vertical and swinging move- ,ments on said pintle, a dog hinged to said lpintle and adapted in one position to be forced into the hollow thereof, and in an- =other position adapted to support the gate vbody when it is in elevated position, and `means. for supporting said pintle.
and itsv diagonally disposed portion is se- I Vertured hinge members secured thereon, a lpintle seated loosely in the apertures in 5. In combination with a gate body, ap-
said hinge members and the latter adapted. to have both vertical swinging movements on sai-d' pint-le, a dog hinged to said pintley and adapted to support the gate body when it isv in elevated position, and means for supportingk said pintle.
6. In combination with a gate-body, ape ertnred hinge-members secured thereon, an apertured hinge-member securable to a post,
a tubular pintle on which the first recited hinge members are adapted to rise, fall,`and swing, means for' supporting its lower end, and dogs hinged to said pintle and adapted in one position to be forced back into the hollow thereof and in ano-ther position to Aswing outwardly to provide a support for the gate body when itis elevated.
7. In combination with a gate body, ap-
,ertured pint'le-receivers secured thereon, an apertured pintle.-receiverV adapted for seycurement to a post, a tubular pintle seated f in the apertures said receivers, a supportingv element secured to the lower portion of the gate, a pin supported thereby and adapted to be received in the aperture in the ,lower end of the pintle, and dogs hinged to said pintle and adapted to support the gate when it is elevated.
In testimony whereof I hereto sign my 'name in presence of two subscribing witlnesses.
