This invention may be applied to any extension table having a supporting member,
which maybe a pedestal and which may be divided as shown, and having two top mem- I bers which are T movable toward and from each other for closing up and extension of thetop. The top members 1, 1, are connected with the pedestal 2, which asillusthat is, adjacent to each other for sliding pedestal members respectively (and hereinafter called the top-slides) slides 5, 5, at-

The controller bar has anupstandinghandle- 14, accessible at the middle part-of the table, that is between the two sets of slides when the top members are spread, by which said controller may be shifted; and mounted on.- the. outer side of the slide 5,there'is a cam '15, which encounters the upstanding handle 14, in the closing inch or' more of closing movement of the top member carried by said inner. slide 5, and in said closing movement crowds the controller bar 7, outwardly to. the. position just described as'no-rmah, When the user desires to'extend the top of the table, the two end top members being drawn-apart will bestopped at onefiller width distance from each other by engagement of [their hooks 8, 8, respectively, with the teeth or abutments 10, and 11, of the controller bar 7 If further extension of the table is desired, the operator must shift the controller bar 7 transversely of the slides to bring the cam slopes 12, and 13, into the paths of the hooks, 8, 8, respectively, whereupon both slides 5, can be moved outwardly another half filler width step and the tops will be spread sufficient to admit two fillers and no more, because the movement of the controller bar 7 for bringing the cam slopes mentioned into the path of the hooks 8, 8, brings into the path of the hooks 9, 9, respectively, the abutment 11, and abutment or edge 16, of the bar 7, which stop the hooks at the limit of the half filler width movement mentioned.
In the table illustrated in the drawings, it is contemplated that not more than three fillers will at any time be inserted without extending the pedestal; and for admitting that number of fillers the operator will shift the bar 7 back to its normal position which brings into the path of the hooks 9, 9, respectively, the cam slopes 12, on the inner side and a third cam slope 17 at the outer side of the group of slides under which the bar 7 extends, thus permitting the dogs 9, 9, to ride up over the bar and thence outward to the limit of the extensibility of the slides, which as stated, is three filler widths, the slides being stopped at that limit by the usual familiar stops provided in the slides themselves. It will be observed that by this construction both top members are at all times stopped against extension at the desired points upon the supporting member, and upon one half that member when it is divided; that is both top members are stopped upon the same support and therefore positively stopped with respect to each other, except at the limit or last step of extension when the stopping occurs in the slides. It will also be observed that the necessity for operating the controller bar 7, in the interval between the extension movements for admitting one filler and two fillers operates to prevent inadvertent extension of one top member two h alf-steps in succession, which would cause the opening to be unequally distributed at opposite sides of the center, and result in overhalancing the table at one end. At the same time it is possible, whenever desired, to extend the table unequally, because the operator can shift the bar 7, between two consecutive movements of the same top member without having in the interval, moved the other top member. The hook-noses of the dogs 8, and 9, are sloped at their outer ends for riding over the bar 7 in closing up the top, which can thus be done without paying any attention to the position of the slide 7 but the cam 15 by encountering the handle 14: will restore the controller 7 to its normal position if it is out of such position.
Inasmuch as the stop device above described for checking the extension of the top members for extending from middle position at step intervals of half filler width are accessible to the operator only when the top members are opened, at least sufiicient to admit the hand, they can not be utilized directly for locking the top members at closed position and for that purpose it is necessary when said stop devices are used, to provide means for locking the top members together; suitable top locking devices are shown in the drawings comprising a hook 20 formed on a slide 21 mounted in a hanger bracket 22 secured upon the underside of one of the top members and connected by a link 23 with an operating and locking lever 24, fulcrumed on the underside of the same top member, near the outer end, and adapted to be swung outwardly and upwardly to locked position, thereby drawing the slide 21, outwardly against the resistance of the spring 22 which is coiled about the reduced stem of the slide 21, between the shoulder 21, caused by such reduction, and the outer bearing of the slide in the hanger 22. On the underside of the other top memher, there is pivoted a cooperating hook device 34, for engaging the hook 20, said cooperating device being preferably in the form of a loop having a tail extension 25, which is stopped on the bracket 26, on which the said device 34 is pivoted, so that the said loop can fall by gravity for engagement with the hook 20, but is checked by its tail, so that at its lowest position it is in the path of the sloping upper edge 27, of a switch or guard plate 28, which is pivoted to the slide 21, and extends alongside of the hook 20, having its upper edge located above the point of said hook, where it extends past the same, when the slide is thrust inward by the spring 22, said switch or guard plate being lifted to this posit-ion by the hook, by the encounter of a tail 29, with which said guard is provided, extending upwardly near the fulcrum of said guard on the slide, and just back of the inner slide bearing of the slide, in the bracket, so that said tail encounters said bearing when the slide is thrust inward by the spring. When the top members are approaching each other the loop 3 1, rides up on the said sloping edge of the slide 27, of the switch or guard 28, until the cross bar of the loop passes by the upwardly projecting nose of the hook 20, this position being reached before the top members are closed together. The operator then drawing the lever outward to locking position, retracting the slide, first causes the guard to be dropped, letting down the loop into engagement with the hook, and wit-h the further outward swinging movement of the lever draws the two top members snugly a supporting member and end top members movable relatively to the supporting member toward and from each other for closing up and extension to admit fillers, in combination with such supporting member and end top members, a set of slides connecting the top members and the supporting member, comprising intermediate slides which are fast on the supporting member; and exterior or extreme slides which are fast on the end top members respectively; a bar extending across the set of slides and stopped against movement longitudinally of the supporting member; a plurality of means on each of the extreme slides of the set for engaging said bar positioned along the length of the slides at half filler width intervals and offset laterally from each other so as to travel in different paths when the slide is moved,the bar having abutments for encountering said engaging means alternating in a direction transverse of the sides with crossing paths for said engaging means, and means for moving the bar transversely of the slides to shift the registration of said abutments, and crossing paths with the paths of said engaging means respectively. I

In an extension table which comprises a supporting member and end top members movable relatively to the supporting member for closing up and extension to admit fillers, in combination with such supporting member and end top members; a set of slides for extensibly connecting the top members and supporting member, comprising intermediate slides fast on the supporting member, and outer or extreme slides fast on the top members respectively, a bar mounted on the supporting member below the slides which are fast thereon for sliding transversely of the extension slides, dogs on the extreme slides positioned along the length Copies of this patent may be obtained for thereof at half filler width intervals, consecutive dogs on each slide being offset laterally from each others paths, the bars having at opposite sides of the set of slides in position for cooperating with the dogs abutments for engagement of the dogs and cam slopes affording crossing paths for the dogs, and means for shifting the bar transversely to reverse the registration of said abutments, and cam slopes with the paths of the dogs respectively.
3. In an extension table which comprises a supporting member and end top members movable relatively to the supporting member for closing up an extension to admit fillers, in combination with such supporting member and end top members, a set of slides for extensibly connecting the top members and supporting member, comprising intermediate slides fast on the supporting member, and outer or extreme slides fast on the top members respectively; a bar mounted on the supporting member below the slides which are fast thereon for sliding transversely of the extension slides, dogs on the extreme slides positioned along the length thereof at half filler width intervals; consecutive dogs on each slide being offset laterally from each others paths, the bar having at opposite sides of the set of slides in position for cooperating with the dogs abutments for engagement of the dogs, and cam slopes afi'ording crossing paths for the dogs, the bar at one end having an upstanding arm, and a cam at the side of the adjacent slide positioned for encountering said arm at the limit of the closing movement, and adapted by such encounter to force the bar to one limit of its path of reciprocation.
