OIL-BURNER.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented oer. 14, rats.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it. known that I, LORENZO S. THOMAS, a citizen of the United States, residing at Carthage, in the county of Jasper and State of Missouri, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Oil-Burners; and I do declare the following to be a full, clear,
and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.
This invention relates to improvements in oil burners.
One object of the invention is to provide an oil burner adapted to be used in connection with wood or coal burning, heating or cooking stoves and which is arranged in such a manner as to permit the use of wood or coal in the stove without removing or changing the position of the burner.
Another object is to provide an oil burner which is arranged entirely outside of the stove and provided with suitable dampers for causing and cont-rolling a draft through the burner for drawing the flame into the fire box above the grate thereof.
With these and other objects in view, the invention consists of certain novel features of construction, combination and arrangement of parts as'will be more fully described and claimed.
In the accompanying drawings; Figure 1 is a perspective view of a cooking stove showing my improved burner applied thereto; Fig. 2 is a central vertical section view of the stove with parts broken away and the invention applied thereto; Fig. 3 is a horizontal section thereof taken on the line 3*3 of Fig. 2; Fig. 1 is a detail perspective view of the gas generator employed in connection with my improved burner.
In the embodiment of the invention I provide a hollow body 1 which may be of any suitable shape having a flat bottom 2 to support the generator of the burner hereinafter described. The body 1 is formed on or secured to an attaching plate 3 which forms the inner side of the body and projects a suitable distance beyond the sides and bottom thereof to form an attaching flange which is bolted or otherwise secured to the side of a stove. The side of the stove to which the burner is secured has formed therein an opening over which the body of the burner is arranged and in the plate 3 immediately above thebottom 2 of the body is formed a flame outlet passage 4: through which and through the opening in the side of the stove the flame from the burner is drawn by the draft passing through the latter. The body of the burner is applied to the stove in such a posit-ion that the passage 4 in the plate 3 of the body of the burner will be disposed immediately above the grate or bottom of the fire box. The top of the body 1 of the burner is preferably formed on an angle as shown and has therein draft passages 5 which are opened and closed to a greater or less extent by a damper 6 which is arranged on top of the body 1 and operatively secured thereto in any suitable manner. In the outer side of the body 1 is formed an opening 7 through which access may be had to the interior of the body for placing or removing the generator of the burner and said opening 7 is closed by a door 8 which is here shown and is preferably hinged at its lower edge and adapted to be swung upwardly and downwardly to an open position. The door 8 is held in closed position by a suit-able catch 9 as shown. In the door are preferably formed ventilating openings 10 which admit air to the body of the burner for promoting the combustion of the fuel therein.
Connected with the body of the burner and preferably entering the same through one side thereof is an oil supply pipe 11 having therein a controlling valve 12. The oil supply pipe is connected to a supply tank 13 which may be arranged or located at any desired point. The inner end of the supply pipe 11 projects a suitable distance into the body of the burner and has its inner end turned down to form a discharge nipple 14 from which the oil is permitted to drop onto the generator 15 which is removably supported on the bottom 2 of the body adj acent to the flame outlet passage 4. The plate 3 forming the inner side of the body 1 of the burner is preferably formed at an angle for a short distance above the opening 4 as shown at 16, said angular portion of the plate forming a deflecting member which guides the flame downwardly through the opening 4 into the fire box of the stove. The generator 15 of the burner comprises a tray 17 which may be of any shape and is provided on its lower side with a series of supporting lugs 18 which space the same a slight distance above the surface on which the generator rests. In the center of the tray 17 is an upwardly projecting oil vaporizing or deflecting member 19 which is substantially conical in shape and on the apex of which the oil from the discharge nipple 14 of the supply pipe is adapted to drop.
In operating the burner a suflicient quantity of oil is first placed in the tray 17 and ignited thus heatingthe cone or deflecting member 15 so that when the oil drops onto the heated cone the oil will be immediately vaporized or turned into gas which will burn in the body of the burner and the flames from the burning gas thus generated will be drawn by the draft entering the draft passages 5 in the top of the burner through the outlet passage 1' in the inner side of the body 1 and into the fire box of the stove as hereinbefore described. By providing suflicient draft the flames will be drawn back over the oven or through other parts of the stove as will be readily understood. By constructing and arranging my improved burner as herein shown and described, it will be seen. that if it is desired to burn coal or wood in the fire box of the stove it is simply necessary to place a metal plate along the inner side of the fire box over the passage 4; in the burner after which any kind of fuel may be used in the stove without removing any of the parts of the oil burner. It will also be noted that the generator 15 is simply placed in position on the bottom 2 of the burner bottom and may be readily removed through the opening in the outer side of the body of the burner to permit the generator to be cleaned or for any other purpose. In arranging the burner on the stove the same is placed in such position that the flame will be drawn therefrom above the grate bars as herein shown and described, thus obviating the danger of the intense heat of the flame from burning out the grate bars as would occur should the flames enter below the grate and pass between said bars.
From the foregoing description, taken in connection with the accompanying drawings, the construction and operation of the invention will be readily understood without requiring a more extended explanation.
Various changes in the form, proportion and the minor details of construction may be resorted to without departingfrom the principle or sacrificing any of the advantages of the invention as claimed.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim is:
The combination with a cook stove having a draft opening at one side immediately above its grate of an oil burner comprising a hollow casing adapted to be secured to the exterior of the stove, said casing having in its outer side an opening and a door to close said opening and in its upper side draftopenings, a damper to regulate said draft openings, an attaching plate forming the inner side of said body and having atits lower end a flame opening registering with the opening in the side of the stove to which the burner is applied, an inwardly projecting flame deflecting member formed on said inner side plate at the upper end of the opening therein and adapted to extend obliquely and downwardly through said opening into the stove, an oil supply pipe connected with said burner casing and having on its inner end an oil discharging nipple, and a generator removably supported on the bottom of the burner body in position to receive the oil dropped from the inner end of said supply pipe, whereby the oil is vaporized and burns in said body of the burner from which the flame is drawn through the flame passage therein and passes through the fire box of the stove.
In testimony whereof I have hereunto set my hand in presence of two subscribing witnesses.
LORENZO S. THOMAS.
