To all whom it may concern.'
Be it known that I, VICTOR LAUER, a citizen of the United States, and a resident of Stillwater, in the county of Payne and State of Oklahoma, have made certain new and useful Improvements in Cultivators, of which the following is a speciiication.
My invention is an improvement in cultivators, and has for its object to provide a wheeled device of the character specified, wherein the wheels are so connected to the cultivator, that the driver may simultaneonsly swing the wheels with respect to the cultivator to change the direction of movement of the cultivator, and may hold the said wheels at any desired angle with respect to the cultivator.
In the drawing: Figure 1 is a rear view of the improved cultivator, Fig. 2 is Ia section on the line 2-2 of Fig. 1, and, Fig. -3 isa perspective view of a stirrup and its connections.
The present embodiment of the invention comprises a tubular body frame 1, having connected therewith a tongue 2 and a seat 3, the tongue extending forwardly from the frame, and the seat being arranged at the rear thereof and above the level of the body frame. Brackets i are provided for connecting the seat with the body frame, the said seat having a central depending rib 5 received between the rear ends of the brackets, the said brackets converging toward their rear ends as shown, and rivets 6 are passed through the brackets and the rib to secure the seat in place. Each bracket is provided with a bearing 7 for engaging the body frame, and in iront of the body frame the brackets converge to the tongue 2, and are lapped upon the opposite sides thereof, and secured thereto by means of a bolt and nut 8. Wheels 9 are provided` for supportting the frame, each wheel being journaled upon a spindle 10, and each spindle is received at itsinner end in a bearing sleeve 11.o Each of the sleeves 11 is provided with an upward tubular extension 12, intermediate its ends, and the interior of each extension is separated from the bore ofthe sleeve by a diaphragm 13. lThe spindles are secured in the bearing sleeves by means of set screws 14, the said set screws being passed through the sleeve and engaging the spindle, to prevent angular movement thereof with resect to the sleeve.

A similar collar-'19 is arranged on each arm 16 at the top of the extension 12, each collar 19 being held in place by a set screw 20, the said screw being threaded through the collar and engaging the arm, At each end the bearing frame is rovided with a longitudinally extending hoo 21, extending beyond the adjacent collar 17 and having a lateral lug engaging outside the collar. The said hooks prevent disengagement of the arms 15 from the body frame and each of the extensions 12 is provide l with a similar hook 22 engaging outside of .the adjacent Acollar 19, to prevent disengagement of the arm 16 from the extension` A ball 23 is arranged at the lower end of each of the arms v16, between the said end and the diaphragm 13, for supporting the said arm, and for providing a bearing'ifor th.I said arm upon which to rotate. A ach of the extensions 12 is provided with'an'inwardly extending lug 24 near its upper end, and a cross head 25 is connected to the body frame at the lcenter thereof, by means of a' hanger 26. Thehangerpasses through an opening 32 in the center of the cross head, and a nut 27 'is threaded onto the hanger below the cross head, for pivotally connecting the cross head to the hanger. The ends of the cross head are longitudinally slotted, as shown at 28 (Fig. 3) and a stirrnp 29 is connected with each end of the cross head. Each of the said stirrups has a threade stem 30 extending through the adjacent slot, and a nut 31 engages the stem above the' cross head. Each stirrup-is provided with an integral laterally extending link 33, and each link is secureI at its outer end to the VAny suitable or desired orm of cultivating mechanism may be supported by the body fra e, the said mechanism ormingno part of t e resent invention, and for that own nor described.
In operation, the driver seated in the seat 3 engages the stirrups 29 with his feet. The slots 28 of the cross head permit a limited movement between the stirrups and the cro-ss head. It will be obvious that when the cross head is swung at an angle to the shaft, or to the axes upon which the wheels rotate, there must be some movement between the stirrups and the cross head in order to permit such swinging movement. When the ends of the cross head swing angularly as abovementioned, the distance between the said ends and the adjacent stirrups is increased. By means of the stirrups and the cross head, the angle of the planes of the wheels with respect to the direction of motion of the cultivator may be changed. It will be understood that when the hanger 29 at the right of Fig. l, for instance, is pressed forwardly, the extension 12 will be oscillated on the arm 16 of the angle bar, to vary the angle of the plane of the adjacent wheel to the direction of motion of the cultivator. When the stirrup is pushed forward as mentioned, the stirrup at the opposite end of the cross head is moved rearwardly, the cross head swinging on the hanger. Thus the extension 12 at the opposite side of the cultivator is oscillated in the opposite direction to the first-named extension, so that the wheels 'are swung simultaneously in the same direction to guide the cultivator through the field. The wheels may be held in the desired position, until the direction of motion has been changed, after which they are swung into proper alinement with the cultivator. The weight of thecultivating mechanism and of the operator is supported on the balls 23, and the said balls provide a non-friction bearing for the said weights. x/vg Y I claim .Y j 1. A device of the character specified, comprising a tubular body frame, brackets each having a bearing intermediate its ends engaging the body frame, said brackets converging in front and in rear of the body frame, a seat connected to the converging ends in rear of the frame, a tongueiconnected 4with the brackets in front of the frame, an angle bar or rod at each end of the body frame, each of the said bars or rods consisting of two portions extending at a right angle to each other, one of the said portions of each bar or rod being received in the adjacent end of the body frame, a spindle bearing sleeve at each end of the body frame, each sleeve having an upward tubular extension for receiving the other arm of the adjacent angle rodjor bar, a collar secured adjustably to each arm of each-angle bar or rod, hooks on the ends of the body frame and on the upper ends of t-he extension for engaging outside ofthe adjacent collar, each of the said extensions having, a lateral lug near its upper end, a cross head at the center of the body frame, a pivotal connection between the cross head at the center thereof and the body frame, each end of the cross head being longitudinally slotted, a stirrup at each end of the cross head, each stirrup having a threaded stem extending through the adjacent slot and having a laterally extending link secured to the lug of the adjacent extension, a nut engaging the stem above thecross head, a spindle in each bearing sleeve, means for preventing angular movement of the spindle with respect to the sleeve, and a wheel on each spindle.
