Be it known that l, Jason B. RosnNsrnrN a citizen of the United States, and resident of Cleveland, in the county of Cuyahoga and State of Ohio, have invented certain new and useful lmprovements in Cloth- Piling Machines, of which l hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description', such as will enable others skilled in the art to' which it appertains to make and use the same.
The objects of the invention are to provide automatically operating mechanism for folding cloth into required lengths of material so as to prepare it for manufacturing purposes and particularly for folding the cloth into lengths preparatory to the cutting` of patterns for making it up into wearing apparel,` and the invention comprises mechanism adapted to reciprocate upon a table and to' carry the cloth backward and forward thereon through a predetermined distance as it comes from the roll, so as to lay it in folds upon the table, and also includes automatically operating devices for holding the cloth at each limit of movement of the reciprocating device so as to form the folds with regularity and precision of exactly equal length.
The invention further comprises automatically acting devices cloth holdingdevices, to release them from the fold at the proper moment before the return of the reciprocating carrier and thereafter to place them upon as to form another fold.
The invention also includes the various details of construction and combination and arrangen'icnt of parts as hereinafter described, shown in the accompanying draw'- ings and specifically pointed out in the claims.

ln these views, is the table, 2, 2, are guide rails 'elevated above the table on each side and upon these rails are mounted the carriers 3, 3 upon rollers et, l, and the carriers are connected by means of the transverse rod 5 the central portion of which may be provided with a roller 5 over which the cloth 6 is passed before folding. Before it passes over the rod 5 the cloth passes over the rollers 7, T and underneath the pressure roller 8, mounted on the brackets 8, 8, and is thereby placed under tension so that the cloth will be smoothly laid. 9 y is a guide for the roll of cloth. r1 he amount of tension can be varied at will by means of the spring pressed p'in P and screw colv lars O, ,Q inserted in swinging bearings R, i R which permit of removing the upper roll.
Tie carriers 3, 3, are reciprocated upon the rails 2, 2, by means of the cords 10 which are attached to arms 18 and pass over ithe pulleys 10', 102 one set at each end of the machine. The pulleys 10', 102 are secured upon shafts 11 and 11 respectively `which are alternately rotated in opposite directions in any desiredl manner. As shown the shaft 11 is provided with loose pulleys 12A and 13 over one of which is a crossed belt 111 so that thev pulleys revolve in oppo- A site directions. The pulleys 10 102 are enkabled to rotate alternately in opposite directions to give the carrier a reciprocating `movement, by means of a reversing device whereby the shaft 11 is alternately conl-nected with one or the other of the loose pulleys 12 and 13. This reversing device may be constructed as follows: 15 is a shiftling or reversing rod mounted in bearings 16, 16 at one sidec of the machine. The rod iis, provided, with sliding sleeves, 17, 17 adapted to be struck by the arm 18 which ldepends from the carrier. Springs 20, 2O take the shock of the impact and it is received upon fixed collars 21, 21.l The move- `ment of Lthe shifting rod 15 operates a lshifting lever; 22,- link 23 and lrock bell crank 24 which moves a double clutch 25 to `engage the pulleys 12 and 13 alternately.
l The fixed collars 21, 21 can be adjusted upon the shifting rod to reverse the movements of the carriers according to the length of the folds desired.
24J, 24; are fingers adapted to be laid on the cloth on each edge and over which the cloth is folded as the carrier moves forward or backward over the table. Each finger 2st mounted upon a rod 25 having a ball bearing 26 in a swinging arm 27 which is pivoted at 2S upon a support 29 which in turn is longitudinally adjustable upon the table upon guide rails 30 by means of a ilan1ping screw 31 and nut 32 as shown in Fig. 9. The outer portion 33 of the arm to which the finger is attached is pivoted in the other portieri at 8A- to permit vertical movement thereof so that the linger can be raised to remove it from the cloth and again lowered to place it in position to make an other fold. The arm 27 is raised as it swings by means of a cam 35 on the support 29, and the finger is kept in alinement at right angles to the edge of the table by means of slotted front guide bars 3G and inclined rear guide bars 37 between which it operates. The forward portion 38 of the linger is hinged at 39 and is normally held in a horizontal position by means of a spring l0 but the hinge permits of its being 'withdrawn from a fold by bending as it is raised up by the arm 27 and cam The inclination of the rear guide bars is such as to permit the arm 27 to rise upward and also move rearwardly so as to withdraw the linger from the edge of the cloth; while descending however it is desirable that the finger should fall vertically upon the cloth since if it were pushed gradually forward it would be likely to move the cloth with it. The outer ends of the lingers 24C are made adjustable at 60 so that their length can be varied to suit the width of the cloth. To prevent this action a plate 4l is pivoted at 42 in the path of a pin 43 which is attached to the swinging arm and an opening 414 is left in this plate at one end. The outer ends of the fingers 24, 24 are made detachable at 60 so that their length can be varied to suit the width of the cloth. The pin 4:3 when rising will raise this plate and pass beyond it but before falling will traverse the plate until it reaches the opening llland will then fall vertically through it and the finger will follow the same course and fall vertically on the goods.
The swinging arms 27 are operated by means of cams on the carriers so as to operate coincidentally with the movement thereof. rlhey are four in number and those at one end of the machine are operated alternately with those at the other end of the machine, as the carrier reciprocates on its guides.
As shown in Fig. 1 the pair of lingers 24 24 at the left of the figure are inserted in a fold in the cloth and the carrier rod 5 has passed beyond the fold and is at the point of return and the arm 18 on the carrier is engaging the shifting rod. At the right of the figure the pair of lingers 24J, 2l .are shown withdrawn from the cloth. rlhe cams by means of which this action of the i'ingers and swinging arms is obtained are preferably arranged as follows: Each arm is provided with two reversely inclined cams 50 and 51 and the finger carrying eX- tremities of one pair of arms extend toward the extremities of the other pair so that the cams on the carrier will have equal effect on the movements of all the arms. Each carrier is provided with two opposite and reversely inclined camV surfaces 52 and adapted to engage the cams 50, 50 in turn on each pair of arms and with the double cam 54 at a lower level adapted to engage the cams 51, 51 alternately on each pair of arms. These cams on the carrier act lo swing' the arms alternately in opposite i directions and the cams on lthe arm lift so as to pass the cams on the carrier not intended to operate them9 and to engage the ones which are intended to operate them, so that one cam will not interfere with the action of the other.
'ihe action is as follows: As the carrier 3 moves forward the cam 50 on each side will strike and rise above the cam 52 and the cam 54 will strike the cam 51 and throw the arm 27 outward until the linger is released from the cloth. As soon as the carrier 3 begins to return the cam 58 will strike against the cam 50 and throw the arm inward and it will rise on the incline 36 and fall through the opening 4A upon the cloth. rlhe cam 51 will then rise over the cam 54. and no further action will be taken until the return stroke of the carrier. In this manner the cloth is alternately held and released as the carrier reciprocates.
In F ig. 11 is shown a frame for this machne so arranged as to be attachable to any ta le.
Having described the invention what I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent is- 1. ln a cloth piling machine, a table, a cloth carrying device reciprocable thereon, means in said carrier for placing said cloth under tension, a pair'of fingers at each end of the machine, one pair adapted to engage the cloth alternately with the other pair, a combined hinged and swinging arm to which each finger in each pair is secured, guides arranged to hold each linger in a transverse position relatively to the edge of the cloth, one of said guides inclined to permit the finger to be withdrawn laterallytherefrom, a cam adapted to raise each swinging arm and a device adapted to cause each finger to fall vertically by gravity, and
engaging devices upon said carriers and swinging arms, whereby said carriers are caused to operate each pair of said arms alternately, and means for reciprocating said carrier.
In a cloth piling machine, the combination of a table, a reciprocating carrier there over, pivoted arms adjacent to the path thereof, cams on each side of the table and at each end thereof, the said cams arranged on the carrier and arms and adapted to engage and swing the arms in opposite directions as said carrier reciprocates, a stationary cam adapted to raise one end of each arm, a horizontal finger pivotally secured to each arm, guides in which said fingers move, one set of said guides being inclined to permitof laterally swinging said arms, and a swinging plate at the top of each inclined guide, said plate provided with an opening, adapted to permit the finger in said guide to fall vertically by gravity.

In a cloth piling machine, in combination, a table, a pair of horizontally swinging arms at one end of the table, one arm at each side thereof, a similar pair of arms at the other end of the table, a carrier on each side of the table reciprocable on said machine, arm operating cams on said carriers and corresponding cams on said arms,
said cams on said arms arranged on both sides of the pivotal point thereof, a cam for raising one end of each arm, a horizontal finger pivotally secured to the outer end of each arm, and means raised by said finger for temporarily retaining the same in an elevated position until the end of the arm has swung inwardly, the said retaining means permitting the finger to fall verti'- 40 cally.

In a piling device for a cloth folding machine, in combination with a swinging arm, operating cams thereon arranged one at each side of the pivotal point, a hinged outer end to the arm, a horizontal finger having a hinged outer end and supporting spring therefor, means for pivotally securing said linger in the outer end of said arm, a vertical front guide for the finger, an inclined rear guide therefor, and a hinged plate provided with an opening, said plate raised by said arm as it rises, said opening in said plate permitting the said arm to fall by gravity as the arm moves inwardly.
