To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, Bmnrronn FnoMHoLz,
a'subject of thc German Empire, ands resident of Giirtnerstrasse 19, Boxhagen, Germany, have invented a certain new and useful Improvement in or Relating to Talking- Machines; and I do hereby declare the followingto be afull, clear, and exact description'of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawing,
"order that an accurate and satisfactory rcproductionthereof may be produced, the common construction or talking mach nes,
wherein thesound arm is adapted for both lateral and vertical movement is unsatisfactory because the weight of the sound arm upon the needle is usually more than is necessary to cause the needle to follow the sound groove properly and is, in .part at least, the cause of the loud-scratching noise which is so noticeable while the machine is in motion and which is so disagreeable. This trouble may be obviated to a large degree by 'so constructing the sound arm that it is capableof horizontal or'later-a'l.1nove ment only, thereby removing the weight of the arm from the needle, and by. providing the sm end of said arm with an angular section capable'of a vertical motion relative thereto, and to which the sound box may be attached. This construction, however, still leaves a section of the sound arm capableof free vertical movement and the weight of said section is carried by the needle as it travels over the record, producing to an on:
desirable degree, the s atchingnoise referred to. I
37- invention aims, so far as possible, to vve the sound box of all unnecessary ht, thus reducin to a minimum the scratching sound Whic has been referred to as so objectionable and thereby improving materially the quality of the sound.
In the embodiment of my invention illustratedand describai herein Figure l is a side elevation of a talking machine, Fig. 2
a detail of the small end of the sound arm showing how the position of the sound box may be adjusted :for more convenient removal and insertion of the needle therein, Fig. 3, a modified construction of the invention, Fig. 4, a vertical end view of the sound arm on the line 4-4, 5, and Fig.
5 a, plan of the small end of the sound arm and sound box.
,Beferring'to Fig. 1,. the case' A is provided with a suitable horn a, which is supported at its smaller or lower end by a b'racket b,secured in turn to the case A. A
sound arm a is secured to the bracket b, the large end thereof being disposed substan' tially opposite the small end of the horn a, providing a continuation or extension thereof, said arm 0 being capable of horizontal movement only, so that it may be brought into position over the disk table (I of the machine, the weight thereof, however, bein carried. by the. bracket Z). At its small en Fig. 5, the sound arm 0 is given a lateral box may be of usual construetion With respent to the diaphragm and needle, but 1t- 13 preferably adapted to be mounted directly on the sound arm. eecentrically withrelation thereto, as shown in Figsrl, 2 and 5. arrangement improves the quality of the sound materially. Another, advantage arising from thisconstruction is that when so mounted. the weightof the sound box exerts the necessary pressure upon the needle to cause it to follow the groove ofthe" disk accurately without cxcrtingsuflicicnt pressure thereon to cause the disagreeable scratching sound referred to. ably securing the sound box 6 to the sound .arnrl provide, Fig. 4, a flange f having at a suitable point thereon a stop "f and a re-' This - t .irn to receive the sound hox c. The sound For deta'cheess The sound box is providedon the back thereof, Figs. 4 and 5, with a short neck g apted to enter the .end of the'lat oral portion of the sound armand said box is provided with a pin g 'having a head g to engage the flang f of the sound arm; 1 0 sec e said' sound box to said arm end the necs of the sound box 5 is inserted into tie end of the arm with the head *of the I: e ,1 igentrieel-ly mounted V on the 80 (1 arm, ig'. 3, ande suitable weight J or pressure member h secured to the box to I $105! the hex it'mey con- 9gb ebdujt flthe iend g ,x.
