Letters Patent No. 107,570, dotad 'September 20, 1870.
IMPROVMNT m BT'roN-MACHINS.
The Scheule refen'ed .to iu these Letters Patent and making part of the same.
i, CHRIs'roeH Vo'LKEm', of the city, county, and State of New York, have inventcd certain Improvements in Button-Machines, ot' which the following is a specification.
Nature aml Objects of the Inventi'on.
My invention relates to a machine designed for the manufacture of metallic but-tous, which can bo attached to garments without the aid of sewin".
- The bnttons are made from blanks, which are cut from sheet metal, the edge of the blanks'beng first turned over' and swaged Jdown, after which two points or angnlar prongs are cut or punched from the body of the button, being sev'ei'ed therefrom at their points only,` and connected therewith vertically`tolthcplane of the button. 4
The points thus provided are designed to fasteu the button to the cloth, and are first passed through it, and then clinched or pressed outwardlyagainst the same i i Description of tlw Accompany'ng Drftwing.
Fignre 1 is a side elevation of the machine.
lfig'ure2 is a frontview of my invention.
Figure 3 is a planv view of the'same.
Figure 4 is a sectional view of the stamps and dies, the stamps being shown in an elevated position. i
Fignre 5 is also a seetional view of the stamps and dies, the stampsbeing shown at the end of their down strokc.
Figure 6 is a plan view of the (lie l'.
Figure 7 is a section of a blank, after having passed through the first operation. i
Fignres 8, 9, and 10 are, respcctively, a sectional plan and top view of the button when completed.
ft is a frame, wherein is provided bearings for the shaftf, and having located thercin three vertical aperturcs, which guide the plungcrs 1),,0, and m, in their ascent and descent. f g
The plungers b an'd c receive t-heirdownward inotion from a lever, 11,'-an'd a cam, which cam is fastened upon a revolving shaft, j; and aspring, g, canses them to return.
The lower end of the plungcr b is made`into a coniig. 7.
When the pl'unger 7) ascends, the blank, shapcd as aforesaid, is left by the plnnger, anda slide, l,^which is fit-ted between the dies h. and k, transfers the blank to another bottoml die, l', which is situated immediately nnderand on a line with the second plunger c.
This die l' and the end of the plnnger c are so shaped as to turn the rim of the blank over and swage it down flat. 4
ABelow the die l', and on the sam;l center line, there is a third plunger, m; which plays up and down vertically, being gnided lin the frame (t, and receiving its motion ii'om a levcr, -n,` and a cam, 71",.on the shaft f. v
T'he cam n' is so shaped and timed as to elevate the plnnger m after the plunger c has' arrived -at its 'lowest position, where it remains until the lower plunger m has finished its up stroke,wl1en it is caused to descend by the action of the spring g'.
The plnngcr m is provided Awith a pair of pnnches,
y, of a triangular Shape, which pass through correspondiug holes a in die l', andalso through corresponding holes in the bottom end of plunger c.` x
When there is a bntton-blauk between the plnng will cut out of the button a pair ot' points, and leave i them connected with the button iu a Vertical1 position, as shown -in fig. 10, the cdges of said punches next to the center of the button` not beingl made to cut; and when the points are'finishcd, as'aforesaid, the button is then completcth The slide I, which transfers the blank from the first die 7a to the finishing die l', receives its motion .from a lcver, 8, and a side'cam, a', (figs. 2 and 3,)
which cam is also fastened to the Vshat't and so shaped as to enable the slide l to carry the vblank from-one die to vthe other when. the upper plungers ascend, and, by the aid of the spring R, to return to its original position before the said plungers have ar-` g, snbstantially as and for the purpose described.
3. The combination and arrangcment of the shai't f, cam n', .lever 11', plnnger m, audspriug (j', substant-ially as shown and described.
4. The combination and arrangcment of cam tt', level' s, slide l, spring R, shaft f, and die h, substantially as shown, and for the purpose specified.
CHR-ISTOPH VOLKERT.
