OSKAR ERNST WETZER, 0F HERSBRUCK, GERMANY.
RAILWAYSLEEPER.
jl,075,6l6.
To all whom t may concern Be it known that I, Oskar ERNST "WETZER, a subject of the Emperor of Germany, and resident at Hersbruck, Germany, have invented certain new and useful Improvements Relating to Railway-Sleepers.
This invention relates to reinforced concrete sleepers for railways or permanent ways and the characteristic feature of my improved sleeper resides in the fact, that 1t has in the Zone of tension a U-shaped or an l-l-shaped iron between the flanges of which the heads of the fastening bolts for the rails engage and that by reason of the direct connection between the said iron and the rails unintentional loosening of the latter can occur only through the breaking of the bolts.
By the present invention the ordinary objections to concrete sleepers are oveicome and a connection between the sleeper and rail is provided which will not necessitate any alteration in the ordinary small ironwork or other auxiliary parts such as woodblocks and so forth for use in fixing the rails.
'Ihe invention is shown in the accompanying` drawings, in which Figure l is a longitudinal section of a portion of the sleeper. Fig. 2 is a corresponding plan. Fig. 3 is a cross-section of the same. Fig. 4 is a perspective view of the central reinforcing and connecting bar. Figs. 5 to 8 show a modified arrangement, in which: Fig. 5 is a longitudinal section, Fig. 6 is a plan, and Fig. '7 is a cross-section of the sleeper, Fig. 8 is a perspective view of the central reinforcement.
Like reference letters parts in all the figures.
Referring first to the Figs. l to 4, the concrete sleeper a has in its upper portion re inforcing rods for counteracting compression. In the tension zone it is provided with a reinforcing bar c of U-shaped or l-l-shaped cross-section. To prevent the lower edges of the sleeper from being easily damaged reinforcing rods e are inserted which are furdenote simil ar Specification of Letters Patent.

nished with wire teeth l which insure greater retaining capacity. The rods e are at intervals connected with the bar c by transverse loops z'. The bar c has oblong holes in position where the rails are laid, said holes passing through the thickness of the sleeper and allowing the positioning of the fastening bolts for the rails. The heads of the fastening bolts are squared so as to fit between the flanges of the bar o and allow them to be fixed by means of a screw-nut without the bolts turning.
Referring now to th-e modification shown in Figs. 5 8, provision is here made for fixing the rails by means of three bolts of which one is on the outer side of the rails, while two are at the inner side of the rails. For this purpose the bar c, which here has an oblong hole f for the fastening bolt at the inner side of the rail, carries yoke plates /L having flanges g and oblong holes f, said plate being fixed to the bar c in such a position as to have the said two holes f along the inner side of the rail.
I claim:
A railway cross tie comprising in combination a concrete member provided with recesses therein, a plurality of series of rein forcing members embedded in said concrete and following the cont-our thereon, one of said series being at the upper edge of said tie, the other of said series being at the lower edge of said tie, the lower series having wire spikes thereon, a relatively heavier bar at the lower portion of said tie and provided with apertures registering with the recesses in the tie to receive the rail bolts, and wire loops connecting said bar and said lower reinforcing member.
In testimony whereof I have set hereunto my hand in presence of two witnesses.
OSKAR ERNST VVETZER.
