PUMP 0R MO'IQB CELIEEZDEP All?) METHOD TLAKXITG Specification of Letters cylinders and methods of making the same,
and constitutes a divisionof my prior app ication, Serial No. 689,46 filed July 19, 1911.
The particular mechanism forming the subject matter of'my originalapplicati'cn is a hydraulic variable speed gear compels ing a pump and a motor having a closed fluid connection whereby the motor is driven by the fluid pressure generated in the pump. In machines of this character Weight is a feature of prime importance, and in order to keep the weight'down it is desirahle to use material of high tensile strength for the parts which Withstand the fluid pressure. To that'end each cylinder with its attached valve chamher is made of a single billet of forged steel, the top of the cylinder'beingconnected to the middle portof the valve chamber by a curved passageway to permit ingress and egress of the fluid.
The subject matter of the present application includes the one piece cylinder and valve chamber as an article of manufacture, and the novel, expeditious and inexpensive method of making the same, as will be fully described in the following specification and pointed out in the appended claims.
In the accompanying drawings I have illustrated my improved structure in various stages of its manufacture, and in the said drawings,
Figure 1 represents in side elevation the solid billet as it comes from the forging press; Fig. 2 is a sectional view on line 22 of Fig. 1 after the connecting passage between the cylinder and valve chamber has been bored; 3 is a longitudinal sectional view of the bored cylinder with the attached valve chamber before the bending operation, l is a similar view; of the completed article showing the part in a convenient form of bending apparatus, and, 5 a side elevation View of t l a article showing a modified step in the process.

T he linl: is provided with an intcgTal extension lei to which power I 1 acre Ell;

The entire machinin pleted before the hendii bending operation may he diately after the passage 8 cated in Fig. suitable L ing substituted for munch l urther, the heating and be.
sininlteneeusly performed, that is, the borecl may be kept heated to its bending temperature throughout the bending opera- 'en. .Jiny suitable means may be employed. -.u1 this purpose for instance gas torches on the bending table directed against the bored pas-s. e-wuy. Unless the bending op; ilu'ilull. is i erfcrincd quite rapidly the mete ,1 of the pass 5 way has to be highly heated in order not to ecol below the necessary p-' inl.=nre b2 ere the bentl is finished. This hurried marl; may result in uneven bends which, wilh excessive heat, may weaken the v-xnlln cf the ,nassugewvny. This contingency is entirely removed by heating the portion to be bent in the manner described, the '2 Se .ilC heat ill, tliii'crent points being wiles-led to properly meet the variations of thickness and curvature of the part.

The overall dimension of the m0- tcr i'ci'luced by reducing the height of the valve chamber to substantially that of the l. l nnrl lhe w. ht of the entire motor c cl by permitting n smaller crank mic at me valve clinn'iber connection Withwill. melon-jinn; the lmgth cf the valve (-hninher. llcrc the billet forged with the web (JLll'Wfill weuld be impcssiblc to bore a. passage through the same. The metal v uuhl have to be machined away with small llllllri, a process so slow and expensive as to lilhl'u liaun ell-set the advantages oi the eeu'vul cnnneclion. By my novel process the 3 Mill curved passage article can be macle quite as cheap as the straight passage type, the metal saved in the crank case or valve chambers more than elf-netting the cost of the simple bending operation.
Claims I 1. As a new article of manufacture, a, forged steel cylinder and valve chamber connected by an integral bored passage-Way.
2. As anew article of manufacture, a, forged steel cylinder and valve chamber connectecl by an integral bored passage-way, said passage-way extending from the top of the cylinder to a point on the valve chamber ofi set therefrom.
3. A pump or motor cylinder comprising a forged steel bored cylinder with a side port at its outer end, a, forged steel bored valve chamber parallel with said cylinder. and connected therewith by an integral curved passzme way connectin said end port of the cylin er with a, midcl e port of the valve chamber, the said passage Way beingbored and having a configuration resulting from. boring the passage way while straight end. subsequently curving the same by bendmg.
In tcslimonyiwhereof, I have signed my name to this specification in the presence of two subscribing witnesses, this 22nd day of January 1913.
