iititrd tetr @wat @twine Letters PatentNo. 107,534, datcd- September 20, 1870.
IMPRQVBMENTJN MANNER or Mo't'rNTrNqgoLow REv'oLvrNG CYLINDERS.
' The Schedule referred to in these Letters Patent and making-*part of the same I I, LEMAN B. PITCHER, of the town of Sali-na, inY the county of Oundaga and State of New York, have inventeda new and improved Manner of Mounting Hollow 'Revolving Cylinders, of lwhich the following is a specification.
This invention relatos to mounting hollow cylinders, to'berevolved on or near a'level line, and used internally asmanufacturing machines, in such a manner that the materials to bewrought can be readily fed into l'such cylinders at one end, while they are revolving, and
sifted out or discharged therefrom. A
The utility of such cylinders depends largely upon the convenience with which they may be fed and dis When made and mounted substantially as described, they maybe advantageously cmployediu preparing lime, sand, gravel, or other materials for, or working them -into mortar' compounds; for sift-ing, screening, or assorting sand, gravel, coal, salt, Ygrain, or other similar articles; in working or commingling earths, fertilizers, or manures for agricultural-purposes; and in `commingling, separating, or manufacturing, with or without fluids or heat, any materials capable ot'v heilig wrought therein, for any purposes whatever.
lo make such cylinders easy to he -approachedand fed into, I mount the receiving end on friction-rollers H H'; and togprevent the cylinder A from-working endwise, and also to renderit convenient,- to revolve themwithacr'ank, D, and otherwise, I mount the discharginglend on a half or short shaft, 1,5, connected with audreaching from `near the middle of the cylinder outwardly,v and restiiig Vin a bearing orbox, JE, outside.
The cylinder A maybe made four feet long, more or less, with paralleler dverging sides, with or with- .out a head piece, O, in one end, with ahole, L, iu the center thereof, twelve inches, more or less, in diameter. It may be made 'of perforated sheet metalin the form of a cylindrical sieve, or of other sifting-materials, or made ot' sheet-iron, or staves of wood, or other suitable materials, as a working and I iot sifting cylinder, and filled or not with teeth, ribs, or bars, as circumstances mayrequire. It .may be constructed in any mechanical mannen-'- vThe receiving end is to he mounted on friction-roliers H H', `of suitable diameter and proportions, and' p roportionedand adjusted in) any mechanical manner' suitable to the cylinder, and the sustaining-frame-or foundation K, so'as to leave; thev en d ofthe' cylinder free to beapproached and fed into. 'Y -f The discharging e'nd of the ycylinder rests on ashort shaft, of suitable size and materials,feXtending from near its middle outwardly fifteen inches,.more or less, beyond th'e cylinder A, and resting in 'a box or bearing, E, supported bythe frame or foundation K.
The` shaft is provided with one or more'set of cross arms,-G G, connecting yit with the cylinder A. It may be' otherwise connected,'i t' in. such a manner that they are each held in proper position while revolving. v -On 'the shaft, on each side 0f the box E, collars ad are to be adjusted, or-by some equivalent means, to prevent the cylinder A working endwise.
Tothe eud'of the shaft B a hand-crank, D, is affixed, by which to revolve the cylinder A. It maybe -revolved in any othertneeliancal manner.
. .What I claim as my invention, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-' lThe arrangement of partsl herein shown, for supporting oneend of the cylinder A ou friction-rollers H H', and theother end of -said'cylinder A on a short or half shaft, B, substantially as shown and described, for the purposes s'et forth,
,- LEMAN B. PITCHER.
