TILTING FURNACE FOR SMELTING PYRITES AND SULFUR GEES.
Application filed'April 12, 1913.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, EMIL KNUDsnN, a subject of the King of Norway, residing at Miihlbach, Austria-Hungary, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Tilting Furnaces for Smelting Pyrites and Sulfur Ores; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, and to letters or figures of reference marked thereon, which form a part of this specification.
My invention relates to improvements in furnaces for smelting of pyrites or sulfid ores consisting in the features of construction and combination of parts hereinafter described and illustrated on the accompanying drawings and more particularly as claimed in the annexed claim.
In the following I shall now proceed to describe an eXecutional form of my invention, reference being had to the accompanying drawings where:
Figure 1 is a longitudinal sectional view and Fig. 2 is a cross section of the furnace on the line II on Fig. 1.
The furnace shown is a tilting furnace and is formed as a cylinder, the bottom of which is provided in one end with a recess or sump 1 which is an essential feature of my furnace which is of the Bessemer type, the blast pipes 2 opening into said recess. The part of the furnace between the recess 1 and the opposite end wall 3 of the furnace is tapering toward the said end wall so that the bottom of the furnace will slope toward the recess 1 in all the positions of the furnace.
Above the smelting recess the furnace is provided with a charge opening 4 adapted to be closed by means of a cover 5 of refractory material. Besides the charge opening 4 the furnace has another charge opening 6 near its opposite end. This charge opening 6 is radially out of alinement with the opening 4 above the blast-holes and is inclined backwardly relative to this opening so that the molten material will always es- Specificationof Letters Patent.

cape through the opening 4 when the furnace is discharged by tilting it in the di rection of the arrow Fig. 2. The furnace is provided with circular tracks 7 that rest in grooved rollers 8, to facilitate tilting the furnace.
In using this furnace for example for smelting an ore with a low percentage of sulfur I prefer to first smelt the ore together with a comparatively great percentage of coke the opening 4 being kept closed by the cover 5 during this process. The gases are therefore compelled to pass through the furnace before escaping and thus the latent heat of said gases is utilized for smelting purposes. When the ores thus charged have been smelted a new quantity of ores is charged through the opening 6 and these ores will, when smelted, pass into the smelting bath in front of the blast-openings. After the required quantity of ores have been charged the slag is removed and the blowing is continued so as to get white metal and copper, the opening 4 above the blast-holes being kept open during this part of the process. Thus it is made possible even when treating ores with low percentage of sulfur to perform the complete treatment in this furnace without using a shaft-furnace for smelting. In a way, the furnace itself serves as a horizontal shaft-furnace the ores being charged in one end of same passing in a smelted condition from this end into the recess 1 at twyers where the final treatment takes place.
Owing to the comparatively great length of this furnace it is also possible to obtain a smelting bath, which is so shallow that the required pressure in the blast-pipes may be a small one, not exceeding 3; atmosphere. The form of the smelting bath in front of the blast-pipes also makes it possible to treat even comparatively small quantities of copper without influencing the utility of the furnace for directly smelting ores and intermediate products.
I claim:
A tilting furnace of the Bessemer type for smelting pyrites and sulfur ores, comprising a tilting body portion having a sump, twyers arranged to direct a blast into the sump, a hearth on Which the material is charged at the side of said sump and tWyers, and inclined toward the sump, said furnace having two angularly displaced openings, one over the sump and the other over the hearth and a closure for the opening over the sump.
