Description

ateat @tritium GEORGE F. BURTAND EDWIN A. HILDRETH, Aor Hamann,l MASSACHU- serre. I t
- Letters Patent No. 107l ,445, dated September 20, V`1870.
v 0.0 IMPROVEMENT 1N BRooMfconN SEED-STRIPPES.-
The Schedule referred tain these Letters Patent and making part of the same.
` .We,.GEo nGE E. Bom: and Enwrn A. HrLnRETn, both of Harvard, county of Worcester, and State of Massachusetts, have invented a new and useful Im` provement in Broom-corn Seed-Strippers or Scrapers, of which thefollowing is a specification'.
Nature and Objects of the Invention.
1t has been found, instripping or scraping the seed from broom-corn bymeans ot' revolving cylinders armed with teeth, that the long limbcr fibers of the brush, it not kept entirely away from the revolving' parts of thc bearings, are very liable to wind around the cylindersbaft at y,the ends, clogging them, and causing the boxes and-bearings to heat, compelling the operators to stop running the machine to free the bearings, thus causing liability of injuring the machine, annoyance,
I and loss oftime at a very busy season.
'lo 'overcome this object-ion is vthe object of this invention. l The nature of this` invention consists in constructing'au auxiliary stationary head, having a beveledA edge, and xed .permanently to they frame, in such'a position that f-thedngs or periphery of the cylinder shall project beyond the bevel 4of -thc' auxiliary head, which is constructed to cover entirely all the revolving parts at'the ends of the cylinder except theouter `rim or lags, into which the teeth are fixed.
Vire construct our broom-corn scraper cylinders either solid or' with heads and lags armed with' steel teeth, and firmly attach them to asti-ong mainframe of any suitable material. n
Description of the AccompanyingDrawing.
Figure lis an end view of the cylinder, and shows the projectingr lags or ring-the tee-tb, theauxiliaiy stationaryhead, and supporting-box.
Figure 2 s a vertical section through the centra-l axs'of the cylinder-,showing all the partis.
' General Description;
D is a'cylinder.
E is the shaft or axle;.
B B are boxes.
O is the frame.
b b are stationary orA auxiliary heads, constructed with .beveled edges, and are firmly attached to the boxes B B by means of screws or bolts.
A A are lags or projecting rims, that entirelyI surrundthe' stationary heads b b, and project beyond t ein. v
The auxiliary heads b b are constructed with the outer edge beveled, and t into the recess formed by the projecting Arim A, which is made to extend beyond the beveled edge. A
The rba acts to strengthen thefliead b, and holds the stationary head. y
A pulley, j', for driving the cylinder is represented by the dotted lines in fig. 2.
to revolve rapidly, and broom-brush filled with seed is placed iin contact with the teeth, in order to strip 'the seed from the brush, the long limber iberof the brush tends to wind outhe periphery of Vthe cylinder', but the diameter of thc cylinder is so great that .the brush is not of Asuiicieut length to reach around it"-on the main l hody, but at the end of'the'cylinder, be@ tween the supporting-box B and the revolvng'end, the cylinder draws the brush toward the shaft or the center.. A
Non', as the stationaryhezul b lis sunk into -the end of the revolving cylinder D, and its outer edge is beveled, as shown in fig'. 2,-the brush is guided, by the auxiliary or stationary head, beyond the open joint between the revolving head of the cylinder and the si1ppo`1'tingbox,'the beveled edge of the stationary head guiding thc brush and freeing itvfroni the rebroom-corn, of the cylinder D, shaft E, auxiliary and .stationary head b, provided with a beveled edge, as
' shown, and the supporting-l oxes B, substantially as described, and for the purpose set forth.
