To all whom it may concern Be it known that I, SALLIn S. Gnooxnn, a citizen of the United States, residing at Lakewood, in the county of Ocean and State of New Jersey, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Stops or Buffers for Flush-Tanks, of which the following is a specification.

My invention relates to stops or buffers for the levers controlling the outlet of flushing tanks of water closets, or similar mechanism in other apparatus.

The object of my invention is, first: to provide a stop or buffer which may be adj usted to any of .the existing forms of flush tanks whether of the overhead or low cabinet form, and to any position or length of the controlling leveri; second: to provide a stop which can be adjusted not-only for any distance which the lever is from the ends or sides of the tank, but at the same time adapt the same to any width of the lever and accurately guide the same against the elastic material forming the buffer section of the stop; and third: to make a stop which will be easy of application and adjustment, While at the same time the several parts comprising the inventioncan be cheaply and easily manufactured, and when necessary, worn out parts may be readily replaced by new parts when occasion requires it.

With these and other objects in view, that will more fully appear from the detailed description hereinafter referred to, the invention consists of structural features and relative arrangements of the several parts comprising the invention, which will be hereinafter more fully described and particularly pointed out in the appended claims.

For a full understanding of the invention and merits thereof, and also to acquire the details of the construction, reference is to be had to the following description and accompanying drawings, in which Figure 1 is a sectional view of a lower cabinet tank with the stop or buffer applied thereto; Fig. 2 is a similar View showing the invention applied to an overhead tank; Fig. 3 is a respective view of the several parts of the stop; Fig. a is a side view of the adjustable arm with its variable buffer end in section; Fig. 5 is a perspective view of one of the elastic sections forming the end of the buffer.

In the drawings, the same reference characters indicate the corresponding and like parts in the several views.

For the purpose of illustrating one and the preferred form of my invention in the drawings by reference to Figs. 3, 4 and 5; 1 represents a plate having openings 2, 2, for the reception of screws or nails to suitably fasten the same to the inner wall of a tank 4-, as shown in Fig. 1, or to a bracket or extension 5, attached to an overhead tank 6, as indicated in Fig. 2. Extending from the plate section 1 is a hollow cylinder 7 having an upper slot 8; adapted to loosely fit and slide into the tubular extension 7 is a rod 9 provided on its end with a depending enlargement 10 having an opening 11. Said rod 9 has in its upper sidea screw threaded hole 12 to receive a screw 13 adapted to pass through the slot 8 and securely hold the rod 9 in any adjusted position within the hollow cylinder 7.

The numeral 14: indicates a bolt snugly passing through the opening 11 of the enlargement 10and is adapted to receive a series of separate and independent elastic washers 15 shown in Fig. 5, and which may be made of rubber, felt or cloth, or any other elastic material, said elastic washers forming the buffer end. A removable plate 16 passes over the outer end of the bolt 14:, and presses against and holds the wash rs 15 on said bolt 14:, by means of a nut 17, engaging the threaded end of the bolt. The number of the washers 15 011 the bolt let may be varied to enlarge or decrease the distance between the lower outwardly flared ends of the enlargement 10, and plate 16, to accommodate the difference in widths or sizes of the levers 18 (see Figs. 1 and 2) for controlling the flushing of the closets. It will also be readily understood that the herein disclosed construction permits the stop not only to be used in the position shown in Figs. 1 and 2, but also-when the flared ends of the enlargement 10 and plate 16 are turned upwardly and hence act as a stop for the levers 18, in their downward direction.

It will be readily seen that the stop or buffer herein disclosed has a wide range of application, in that the same can be placed in any position not only as to the height from the bottom of the tank and the distance extending horizontally from the side walls of the tank, but at the same time the distance between the flaring ends forming the guide for the lever toward the buffer is readily adjustable and adapted to all kinds and widths of controlling levers.

' What I claim is 1. A stop or bufier for the flush lever of a closet tank comprising a plate adapted to be secured to the tank, a hollow cylinder extending from said plate, a rod adapted to slide into said hollow cylinder and having an enlargement at its end with an opening therein, a rod or bolt securely held from said enlargement and supported in said opening, a series of separate and independent elastic washers held on said rod or bolt, and a removable plate passing over the outer end of the bolt or rod and against the outer washer, and means for securing said removable plate to the bolt or rod.

2. A stop or butter for the flush lever of a closet tank comprising a plate adapted to be secured to the tank, a hollow cylinder extending from said plate and having a slot in its upper side, a rod adapted to slide into said hollow cylinder and having an enlargement at its end with an opening therein, a screw adapted to pass through the slot and engage the rod, a rod or bolt securely held from said enlargement and supported in said opening, a series of separate and independent elastic washers held on said rod or bolt, and a removable plate passing over the outer end of the bolt or rod and against the outer Washer, and means for securing said removable plate to the bolt or rod.

A stop or buffer for the flush lever of a closet tank comprising a plate adapted to be secured to the tank, a hollow cylinder extending from said plate and having a slot in its upper side, a rod with a threaded hole adapted to slide into said hollow cylinder and having an enlargement at its end with an opening therein, a screw adapted to pass through the slot and engage said threaded hole in the rod, a rod or bolt securely held 'justed and locked intosaid hollow cylinder and having an enlargement at its end, a rod or bolt projecting from said enlargement, a series of washers removably held on said rod or bolt, and a removable plate passing over the outer end of the bolt or rod and against the outer washer, and means for securing said removable plate to the bolt or rod.

5. A stop or buffer for the flush lever of a closet tank comprising a plate adapted to be secured to the tank, a hollow rod extending from said plate, a rod having one end adapted to slide into said hollow rod and its other end provided with an enlarged and flat guide, a pin projecting from said fiat guide, a butter held on said pin, and a removable guide plate passing over the outer end of the pin and retaining said bufier on said pin. v
