To all whom 'it may concern.
Be it known that I, JOHN B. BAnTHoLo- Mnw, a citizen of the United States, residing at Peoria, in the county ot leoria` and Stato of illinois, have invented certain new and useful improvements in lVagons, ot' which the following is a specification, reference being had therein to the accompanying drawing.
This invention relates to wagons, and especially to wagons of that type which are adapted to be drawn by traction engines, either singly or in trains.
A wagon embodying my invention is adapted for carrying' crushed rock or other' similar heavy materials.
The objects oit the invention are to provide wagons ot' this class having improved frame parts, and improved means for connecting the wheels with the frame and body.
lWith these and other objects in view, the invention consists in the construction and arrangement of parts which I have shown in the accompanying drawings. I desire it to be understood, however, that many changes may be made in the construction without departing from the spirit of my invention.
Of the drawings--Figure 1 is a side elevation, Fig. 2 is a plan view7 and Fig. 3 is an ond elevation.
Referring to the drawings, 1 represents as a whole the body supporting iframe. This frame is rectangular and comprises four beams oit structural steel connected at their corners by angle- plates 2, 2. The beams may be either I-beams or channels, but in the drawings have shown the short end beams 3, 3 as I-beams, and the long side beams 4l, 4; as channels. immediately beneath each end frame beam 3 are two structural steel sections 5 and 6, preferably I- beams. These sections are somewhat shorter than the beams 3, and are bolted or riveted to each other and to the end beam in such a way that the webs ot' all three sections are in vertical alinement.

These wheels are provided with broad tires which permit the use ot' the wagon ou sott roads without injury to the road, and` without excessive loss of power.

give longitudinal support to the bottom parts of the fifth wheels, which may be considered as comprising the castings 9 and 10. These braces 26 are connected at their inner ends to the wagon body and at their outer ends are provided with apertures through which pass the lower ends of the king bolts 11, 11. The braces are held in place by means of suitable devices such as washers and cotter pins. n
27, 27 represent diagonal braces connectwith the sides of thebottom framework of the wagon body.V These braces are riveted to the straps 27a, and in this way a direct metallic connection is made between the two axles. The straps 27a have been shown in the drawings as connected with and reinforcing the body structure, but it will beunderstood that if desired, separate links corresponding in function to the straps 27a may be used for connecting the inner ends of the braces 27. The purpose of the connecting vsystem comprising' the braces or lreaches 2,6, the braces 27 and the straps 27a is to provide ya tension transmitting device which shall be as straight and direct as possible.
Near the outer ends of each of the axles 12 are provided clips 28, 28, each having outer and inner eyes 29 and 30. The outer eyes 29 are adapted to have connected to them by suitable pins, links 31, 31. The forward ends of these links are connected to a traction engine, or to another wagon, and thereforer serve as draft links for drawing the wagon. r1`he inner eyes 30, 30 of the clips 2S, 2S are adapted to be connected with locking links 32, 32. rIhese links are forked at their inner ends and are adapted to lit over the braces 27, 27 and to kbe secured thereto by means of pins 33, 33.
As has been stated, wagons embodying my invention are adapted to be hauled by traction engines either singly or in trains. In order that each wagon mayy have another wagon connected with it to be hauled, I provide an aperture in the outer end of each reach 26 as shown in F ig. 2. When two or more wagons are to be connected together, the draft links 31, 31 of one wagon are connected by means of a suitable pin to the reach 26 of the next wagon.

At one end of each shaft is a ratchet wheel 35, and a pawl 36 is provided to engage with each ratchet wheel. The outer ends of the shafts 34 are squared and are adapted for engagement by a crank such as indicated by 37. Chains 38, 38 are connected to the shafts 34, 34 near their outer ends and are adapted to be wound upon the shafts. The lower ends of the chains 38 are connected to horizontal levers 39, 39 at the ends of which are connected other chains 40. rIhe lower ends of the chains 40 are connected to the doors 19, 19 by means of suitable devices such as staples 41, 41 and T-bars It will be noted that when the wagon is filled with material and one of the pawls 36 is released, the weight of the doors will cause them to open, the chain 3 8 Abeing unwound from the `shaft 34. l/Vhen it is desired to close the doors, the crank 37 is connected to the end of the shaft, and the shaft is turned to wind the `chain 38.l The link 39 serves to equalize the forcefwhi'ch is transmitted to the two doors, and the result is that the doors are normally closedA simultaneously. However, if a piece of rockor other substance should become so lodged as to prevent the complete closing of one of the doors, the link 39 will tip and permit the complete closing of the other door. y

may be secured in place at the end opposite to the links 31, 31. In this way it is always possible to secure whichever pair of wheels is in the rear in alinement with the direction of motion.
t will be observed that the framework of t-he wagon is largely independent of the body and that the framework is adapted to take the greater part of thestresses due to the load. Even the load on the doors 19 s transmitted through the chains directly to the framework. The stresses due to the movement of the wagon are taken almost entirely by the reaches 26, 26, the diagonal braces 27, 27 and the connecting straps 27a, 27a. It will therefore be seen that the body itself is free from all unnecessary stresses.
In a co-pending application, Serial No. 552,685, filed Mar. 31, 1910, of which this application is a division, I have shown and claimed the specific draft connections which are herein disclosed.

In a wagon, the combination of a frame comprising two side beams of structural metal sections, two end beams of structuralV metal sections and a plurality of supplementary structural metal sections secured parallel to and beneath each of the Vend beams with their webs in vertical alinement Y metal sections, two end beams of structural metal sections and a plurality of supplementary Structural metal sections secured parallel to and beneath each of the end beams with their Webs in vertical alinement with the web of the end beam, supporting Wheels, connections between the supporting wheels and the lower of the supplementary metal sections, one of said connections comprising a fifth wheel, a body located within and suspended 'from the said frame, and 10 connecting devices between the body and the wheels, substantially as set forth.
