Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented Sept. 9, 1913.
Application filed. February 4, 1913. Serial No. 746,153.
To all whom it may concern Be it known that I, THEODORE C. CHRIS- TENSEN, a citizen of the United States, residing at Menominee, in the county of Menominee and State of Michigan, have invented a new and useful Register for .Filing Another object of the invention is to provide novel means for manipulating and'controlling the movement of the lever whereby the leaves are actuated.
It is within the scope of the invention to improve generally and to increase the utility of, devices of that type to which the present invention appertains.
With the foregoing and other objects in view which will appear as the description proceeds, the invention resides in the combination and arrangement of parts and in the details of construction hereinafter described and claimed, it being understood that changes in the precise embodiment of theinvention herein disclosed, can be made within the scope of what is claimed, without departing from the spirit of the invention.
In the drawings :Figure 1 shows the in vention in perspective; Fig. 2 is a-perspective of the leaf raising lever. Fig. 3is a perspective of the latch block; Fig.4 is a sectional elevation of the latch block and the head whereby the latch block is supported; Fig. 5 is a vertical longitudinal section of the complete device; Fig. 6 is a sectional detail of the leaf raising lever and its mounting. Fig. 7 is a perspective'showing'the indicator and attendant parts; and Fig. 8 is an elevation of a portion of the case.
In carrying out the invention there is provided a case 1, equipped in its interior with upper supports 2 and with lower supports 3, the supports 2 and 3 extending from one end of the case toward the other end thereof. The supports 2 and 3 are connected by upright rods 4. p
The invention further includes a plurality of leaves 5 and of these leaves 5 there may be any number. The leaves 5 are equipped along their edges with bearings 6, receiving the rods 4, to the end that the leaves 5'may be moved vertically. The leaves 5 normally any suitable mechanism rest upon the lower supports 3. Each leaf 5 carries any desired number of bill holding clips 7 which may be of any form. In the present instance, each clip 7 is of arched form and carries a name plate 8, the intersecting lower ends 9 of the clips being secured to the plate5.
In one side wall ofthe case 1 there is a transverse slot 10 and projecting upwardly into the slot 10 are teeth 11. Located upon the outside of the case 1 and below the slot 10 is a cleat 12.
A guide rod 17 is located within the case and extends parallel to that wall of the case which is provided with the slot 10. Mounted to slide upon the guide rod 17 and to rotate thereon is a tubular bearing 17, and secured to one end of the tubular bearing 17 is a tubular head 100 carrying a projecting arm 15 provided at its upper end with an enlargement l6. An indicator 29 is provided, the same bemg in the form of a bar, having at its upper end an outstanding finger 31 adapted to move along a series of characters 33 inscribed'upon the upper edge of one wall of the case 1. The indicator 29 lies between onewall of the case and one ofthe upper supports 2, as will be understood best when Fig. 5 is examined, the construction being such that when the tubular bearing 17 is rotated upon the guide rod 17 the finger 31 of the indicator 29 will be held upon the characters 33 by the said upper support 2. In order that the tubular bearing 17 may rotate without swinging the indicator 29, I
may be provided. In the present instance, the lower end of the indicator 29 is equipped with a transverse head 101 terminally engaged within the head 100, the head 100 being slotted as indicated at 102, so that the head 100 may rotate upon its axis, without swinging the indicator 29. If desired, one end of the transverse head 101 of the indicator 29 may be held beneath a removable plate 103 which is secured to the part 100. Secured to the opposite end of the tubular bearing 17 is a support 14, preferably taking the form of a block, the support or block 14 being provided in :its sides" with slots 25. A latch block 19 is'provided, the same being shown in detail in Fig. 3. The latch block lies in the slot 10 and is provided at its outer end with a button 20 located outside of the case 1. The latch block 19 is provided, below the button 20, with a hook-shaped latch 28 which is adapted to cooperate with the cleat 12 as shown in Fig. 5. The latch block 19 includes an extension 21 having ribs 22' which are slidably received within the sup: port 14. 'A pin 2 outstands from'the ribs 22 and is received in the slots 25 of tl1'e sup-, port 14, to aid in guiding the sliding move:
one end of the spring 27 being secured to the cross pin 24: and the other end of the spring being secured to the support '14,
The operation of the device as'hereinbe fore described, is as follows:-W hen it is desired to elevate any one of the leaves 5, the button 20 is engaged by the hand of the operator, and the lever comprising the members 14, 17 and 15 is swung vertically upon the rod 17 until the portion 16 of the arm 15 lies below the lower edges of the leaves 5. The lever is then slid longitudinally of the rod 17 until the index finger 31 of the in dicator 29 registers above the character 33 which is peculiar to the leaf 5 which is to be elevated. When the cooperation between thej finger 31 and the appropriate character "33 indicates that the portion. 16 of the arm 15 is beneath the proper leaf 5, the button 20 may be depressed, causing an elevation of the portion 16 of the arm 15, and causing an elevation of the selected leaf 5.
When the button 20 is depressed to cause an elevation of the arm 15, the support 14' will register between certain of the teeth 11 and thus further sliding movement of the lever will beprevented. At the same time, the 40 latch block 19 is drawnjout-wardly, putting the spring 27 under tension. When the latch block 19 is released, the latch '28 will engage beneath the cleat 12, and thus a dropping of the arm 15 will be prevented,
the selected leaf being held in an appropriate position. In order to; lower the se-' lected leaf, the latch block 19 is pulled outwardly by means of the button 20, so that the latch 28 no longer is engaged beneath the clea't"12. Then, the tubular bearing 17 may be rotated on the rod 17 to permit a lowering of the arm 15 and a lowering of the selected leaf 5. i
Having thus described theinventiomwhat is claimed is p In a device of the class described, a case; 1 a plurality of individually movable leavesin the case; a support upheld by the case; a lever mounted on the support to slide there- 6 on, thereby to position the inner end of the lever in operative relation to any'leaf, the lever being mounted to swing with the support as a center; a latch movably mounted on the outer end of the lever; and means for receiving the latch to hold the lever against both sliding and swinging movement, the latch, when disengaged from said means, constituting means for sliding and swinging the lever. I V V V In testimony that I claim the foregoing as my own, I have hereto affixed my signature in the presence of two witnesses.
