WRENCH.
To all whom it may concern: 7
Be it known that I, PAL BALKO, a citizen of the United States, residing at Milwaukee, in the county of Milwaukee and State of Wisconsin, have invented new and useful Improvements in Wrenches, of which the following is a specification.
The present invention relates to wrenches and particularly to that class of wrenches known as monkey wrenches, and the object of the invention is the provision of means whereby the sliding jaw of the wrench may be moved toward or away from the stationary jaw by the rotation of the handle of the wrench, and also particularly to the means of connecting the rotatable handle with the sliding jaw. 1
With the above recited objects in view, and others which will appear as the nature of the invention is more fully understood, the improvement resides in the construction, combination and arrangement of parts set forth in the following specification and falling within the scope of the appended claim.
In the drawing: Figure 1 is a central vertical longitudinal sectional view of a wrench constructed in accordance with my improvement, Fig. 2 is a sectional view on the line 2-2 of Fig. 1, Fig. 3 is a similar sectional view on the line 3 3 of Fig. 1, Fig. 4 is a detail longitudinal sectional view through the sliding jaw, and Fig. 5 is a similar sectional view through the rotatable handle.
Referring now to the drawing, the numeral 1 designates the stationary jaw which has its head 2 provided with an integrally formed angular shank 3, the said shank having its end formed with a centrally arranged longitudinally extending screw 4.
The numeral 5 designates the slidable jaw which is provided with a substantially rectangular bore 6 that is adapted to be received upon the rectangular shank 3 The inner end of the shank has its bore provided with a circular enlargement 7, The inner end of the shank of the movable jaw 5 is provided with oppositely spaced threaded Specification of Letters Patent.

openings 8, and arranged within the said expanded portion 7, and positioned at the inner end of the shank'is a ring 9 which is provided with threaded openings 10 that are adapted to register with the openings 8, and to receive removable securing elements, in the nature of screws 11.
The numeral 12 designates the handle for the wrench. This handle is formed with a threaded bore or recess 13, the said threads adapted to co-act with the threads of the screw 4. The handle 12 has its upper extremity provided with a reduced extension 14 that is round in cross section and which provides the said handle with a shoulder 15. The outer end of the annular extension 14 is provided with threaded depressions 16, and arranged upon the outer end of the said portion 14 is a ring 17 which is provided with a plurality of openings that are adapted for the reception of securing elements, such as screws 18 which engage the threaded depressions 16.
In assembling the parts of the wrench, the rectangular shank 3 is passed within the bore 6 of the sliding jaw 5. The ring 17, is moved from the annular extension 14 to per unit of the arrangement of the ring 9 thereon, the ring 9, it will be understood, having previously been removed from the jaw of the shank 9. The ring 17 is then secured upon the portion 14 of the handle 12, and the said handle is rotated upon the screw 4 of the shank 3 until its shoulder abuts with the end of the shank of the jaw 5. The ring 9 is arranged so that its openings 10 will register with the openings 8 of the shank of the jaw 5, and thereafter the securing elements 11 are passed through the registering openings, thus connecting the handle 12 for rotary movement with relation to the jaw 5.
From the above description, taken in connection with the accompanying drawing, the simplicity of the device, as well as the advantages thereof, will, it is thought, be perfectly apparent to those skilled in the art to which such inventions appertain, without further detailed description.

ring secured to theouter end of the handle and engaging the enlarged bore of the shdlng aw outward of the first described rlng' and in contact therewith. V r 15 In testimony whereof I aflix niy signature in presence of two witnesses. V
