To all whom it may concern:

Be it known that I, VICTOR A. TREADWELL, a citizen of the United States, residing at Detroit, in the county of Wayne and State of Michigan, have invented new and useful Improvements in Berths, of which the fol lowing is a specification.

An object of the invention is to provide a berth for use on vessels and the like, and which is self-leveling so that the berth will not swing with the motion of the vessel, but will remain in a substantially vertical plane regardless of the tilting of the vessel.

The invention embodies, more particularly, a berth for use on vessels and which is not subject to the usual rocking motion of the vessel, thus obviating the chances of per' sons occupying the berth becoming seasick.

In the further disclosure of the invention reference is to be had to the accompanying drawings, constituting a part of this specification, in which similar characters of reference denote corresponding parts in all the views, and in which:

10 designates the floor of a vessel and 11 the ceiling thereof, a strap 12 being secured to the ceiling in any convenient manner and provided with a ring 13 interlocked with a ring 14;, arranged at right angles to the ring 13 and having connection with a strap 15, the lower end of which is secured to the top of a casing 16 to suspend the casing in spaced relation to the floor 10.

The casing 16 is preferably rectangular in shape and contains spaced shelves 17, formin g compartments 18, it being readily understood that the usual bedding is placed upon the shelves 17 to provide upper and lower berth members, The casing 16 includes a bottom 19, and formed beneath the bottom and having the bottom constituting a portion thereof is a weight-pan 20 adapted toreceive weights for retaining the casing 16 in a substantially level position regardless of any tilting of the ceiling 11 from which the casing depends.

23 passed through eyelets 24: of the braces and through the plates 21, the said braces belng arranged to extend from the corners 1 toward the center and above the casing 16 and having rigid connection with the strap 15 adjacent the ring 1 f thereof.

Contractile springs 25 are secured to the floor 10 and to the ceiling 11 and the said springs have connection with eye members 2-6 passing through the plates 21, suitable thumb screws 27 having threaded connection with the eye members 26 and adapted to abut against the plates so that by tightening the thumb screws up on the eye members the tension of the springs 25 can be increased or decreased, as will be readily apparent from the views, thus cushioning the casing 16 suspended from the ceiling 11.

From the foregoing description it will be seen that the structure disclosed is of a simple construction in which the various parts are arranged so as to provide a berth which will at all times remain substantially level regardless of the tilting of the vessel in which the berth is mounted, while the springs 25 constitute cushion members for cushioning any jar to which the berth may be subjected, the said springs being adjustable to increase or decrease the cushioning effect thereof.

Having thus described my invention, I claim:

1. In a berth, the combination with a floor and ceiling, of a strap secured to the ceiling, a ring carried by the strap, a second ring interlocked with the first ring and lying at right angles thereto, a strap carried by the second ring, a casing having the lower end of the strap secured thereto to suspend the said casing between the ceiling and the floor, plates secured to the corners of the casing, braces secured to the plates and to the easing at the four corners of the casing, the said braces having connection with the second strap, springs having connection with the floor and ceiling and with the said plates, and means for adjusting the said springs to increase or decrease the tension thereof relatively to the said casing.
