Be it known that I, CHARLES F. ASHLEY, a citizen of the United States, residing at Bolton, inthe countyk of yColumbus and State of North Carolina, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Sawmill-Carriage Feeds; and I do declarethe following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same, reference being had to the accompanying-drawings, ence marked thereon, which form a part of this specification. 1 e
My invention relates to sawV mills, and more particularly to saw mill carriages; and it has for its object to provide an improved construction having relation to the feed or travel of the carriage, and to eifecting an automatic control orv check in the travelof the carriage in the event of the sawyer losving control or failing at the proper time to check or reverse the travel of the carriage.
VTo the accomplishment of the foregoing and such other objects as may hereinafter appear, the invention consists in the features hereinafter particularly described and then sought to be clearly defined by the claims, reference being had to the accompanying drawingforminga part hereof and in whiche Figure ly is a side elevation of so much of a saw mill carriage and feed as necessary to illustrate my inventionk applied thereto; Fig. 2 is a top plan view of the parts villustrated in Fig. l; Fig. 3 a perspective view of the parts vembodying my invention, showing the relation of the several parts, with the carriage, itstrack and *frame omitted. l
ln the `drawing the numeral 1 designates a supporting frame of any appropriate construction; 2 a carriage; and 3 a fluid pressure cylinder havingy its piston 4 connected by a rod 5 to aj swinging bracket 6 attached to the carriage, which parts may be of any approved type of construction. i
`Beneath the carriage, Vat vopposite ends and below the cylinder 3, there' is arranged a series of casings, those at one end designated by the characters la, 2a, 3a, laand 5, in communication with each other, and those at the other end by the characters lb, 2b, 3b, 4b, and 5", inV communication with each other. Each of the casings with the and to the letters and figures of refer-V exception of casings la, and 1b are provided with valves, and the casings 3a, ta, 3b, and 4b are provided with exhaust pipes 6a, 7a, 6, 7", respectively, of which the two former may discharge into a main exhaust pipe 8a and the lother two into a main exhaust pipe 8b.
A live steam pipe 9L leading from afsuit-v able source of controllable supply opens into the casing l` and from it a by-pass pipe l()a leads to the casing 5a and a branch pipe 11a from .the same casing to the casing l? from which a pipe 12a leads into one endof the piston cylinder 3; while a live steam pipe 9b leading from the source of supply opens into the casing' 4L" and from it f a by-pass pipe l0b leads to the casing 5b and a branch pipe 11b from the same casing to the casing 1b from which a pipe 12b leads into the adjacent end of the piston cylinder 3. lt ywill thus be observed that the construction of the casings and their' connections are the same at both ends of the piston cylinder.
The'casings 3a 4a 3b 4b are each provided with a valve of approved construction which in one position will cut oil' the sup.- plyl of live steam and open to its exhaust pipe and in another' position will open to live steam and cut off its exhaust, while the valves of the casings 2a and 2b will bean s ends to the bell-crank lever 3d of the valve in vcasing 3b and yalso to a bell-crank lever 8 fulcrumed on a crossbar 9 and provided with an operating rod 10V vfor the sawyer. The bell-crank lever of the valves to casings 3a and Share-formed as illustrated so that when the connecting rod is moved in one direction the valve in one casing will be opened to live steam and in the other 'valve .in casing 3a and intermediate of its vcasing opened to exhaust, and V viceversa tions and steam will be admitted and exhausted as before the valves were'automatically operated, and if the carriage be moved far enough to again strike the trip the same automatic checking and reversal will occur; and more or less recurrences of this alternate partial supply and partial exhausting of' steam to and from opposite sides of the piston will result iii practical counterball ancing of steam pressure `on both sides of the piston and thus bring" the carriage to a state of rest. This cushioning of the piston followed up by supply of live steam through the by-pass will allow the carriage to be started gradually on its return travel instead of being started with greater impetus incident to admitting full pressure lthrough the sawyers valve without a preliminary cushioning and reversal effected as described.
ln thetravel of t-lie carriage from right to left under normal conditions, whenever the carriage strikes the left-hand positioned trip 11d that trip will be depressed and the arms l2 and 14: moved so as to actuate the'rods v13 and l5 to open valve in casing 5ar and close thevalves incasings 2a and 1lb so that the operation .will be like that described for the partsin travel of the carriage from left to right.k
In the manner described l provide a comparatively simple and compact. arrangement of parts accurate and yefficient for the purv poses described andinsuring an automatic control'of the carriage in its travel'back and forth so that injury to the mechanism and to the operators is guarded-against and prevented. f y l A i. I have described particularly the preferred arrangement of the several parts but the same vmay be varied and essential yfeatures of the invention retained.
Havingdescribed my invention and set first mentioned valve mechanism, a third valve mechanism for admission of fluid kpressure to the cylinder when the second valve mechanism cuts off the supply of fluid pressure, and conduits for the pressure fluid in which the valve mechanisms are ycontained, substantially as described.
2. lThe combination with al carriage, a cylinder, a piston therein and rod connecting it with the carriage, of valve mechanism intermediate of the source of pressure fluid supply and said cylinder for controlling the pressure fluid supply and comprising an exhaust port and valve for controlling said port and passage of the fluid pressure, a second valve mechanism rbetween the-first mentioned valve mechanism and said cylinder for controlling the supply of pressure fluid to the cylinder and comprising an exhaust port and valve for controlling said n port and in communication with said first mentioned valve mechanism and the cylinder, said valve mechanisms operating to permit passage of pressure liuid to the cylinder when both are closed to their exhausts and to permit exhaust of fluid from the cylinder through the exhaust of one valvemechanism when the exhaust is open and the exhaust of the other valve mechanism is closed, and conduits for the pressure yfluid in which the valve mechanisms are cont-ained, substantially as described.

The combination with a carriage, a cylinder, a pistontherein and rod connecting it with the carriage, of valve mechanisms operatively connected together for manual operation to supply. pressure fluid to one side of the cylinder piston and permit exhaust of fluid from the opposite side -of the iston in alternation valve mecha- 3 7 nisms for cuttingl oi supply of pressure fluid to the manually operated valve mechanisms, valve mechanisms for cutting o exhaust fluidfrom the cylinder to the manually operated valve mechanisms, and valve mechanisms located in by-passes for the supply of pressure fluid to the cylinder, said valve mechanisms being operatively connected with the valve mechanisms which cut off exhaust from the cylinder to the manually operated valve mechanisms and operative therewith to cut off exhaust from the end of the cylinder when pressure fluid yis supplied to that end of the cylinder ,by wayk of the valve controlled by-pass, substantially as described.
