The valve 9, is so disposed that when lowered so as to open the discharge passage 7, said valve engages thebottom of the vat and will close the passage 11, leading to the passage or compartment at the end of the vat. The cover plate or support 12, extends across the top of the vat directly over the propeller chamber, and is spaced from said partitions 3, and. 4, so as to form a passage 13, between the cover or board, covering the top of the propeller chamber. A valve 14, closes the discharge opening 8, when the parts are in the position shown in' Fig. II, and when said valve 14, is opened, the outer edge ot the valve will engage the cover or support 12, and close the passage 13. Valves 9 and 14, when in open position, serve not only to close the passage in rear of the valves, but also form deflcctors which aid in the even circulation of the dye liquor.
The valves 9, and 14, are connected by a link 15, which is of such length that when one of said valves is closed the other is held in open position. The upper valve is pivoted at its outer face to a link 16, which extends through a suitable opening in the cover plate and is slidingly and pivotally connected with one end of a rock arm 17. The rock arm 17, is pivotcd to a bracket 18, on the supporting plate 12. As a means for manipulating the rock arm 17, so as to periodically close one valve and open the other, We have provided a shaft 1t), which is journaled in suitable brackets 20, mounted on the cover plate 1Q. Said shaft may be driven in any desired way, as by a sprocket wheel 21. A worin 22, is mounted on said shaft 19, and engages a worin wheel 23, mounted on an inclined shaftI 24, journaled in a suitable bracket 25, on the cover plate l2. a countershaft 2S. The countershaft 28, is journaled in suitable bearings carried by the bracket 25. On the outer end of the coun tershaft 2S, is a cam 29, which is formed with a concentric portion 30, and a flat substantially radial portion 3l.

When the )arts are positioned as `shown in Fig. II, the valve 14, is closed and the valve 9, is open, so that the discharge from plate 12, and the plate` the propeller chamber would be through the discharge opening 7, underneath the cage containing the material to be dyed, npwardly through the cage and thence through the passage 13, to the passage at the end of the vat between the side wall 4, of the propeller chamber, and the end wall 5, of the Vat. As the shaft. 19, is rotated, the worin 22, will accordingly turn the inclinedshaft carrying the worm wheel 23, which will in turn slowly rotate the worm wheel 2S, and the shaft 29. By a comparatively .slight movement of the. conntershatt 2S, the flat tace 31, on the cani 29, will throw the rock' arm 17, so as to raise the valve 14, opening the discharge passage S. and close the valve 9, thereby closing the discharge passage 7. The concentric portion 30, et the eain will hold said rock arm with the valve in this position until such concentric portion passes from contact with the rock arm after which the valves and connected parts will at once causethe valve 14, (o close and the valve 9, to open.
l/Vhen the valve 14., is open, the dye liquor will be discharged through the passage 8, above the cage containing the' material to be dyed, downwardlyT through the cage, underneath the Page, and thence through the passage 1l, to the passage way between the end wall 5, of the vat and the side wall of the propeller chamber.

A partition 33, extends across the propeller chamber adjacent each intake and is formed with a circular opening in each ot' which is mounted a propeller.

Also by our construction wherein the operating shaft for the propeller eXtends through the side wall of the vat, We are able to do away with the use of bevel gears in transmitting power to the propellers, which bevel gears would of necessity be located in the dye liquor, and thus reduce to a minimum t-he amount of metal which is exposed to the dye liquor. We have also provided a mechanism wherein the propellers always run `in the same direction, and w crein one propeller takes up the lateral thrust of the other propeller, and furthermore, the opposed propellers will cause the central circulation of the dye liquor through the vat so as to produce a uniform iow through the various parts of the cage holding the dyed material.
' The partition 3, as herein shown, is hin ed as at 45, and may be held in closed position by any suitable means. By the removal of the basket or cage and the grid 46, we are able to swing the partition 3, to the position -shown in dotted lines in F ig. I, which will afford a ready access to the propeller chamber so that the same may bc cleaned cr cleared of any particles of material accumulated therein and clogging the free flow of the dye liquor.
l It is obvious that minor changes in the details of construction and the arrangement of the parts may be made without departing from the spirit of the invention set forth l in t-he appended claims.

A dyeing machine including in combination, a vat; means for circulating a dye liquor through said vat; and a cage for the material being dyed, said cage having a verltical partition forming separated vertical compartments, a horizontal partition form` ing horizontal compartments, said partitions bcing formed with screens, whereby the free tloiv of the dye liquor may be had from one compartment to another, and hinged doors having screens therein for closing the top and bottom coinpartments; and movable .securing means extending across thc free edge of cach bottom door for holding the saine in closed position.

A dyeing machine including in combination, a rat; meansl for circulating a dye liquor through said vat; and a cage for the material being dyed, said cage comprising a rectangular frame having vertical partitions ltherein which are formed with screens; a horizontal partition located intermediate the top and bottom of the frame and hinged at one side so that the same may be readily opened; means for holding said partition in 'closed position; a hinged door at the top of the frame for cach compartment; and a f hinged door at the bottom of the frame for across said vat which terminate short of thebottoln and top of the' vat, whereby a propeller chamber is formed with passages eX- tending around the same; means for closing the top and the bottom of the propeller chamber and for forming a discharge opening at the top and at the bottom of said chamber; swinging valves for controlling said discharge openings; means whereby said valves may be alternately held in open position, said valves when in open position serving to deflect the dye liquor and thereby aid in causing an even circulation thereof; intakes adjacent to each end of said propeller chamber leading to the passage in the rear thereof; and propellers located within said chamber and adjacent said intake. said propellers Vbeing opposed to each other.

A dyeing machine including in combination, a vat; spaced partitions extending across said vat which terminate short'of the bottom and top o f the vatwhereby a propeller chamber is formed with passages eX- tending around the same; means for closing the top and the bottom of the propeller chamber and for forming a discharge opening at the top and at the bottom of said chamber; swinging valves for controlling said discharge openings; means whereby said valves may be alternately held in open position, said valves when in open position serving to deflect the dye liquor and thereby aid in causing an even circulation thereof; intakes peller chamber leading to the passage in the rear thereof, propellers located wit-hin said chamber and adjacent said intake, said proar'ljaiivent to cach end of said probe had through said compellers being opposed to each other; and a horizontal shaft on which said propellers are' rigidly mounted, said horizontal shaft eX- tendirg through one Wall of the vat whereby the operating mechanism therefor may be located outside of said vat.
