Description

K. PAP. AUTOMATIO SHUT-OFF WATER GAGE.
APPLIOATION FILED AUGJ, 1912.
Patented Sept. 9, 1913.
a I ?//////////////////////////////////4/4 7///////////////// 7/////////4/A i ITED sures rarnnr ersten KROLY PAP, OF KoLozsvAR, AUSTRIA-HUNGARI.
p AUTOMATICLSHUT-OFF WATER-ease.
Specificaton of Letters Patent.
To all whom it may cncem Be it known that I, KROLY PAP, a subject of the King of Hungary, and resident of Kolozsvr, Austria-Hungary, have in water-gage, and another defect of most of the devices consists in that the stokers or firemen are liable to be injured by the es- ,caping steam and hot water in *case the glass of the water-gage is broken.
It is one of the objects of the present invention to provide a simple and inexpensve water-gage, by means of which the level of the water in the boiler may be observed within a substantial distance from the boiler, and furtherrnore to produce an automatic safety shut-oflwhereby, as 'soon as the glass of the gage is broken, the supply of steam and water is automatically shut off therefrom. i
With these and other objects in view, which will'more fully appear as the nature of the invention is better understood, the same consists in the combination, arrangement and Construction of parts hereinafter fully described, pointed out in the appended claim and illustrated in the accompanying drawings, it being understood that many changes nay be made in the size and proportion of the several parts and minor details of construction within the scope of the appended claim without departing from the spirit or sacrificing any of the advantages of the nvention.
One of the many possible enbodiments of the invention is llustrated in the accompanying drawings, in which zx Figure 1 is a vertical longitudinal section taken through a safety water-gage constructed in accordance with the present invention; and Fig. 2 is a front elevation of the dial of the same.
In the drawings, the numeral 1 indicates the head of a boiler, and the numeral 6 a closed receptacle, which communicates by means of pipes 2 and 3 with the interior of the boiler. The pipe 2 leads to the steam space and the pipe 3 to `the water space of i theboiler, 'Intothese pipes are inserted valves i and 5, respectively, hereinafter to be described.
guides ll, 11 upon the interior surface of the casing 6. The upper end of the casing 6 is provided with acylindrical enlargement 1 1, which is: provided upon its outer face with a graduated dial 15. `he upper end of 'the extension 9 of the float isprovided with a rack 10, the teeth of which are' adapted to mesh with'those of thetgear segment 12, which is keyed or otherwise attached to a spindle 13, the latter being os-.
cillatably arranged in the front wall of the enlargenent 14 and projecting therethrough. To the spindle 13 is attached'a hand 16, pointing to the graduations'of the dial 15.
The casing 6 is provided in its front wall 17 with a window, which is closed by two` panes of glass 18 and 19, or other suitabletransparent material, said window-panes being, arranged at a substantial distance from each other. A pipe 21 leads from the space between the two window- panes 18 and 19 to the head of a steam cylinder 22, which latter is attached to the boiler head or to any suitable support. VVithin the cylinder 22 is reciprocably arranged a piston 23, the piston rod 24 of which is pivoted to a connecting rod 25, the latter being in a similar' nanner attached to a lever 27, which is keyed or otherwise attached to the plug' of the valve 4. A link 26, pivoted to the connecting rod 25, is in a similar manner secured to a lever 28, which is rigdly connected with the plug of the Valve 5.
The operation of the device is as follows: As the level of the water in the boiler vafor 'a purpose, Within the re ceptacle 6 is arranged a h ollow, preferably,` nietallic fioat 7 the' upwardly projecting extension 9 of which is slidably arranged in' Patented Sept), 1913.
Application filed August l, 1912. Serial No. *712,683.
ries, the fioat 7 will accordingly rise or fall,
and actuate thereby the hand 16 -above described. The level of the water in the boiler can thus be observed from a distant point by exarnining the positions of the hand 16. [f for some reason the inner one of the window-panes, that is the pane 18, should be broken, steam will escape through the pipe 21 into the cylinder 22, act upon the pisten 23 and thereby shut off automatically steam and water fromthe casing 6.
transparent panes which are arranged at a distance from each other, of a hollow fioat in said receptacle, a graduated dial, a hand oscillatably mounted upon said receptacle pointing to the graduations-of the said dial,
. y coperating means upon said fioat and said hand for act-uatng the latter upon the rising and falling ofthe fioat in said recep-- between the boiler and said closed receptacle, a steam cylinder, a pston therein, a
'connection between said piston and said valves, and a steam pipe leading from the space between said two window-panes to said cylinder.
