Application led November 3, 1911. Serial No. 658,416.
' Specicationgoi. Letters Patent.
i Iatented Sept. 9,
To all whom t may concern.'
Be it known that I, OSCAR C. ENGEBRET- soN, a citizenv of the United States, residing at Garretson, in the county of'Minnehaha, State of `South Dakot-a, haveinvented certain new and useful Improvements in Attachment for Fitchforks;V and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact descript-ion of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.
This invention relates to new and useful improvements in attachments for pitch forks. o
An object of this invention is the provision of a device of this character which is adapted to be applied to the prongs lof a pitch fork for the purpose of increasing theirdiameter and converting the same int-o an implement for use in handling corn stalks or the like.
Another objectof this invention is to improve and simplify devices of this character, rendering them comparatively simple and inexpensive to manufacture, reliable and eflicient in use and readily operated.
With the above and other objects in View,
this invention resides in the novel featuresr of construction, formations, combinations and arrangements of parts to be hereinafter more fully described, claimed and illustrated in t-he accompanying drawings in which Figure 1 is a front elevation of one frame of my improved pitch fork. Fig. 2 is a rear elevation thereof. Fig. 3 is a longitudinal sectional view taken on the line 33 of Fig. 1. Fig. 4 is a transverse sectional view taken on the line 4-4 of Fig. 1.` Fig. 5 is a similar view taken on the line 55 of Fig. 1. Fig. 6 is a side elevation illustrating' a modified form of my invention, and Fig. 7 is a transverse sectional view taken on the line 7-7 of Fig. 6. f
Referring to the accompanying drawings by similar characters of reference, the numeral 10 designates generally a pitchfork of the usual construction which comprises a head 11 formed at one edge with a socket 12 for the reception of a handle 13 and at its opposite edge with a plurality of diverging prongs 14.
A pluralityv 0f outer and intermediate the prongs 14 and are provided at their lower terminals with rounded ends 17. The opposite ends of the sleeves 15 are formed with curved channel spring extensions -18 sleeves 15 and 16 are slidably located, upon Enron.
which engage the sides of the head 11 while the sleeve 16 is provided with a spring extension 19 which terminates flush with the extensions 18.V The extensions, 18 and 19 are formed with registering grooves 20 for the reception of a retaining member 2l which is adapted -to hold the extensions against displacement thereby preventing disengagement between the prongs 14 and the sleeves 15 and 16. y.
Referring more particularlyv to Figs. 6 and 7 of the drawings, the extensions 18 and 19 are omitted and the sleeves 15 and 16` are provided with contacting ears 22 which are aliningly apertured as at 23 for the reception of a suitable locking member 24 which holds the converged ends of the - sleeves 15 and 16 rigidly with respect to each other to open the prongs 14 by their diverging relation with respect to each other.
From the foregoing disclosures taken in connectionv with the accompanying drawings it will be manifest that an attachment for pitch forksl is provided for which will be securely held thereon against any undesired displacement, and which will fulfill all of the necessary requirements of such a device.
I-Iaving thus fully described this invention what I claim as new and desire to protect by Letters Patent, is
1. The combination with a pitch fork, of a plurality of sleeves located upon the prongs thereof, extensions formed upon said sleeves conforming to the shape of the head of the pitch fork, and a means engaging the extensions for preventing their displacement from the pitch fork.
2. The combination with a pitch fork, of .l
Ya plurality of sleeves located upon the prongs thereof, spring extensions formed upon the sleeves and conforming in shape to the head of the pitch fork, said extensions being provided lwith registering kgrooves and locking means engaging said registering A grooves.
3. The combination with a handle, and a In testimony whereof, I aiiix my signahead carried thereby and provided With a ture, in presence of two Witnesses.
