Description

tlNl'ihlU @TATES PATENT OFFICE.
JACOB GREENWALD, OF PHILADELPHIA, PENNSYLVANIA, ASSIGNOR TO GREENWALD BROTHERS, INCORPORATED, OF PHILADELPHIA, PENNSYLVANIA, A CORPORATION OF PENNSYLVANIA.
SIlZIlltT.
Specification of Il'ietters Iatent.
Patented Sept. 2, 1913.
To all whom it may concern:
is it known that l, Jaoon Gnnnuwnm, of the city and county of Philadelphia and State of Pennsylvania, have invented certain new and useful improvements in Skirts, of which the following is a specification, reference being had to the accompanying drawings.
My invention relates to a skirt, provided with an expansible waist band, and has for its object to render such a skirt launderable. Ordinary elastic fabric or elastic tape is not hiunderable by reason of the injurious effect of water upon the rubber contained therein, and in order to overcome this difficulty, according to my present invention, I impart elasticity to the waist band of the skirt in the region of the gore, by the use of a removable elastic band.
in the accompanying drawings, Figure I, represents a skirt embodying my invention. Fig. 11, is an enlarged view of the portion of the skirt in the region of one of the goresl Figs. III, and IV, are detailed views of the fastening devices to be described.
The skirt 1, shown in Fig. I, is provided with a placket and with gores 2, 2, each of which is filled with a triangular piece of light fabric, such as fine knit cotton cloth. The waist band is formed by a hem, which is coincident not only with the filling piece of the gore, but with at least a portion of the remainder of the Waist band, and through this hem passes an elastic band or tape Slits' 5, 5, are provided on the outer side of the waist band, from which the ends of the elastic tape project. Eyelets or similar openings 6, 6, are formed in the waist band upon either side ofthe slits 5, 5. The elastic tape is provided at one end with a permanent hook fastener 8, and at the other end, with an adjustable hook fastener 9.
In ordinary usage the elastic band lies within the hem, with its ends projecting through the slits 5, 5. The hooks on the two ends engage the eyelets 6, 6, the adjustable hook being so set as to put the desired tension upon the band to cause it to properly gather the filling of the gore.
W hen the skirt is to be laundried, the elastic band, with its two fasteners, is unhooked and withdrawn from the hem, within which it is readily reinserted after the skirt has been laundried.
Having thus described my invention, I claim:
A skirt provided with a gore; a hem eoincident with the region of the gore and slotted on both sides thereof; an elastic band freely and removably contained within said hem; a fastening device permanently attached to one end of the band; a fastening device adjustably attached to the other end of the band; complementary fastening devices attached to the waist band of the skirt one on either side of the gore, and beyond the corresponding slot in the hem, whereby said band may be normally inserted within the hem coincident with the region of the gore, with its ends projecting through said slots, and anchored to produce the desired tension by means of the complementary fastening devices, but with capacity for ready detachment and withdrawal for the purpose of permitting the laundrying of the skirt.
In testimony whereof I have hereunto signed my name at Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, this fourth day of October, 1910.
JACOB GREENWALD.
