UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
WILLIE E. HOUGAS AND FERDINAND W. RAUCH, OI? LAMONT, IOWA.
WIRE-SPLIGER.
Patented Sept. 2,1913.
. Application filed May 9, 1912, Serial No. 696,111. Renewed February 7, 1913. Serial No. 746,926.
To all whom it may concern Be it known that we, .WILLIn E. HOUGA$ and FERDINAND W. RAUGH, citizens of the United States, residing at Lamoni, in'the county of Decatur and State of Iowa, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Tire-Splitters, of which the follow ing is a specification.
Our invention relates to devices for splicing wires and consists in the provision of a splicer of the plier type having the sides of the j aws provided with grooves to receive the wire to be spliced and a transverse opening in the jaws to receive the wire on which the splice is to be made.
Our invention has for its object the pro vision of means by which a splice can be effected by means of plier type tools by giving them a motion through an arc of 90 instead of as is generally necessary through an are of 180 or a complete circle rotation.
Our invention also has for its object the provision of a tool of the type described having a provision for splicing wires of different thicknesses.
Our invention will be described in detail hereinafter and illustrated in the accompanying drawings, in which,
'l igure 1 is a side view in elevation of our improved tool showing it applied to a splice; Fig. 2, an edge view of the tool; and
Fig. 3, a side view of the opposite side to that shown in big. 1.
In the drawings similar reference charactors will be used to designate corresponding parts througl'iout the several views,
()ur improved wire splicing tool consists of the plier type tool indicated at 1 having its two jaws pivotally secured together at 2, the two jaws being formed as shown with substantially semicircular formations 3 and 4- on one side and 5 and f) on the other side. Each of said semicircular formations has a groove running parallel with the engaging edges of the jaws designated 7, the groove in the formation 2) being indicated 3 that in 4, l", in 5, 5", and in (3, f5. Each of said jaw members is also provided with a groove perpendicular to the grooves just described and indicated at it" in jaw 3, 4 in jaw 4, 5 in jaw 5, and 6" in jaw (i. The jaws are also provided with a central opening indicated at 8, to receive the line wire 9 on which the splice is to be made.
In use, it will be apparent that the improved tool as shown in. Fig. 1 may be used in making splices in wire structures, the, opening 8 being formed to receive the wire on which the splice is to be made and indicated at 9 in Fig. l. The wire that is spliced on the wire 9 indicated at 10 is wrapped around the wire 9 by means of our tool, the free end of the wire being engaged b one of the grooves on one of the faces of the jaws and by giving the tool a quarter turn, it will be apparent that an effective splice may be made. By providing the jaws with grooves of different widths as shown in the drawings, it will be apparent that our tool is adapted to use with wires of different thicknesses as the smaller grade wires are adapted to be operated upon by the jaw faces 3 and 4, while the heavier wires are operated upon by the jaws 5 and 6.
Having thus described our invention what 7.) we claim is 1. A wire splicer of the plier type having its jaws provided with grooves on its two sides arranged crosswise of one another and of different widths.
2'. A wire spliccr of the plier type having its jaws provided with two faces having grooves on each face arranged crosswise of one another and at right angles to each other, and the grooves on the two faces of the jaws of ditlerent widths.
3. A wire splicer of the pliter type having the meeting edges of its jaws formed with openings to receive a line wire, the two Faces of the jaws formed with grooves arranged at right angles to one anothe' and radially of said openings, the grooves on the two sides of the jaws being of different widths and adapted to receive the end of the splicing wire. 3
In testimony whereof we aflix our signafurcs in presence of two witnesses.
