Description

W. B. FOWLER.
REGULATING DAMPER.
APPLICATION FILED D20. 6, 1912.
Patented Sept. 2, 1913.
COLUMBIA PLANOGRAPI! ISO-,WASHINOTON. D. c.
WALTER B. FOWLER, O1 LAWRENCE, MASSACHUSETTS.
BEG-ULATING-D AMPER.
Specification of Letters Patent Patented Sept. 2, i913.
Application filed December 6, 1912. Serial No, 735,278.
To all whom it m'c z concern Be it known that I, \Varrrnn l3. FOWLER, citizen of the United States, and resident oi Lawrence, county of Essex, State of Massachusetts, have invented. certain new and use :tnl Improvements in ltcgulating-Dampers, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to regulating dampers of the type disclosed in Letters Patent of the United States No. 984,550, granted to me February 21, 1911, and is intended to render more perfect and delicate the action of such dampers beside facilitating their adjustment tor different conditions of service.
in the accompanying drawings, Figure 1 is a side elevation illustrating the proper :lorm oit' embodying the present invention; Fig. 2 is a front elevation thereof slightly broken away; and Fig. 3 is a plan view.
According; to the form of my invention illustrated in the drawings, I employ a cas' ing a preferably of cast iron, similar to the casing shown in my aforesaid patent. This casing is open on one side, the edges oi said side projecting inwardly slightly to form a continuous flange a to overlap the edge portion of the damper Z).
The damper Z) is preferably made oi sheet metal, and is riveted or otherwise secured to a supporting bar or axis 7) whose ends rest on the ledges a for pivotal support, said supporting bar being provided intcrl'nediate of the fulcral or supporting points with an arm or lever 7) intended to carry the adjustable countei.'-weip;lit c. This adjustable counter-weight c is made to extend both for 'ard an (1 back transversely of the pivotal axis oi the damper, and is shii'ted transrersely in order to vary, to any desired extent, its position according to the degree of counter-balance eiiect desired. To this end the counter-weight is made of an elongated bar longitudinally slotted to receive a binding screw 0 which clamps it directly to the arm 6 At this point the arm 5 is pro vided with an elongated block or lug b which fits easily into the slot so as to prevent any pivotal or turning; movement of the counter-weight 0 in relation to the supporting; arm 7) this integral lug serving as a guide to maintain a permanent angular relationship between the counter-weight and the arm.
Since the studio; pipes of some heaters carry a stronger dra t than others, it is desired that the regulator for any given smoke pipe be easily set to the proper predcten mined position, normally demanded by the conditions oi. the draft to which it. is applied. However, it is also desirable in order to expedite the action oi the draft when the tire is low to temporarily shiit the position of ihe counter-in]lance. To meet these conditions the counter-bulance has been made ot only adjustable in the uninncr described, but is also i'uriher provided. with an adjustable page (I consisting of a wire rod passed through one end oi the member (2, so as to project into the interior slot, said rod being booked at the outer end in order to be more easily gripped, and being :uljustably held in place by means of the thumb-screw (Z'.
in practice the aiieiuiant sets the gage member (Z to that )rcdetermined position which he iinds appropriate to normal service on the particular heater, and then when startingup the fire quickly the counterbalance may be shifted to the er of the damper axis as far as desired to insure its remaining closed even under a strong; draft. \Vhen the fire has burned up to a suiiicicnt degree oi. intensity, the (301111i'QIdDilltHiCO is then shifted forward until the gage member (I abuts against the arm If, thus involving, no delay or trouble when securing the proper adjustment ior normal service.
it is, of course, intended that the casino; (1 is attached directly to the smoke pipe 0, and that in actual operation when the draft becomes too strong in the smoke pipe, it automatically opens or draws in the damper Z), so as to admit the outside ai and check the drai'l. the iirc dies down the iiorcc of the dralt lessens and the countcr-balance tends to return the damper to closed position, thus tending once more to strengthen the draft and increase combustion.
i have found that by locking the counterbalance midway oi. the iulcral supports, the damper is much more sensitive to slight variations in the draft than when the counterbalance is carried on one end oi. the damper axis, as in my :iormer Letters Patent. Moreover, by using an elongated bar overhanging each side of the axis, I can get a greater range and delicacy oi adjustment.
To increase the range and eiii'ei'ztivencss for special conditions, I add a detachable weight-piece c screwed to one end of the conliter-balance weight, which may be removed if found to be unnecessary for any particular location. This dispenses with the need of making difierent sizes of counterbalance plates.
hat I claim is: V
1. A draft-regulating damper embracing in its construction a casing open at one side, a damper p'ivotally mounted to close said open side, aprojecting Weight-carrying arm or lever projecting from said damper, an elongated counter-balance plate extending beyond said arm transversely on either side of the pivotal axis and a clamping nut carried by the supporting lever passing through the slot in said counter-balance in order to adjustably clamp the counter-balance plate to the lever, substantially as described.
A draft-regulating damper embracing in its construction a casing open at one side, a swinging damper pivotally mounted to close said open side and having a projecting iveighhcarrying lever, a slotted counter-balance plate mounted transversely to the axis oisaid damper andadjustably held to said lever by a slot and screW connection, a gage member arranged to limit the adjustable movement of the counter-balance plate in relation to the supporting lever, substantially as described.
3. A draft-regulating damper embracing in its constructmn a casing prov ded with an open side, a swinging damper suspended to close said open side, a Weight-carrying lever secured to said damper between the fulcral points of support, a counter-Weight adjustably clamped to said lever and shiftable transversely to'the axis of said damper V construction a casing, a damper sWingably mounted thereon, a Weight-carrying arm, an elongated longitudinally slot-ted plate, means for detachably clamping said slotted plate transversely of the damper axis, an adjustable gage member for limiting the adjustment of said counter-balance at a predetermined point and means for holding said gage member in its various positions, of adjustment, substantially as described.
In Witness whereof, I have subscribed the above specification. V
