Description

JAMES A. ELLIOTT, 0F EYCMI-Dfilfl, 'ILIIINOIE'L BROODER.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Pat-outed Sept. .85, 1913.
Application filed March 8, 1913. Serial a to. 753,849.
To (ZZZ whom it may concern:
Be it known that it, JAMEs A. Enmo'rr, a citizen of the United States, residing at Sycamore, in the county of Dekalb and titatc of Illinois, have invented new and useful Improvements in Breeders, oil which the :following is a specification.
This invention relates to broodcrs or brooding coups, and it has for its object to produce a simple, inexpensive and eliicicnt device of the class specified for raising incubator chicks.
A. further object of the invention is to produee a device oft the class described including a body structure and a rcvoluble door struct-ure,the latter including doors or closures of (litter-cut kinds, such as a screen ddor, a slat; door and'a solid door, any one or whicha may be presented in registry with a door aperture in the body structure.
A further Ob'JGClZ oft the invention is to produce a device of the class described which shall be vermin-proof and sanitary, which may be easily maintained in a clean and sanitary condition, and which shall. have no corners that the chicks may crowd into.
A further object of the invention is to produce a simple and efficient device of the character described, which, in addition to the features enumerated, shall be provided with a removable lid or-cover through which access may be had to the interior.
With these and other ends in view which Will readily appear as the nature of the invention is better understood, the same consists in the improved ctinstruct-ion and novel arrangement and. combination of parts which will behercinafter fully described and particularly pointed out in the claims.
In the accompanying drawings has been illustrated a sire is and preferred form of the invention, it eing, however, understood that no limitation is necessarily made to the precise structural details therein exhibited, but that changes, alterations and modifications within the scope of the claims maybe resorted to when desired.
In the drawings,--Figure lis a side elevation of the body structure with the rcmovable door structure detached. Fig. 2 is a perspective view, showing the rcvoluble door structure detached. Fig. 3 is a vertical sectional view of the complete device. Fig. 4 is horizontal sectional view taken on the line 4--4 in Fig. 3.
(lm'respmding parts in the several figures are dcnoltcd by like characters of rclcrcucc.
The body structure oi? the improved device consists of a sheet. metal vessel A having a cylindrical wall 5 and a *Ilat bottom 6 surrounded by a head 7. The cylindrical wall 5 is provided near its upper edge with a circumferential head 8. A conical lid or cover 9 is provided, said iid having an annular flange 10 which is provided with bayonet slols ii to engage ,p'insor studs 12 that project from the wall 5 ofthe vessel A above the flange 8, for the pin rose of asser'nbling the lid with the body or the vessel. Said lid is provided with, a handle 13, wl-rcreby the device may he carried, and the lid is provided at the apex of its conical JOIt'iO'I'l with a ventilating flue 14 protected ivy a conical cap 15 and having ventilating apertures 1'6. The wall of the body portion is provided with a door opening 17. i
A door structure is provided which consists of a st'ri) 18 of sheet metal or other suitable material, said strip being provided along its upper and lower edges with bands or straps 19 of hoop '11'011 or other similar material. The strip 18, together with the straps 19, is bent into an approxirnatcly'cylindrical form, and the straps or bands 19 are provided with terminal outstanding lugs 26) which are aperturcd 'fo'r the passage of connecting members, such as bolts 21 having nuts 22, whereby the ends of the straps are connected together to form a substantially cylindrical structure, as clearly seen in Fig. 2. The straps 19, however are of greater length than the strip 18 so that a vacant space will occur between the end edges of said strip. The hoops or hands 19 are of such length as to fit around the cylindrical wall 5 of the body structure, the parts be ing so proportioned that by tightening the nuts 22 on the bolt 21, the door structure, which rests on the head or flange 7, may be secured in any position to which it may be adjusted.
It will be seen that by loosening the nuts 22, the door structure may be rotated about its curls and that of the body structure A so as to place the open space between the end edges of the strip 18 in registry with the .door aperture 17 in the wall 5 of said body structure. The strip 18, moreover, is provided with apertures 23 and 24, which are partly obstructed, respectively, by allO 30 the handle 13.
screen 25 and by slats 26. Either of these apertures may be placed in registry With the apertures 17, Which latter will thus be partly obstructed either by the screen 25 a which will prevent the passage of chicks or by the slats 26 which may be spaced apart to permit small chicks to pass while larger fowls will be excluded. The strip 18 also has a solid portion which when placed in i registry with the aperture 17 will entirely obstruct the latter. As previously stated, the door structure may be secured in adjusted position by simply tightening the nuts 22.
The body structure A may be interiorly- 1- llned or protected against cold in any suitable and well known manner which, however, is no part oi. the present invention.
It will readily be seen that I have provided a simple and inexpensive brooding coop which is particularly convenient and useful in that by simply removing the lid, access may be had to the interior at any time, while by adjusting the revoluhle door structure provision may be made for the free or the limited entrance and exit of chicks,
or the admission and exit of the chicks may be obstructed with or without interfering with the ventilation. The entire coop with contents may be conveniently carried by The body portion of the coop being in the nature of an ordinary cylindrical sheet metal vessel may be very easily maintained in an absolutely clean and sanitary condition. It is also evident that the improved device may be conveniently made in different sizes, and that differ ent sizes may be nested together for transportation. h
i-lavi 11g thus described the invention, what is claimed new, is:-
1. A brooding coop comprising a cylindrical vessel, the wall of which has a door aperture, in combination with a revoluhledoor structure including a hoop-shaped band having terminal lugs, .and means whereby said lugs are adjustably connected together.
2. A brooding coop comprising a cylin-. drical vessel having a flat bottom surrounded by a bead, in combination with a cylindrical door structure supported on said bead,
and means whereby said door structure may be tightened about the wall of the body structure to retain 1t i'rictlonally against dlsplacemcnt.
A broodlng coop comprising a cyl1ndrlcal vessel constituting a body structure and having a door aperture in the wall thereof, in combination with a cylindrical door structure surrounding the wall of the body structure and having solid and aperof the body structure to maintain it trim tionally against displacement.
In testimony whereof I affix my signature in presence of two witnesses.
