Specification of Letters Patent.
Paten ted Sept. 2, .i 91.3-
Applieaton tiled April t8, 1913. Serial No. 761,866.
.To (dt miami f/'' may conm/rn Be it known that T, KoNs'raN'rr DonnoworisIiI, a subject of the (Izar ot Russia, residing at New York eity, borough oi Brooklyn, eounty oit Kings, State o't New York, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Vrenehes, et' whieh the following is a tull, elear, and exaot deseription.
This invention relates to an improvement in wrenches, the objeet being to provide a eombination wrench adapted tor use either as a pipe wrench or as an ordinary wreneh.
My imjn'oved wrench is provided with reversible jawanembers, one side oft laeh jaw-member being plain, another side. being serrated or provided with teeth.
My improved wrench has other 'features of improvement, all of whieh 1 will now proceed to deseribe in detail, and the novel t'eatures oit whieh will point out in the appended claim, reiterenee being had te the accompanying drawings, 'forming part hereotf, wherein z- Figure .l is a side view of my improved wreneh, partly in seetion; Fig. 2 is a top plan view thereof, partly in seetion; Fig.
e is an enlarged side view partly in seetion et the ad'ustable 'awsmemberz ltiO. Ll- Vis adetail sectional plan view, the sertion being taken on a line irlft in Fig. 3; Fig. 5 is a detail perspective view oit one ol` the jawbloeks; Fig. t3 is an enlarged detail elevation of the clutch-member oit the wrench; Fig. 7 is a longitudinal sectional view thereot; Fig. 8 is an enlarged side elevation oft the adjustable wrench member showing the side opposite to that illustrated in Fig. 53; Fig. 9 is a eross-Aseetional view, the section heilig taken on a line 9--9 in Fig. 2; and Fig. l0 is a similar view, the section being taken on a line 10----1O in Fig. 1.
As herein illustrated my improved wrench Consists ot a handle Comprising ehanneled members l and 2 `which at one end are provided with heads 3 whieh when the handle lnembers are assembled serve as a retaining element 'for a jaw-bleek Lt. The bleek L is provided with guideways 5 whieh receive guides 6,'earried by the heads 23, within the pocket 7. Viithin the Channel 8 of the handle I slidably mount the reetangular shank 9 ot an adjustable jaw-mem ber which carries a head 10 provided with a pocket 11. Vithin the pocket 11 I removably mount a jaw-bleek 12, the said bleek being held in position by a pin l which 'passes through the top l-/lo'tf the head 2l. the bleek '12, and into a socket 15 in the shank 9. The pin 'll is held in plare by a set serew 16. To plaee a tension on the bleek 12 and also to hold it square relative to the bloek t, l employ a spring 17 which is secured to the shank by a set-screw 1 8. The. Din 13 is provided with an opening Q0 by which means, in Connection with a speeial tool 2l., the said pin can be removed. When not in use the tool 21 is held in a recess Q0 in the shank 3 (see Fig. The tool Q2 is held in the shank by the wall E23 ot the handle member 1, as shown by dotted lines in Fig. 2. To get at the tool, the adjustable jaw-member will be pulled out enough to allow the tool to be taken out of' its recess. Normally or rather :t'or ordinary use the adjustable jaw-member 'will never be extended enough to expose the tool to view, and consequently the tool will al rays be rarried by t-he wrench, when not in use, and will therefore always be handy when needed.
its ean he seen Vin Fig. 5 the jaw-member is provided with a plain 'laee 24; and a serrated liaee 25, the 'faee 24 being used :for
nuts, 'For instaure, and the :tare 25 'tor pipes.
The bleek l2 is also provided with a plain 'tare JU and a serrated 'tare 2i', Yt'or the same purpose. 'lo position the bloeks to adaptthe wreneh :for nuts or pipes the blocks et and 12 will be reversed. ly removing the serew Q8 the bloek 41- ean be removed and reversed, the sere'w heilig again tightened to hold the block. ly removing the pin 13, the bloek 152 ean he removed aml reversed. To remove the pin 1S l make use ot the tool 2l, uhieh is provided with a pointed portion 29 whieh ean be inserted in the opening Q0, at which time the pin 1Q ean be removed a'tter the setsrrew 1G has been slaekened oll' or removed. To manipulate the serons 2S and 11', use the srrmv-driver end 30 of the said tool Q2.
lo hold the adjustable jawmember in an adjusted position to suit a given size nut. or pipe, make ustl ol a speeial elamp which engages the threaded spindle QS) carried by the shank t), and whieh is located in the bored portion il() o't" the handle. As can be seen in Fig. i), the clamp, indicated by 31 lfig. t, (can be manipulated exteriorly of the handle and its `lunetiion is to grip the threaded spindle and hold the adjustable j aw member rigid after adjustment. The clamp 8l is fitted in a pocket 32 in the handle'and will not have any end lash. c.
Referring to Figs. 6 and 7, the clamp or clutch of the wrench consists of the members 33 and 8e, each of which is provided with rounded faces or edges 35 and 3G, One.
end of each clamp cr clutch-member 83 and 34. is flared as at 37, one of said members being' provided with a leaf-spring 38. Said clamp-members are prevented from separat-- in@ lonoitudinallv bv means of a tonone 39 i I3 -l u D and socket its can be seen in F102 the clutch mem- ?J 3 i n bers 33 and 34 are threaded. as at lll 9 throughout portion cf the length, thel said threads beingr adapted to engage the threads on the spindle 29 when. the clutchmembers are forced together as in Fig. 6 by? means of a slidable clamping ring 42 and manipulating' plate 43. and plate e3 occupy a position at the left end lWhen the ring` 42 i tudinally of the handle, for the reason that the teeth el will be caused t-o leave the teeth of the spindle. lhen the ring 49. and plate Q,
are moved to the right the ring 42 will strike the spring 38 and press it downwardly, the tongue 39 and socket 40 being the pivot point, the ring and plate passing over the spring 38. By referring to Figs.;
6 and 7, it will be seen that the leaf-spring 8S, which is mounted upon the clamp inember 33, is provided with a downwardly` turned end, adapted to enter a recess 33a in the clamp member 33, the object of this leafspring being to lock the ring 42 and adjacent follower plate 4:3 in thc clamped position (see Fig. 6). To release the ring and follower plate, the said leaffspring 38 is depressed, whereby the ring and plate are free to be moved. Stops 44 are provided to limit the left hand movement of the plate and ring. To prevent the adjust-able jaw-meinber from being Withdrawn from the handle, I provide a stop 44a which works in a groove #l5 in the shank 9 (see Figs. 8 and 9). Should the adjustable jaw-member become jammed, a rod or other implement can be passel through the opening 45 in the end of Athe handle and knocked against the end of the spindle 29.
jlaving now described my invention in detail, what l claimV and desire to secure by Letters Patent is:
A wrench consisting of a handle, a jawineinber carried thereby, a slidable shank carried by said handle, a jaw nember caii-ied thereby, a clamp carried by said handle adapted to engage said shank, said clamp comprising a plurality of members, a ring surrounding said members, and a leaf-spring carried by one of said clamp members, 'the leaf-spring carrying clamp member being provided with a recess, said leaf-spring iaving an intur-ned end adapted, when depressed, to enter said recess.
Signed at New York ity, N. Y., this 16th day of April, 1913. Y
