EMILE DOB-DELATTRE,
OF LIEGE, BELGIUM.
GAS-PRODUCER.
Application filed July 24, 1911.
Specification of Letters Patent.
flatented Sept. 2, 15.913.
Serial No. 640,182.
To all whom it may concern lie it known that I, EMILE Donl)nm'r'rnn, subject of the King of Belgium, residing at Liege, Belgium, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in (irasdroducers; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.
The present invention relates to a gas producer in which the poking by hand, which is very trying work for the workmen, but upon which depends the correct working of the apparatus and the proper production of the is obviated, and is replaced by a mechanical operation which is under the absolute control of the operator in charge of the producer, who can give to the apparatus various movements at his discretion.
The characteristic feature of the invention consists in producing an energetic stirring-up or agitation of the coal during the continuous working of the furnace, which agitation has the effect of greatly increasing the production of the gas, of closing the fissures or openings which are produced, as soon as same are formed, and of preventing the formation of large pieces of coke. These two latter results assure a uniform composition of the gas.
The stirring up of the coal contained in the gas producer is effected by means of a cone, carried by a readily controlled column or plunger, arranged in the passage or shaft at a higher level than that of the ashes and slag, and through the medium of which the mass of coal can be wholly or partially raised; the admission of air necessary for combustion taking place, at a lower level than that of the cone, through a grate, preferably arranged vertically, and over which the ashes fall into a trough or channel, forming a hydraulic joint, and from which they can be readily removed during the working of the producer. Owing to the arrangement of the trough into which the ashes are admitted through a large opening of constant size, it is not necessary to provide any supplementary mechanism for their elimination.
The accompanying drawing represents, by way of example, and in vertical section, one method of carrying out the invention.
The gas producer comprises a fixed shaft a, of any suitable type, and into which the coal from which the gas is to be obtained is introduced by a hopper 7). The shaft (6 is closed, at its lower end, by a rotatable base 0 in the form of a circular trough filled with water up to a certain height and forming a hydraulic joint. This trough is arranged to receive the slag and ashes which fall throi'lgh the annular passage formed between the interior of the shaft and a vertical grate (Z. The rotating base 0 comprises, moreover under the trough or channel, a chamber 0 adapted to receive the line ashes which pass through the grate (l; cleaning holes f are provided in the chamber e.
The grate (Z is arranged vertically in the central part of the base 0 and is in one piece with a conical head or cap kept cool by a current of water. The whole arrangement comprising the grate (Z and the head is carried by a column i connected to the piston h of a hydraulic press, which admits of raising the grate (Z and its head 7 vertically. In the example represented the lowering of the head and the grate (Z is effected by the weight of the parts; this movement, as well as the lifting movement, can, however, be obtained by any other mechanical means.
The admission of the cooling water to the head is effected by the hollow column 2', supplied from a pipe The water passes away through the pipe 7: and siphon Z, while the hydraulic joint or is also supplied by the water issuing from the overflow pipe 71:. Air is blown under the grate (l from the pipe n.
The working of the apparatus is obvious from the above description.
1. hen the only movement to be obtained is that of raising and lowering the grate (Z, the trough 0 remains stationary, and it is only necessary to admit water under pressure beneath the piston h of the hydraulic press. During the lifting this piston it raises the hollow column 2' and consequently the grate (Z and cap 9. The speed of lifting, its extent and frequency can be easily controlled by regulating the admission of water to the hydraulic press by means of suitable valve. This raising and lowering of the grate (Z and of the cap 9 puts the coal continually in motion and stirs it up over the whole surface.
2. The vertical movement of the grate (Z can be accompanied by the rotation of the trough c which greatly facilitates the clearing of the ashes. This double movement causes, moreover, a better agitation of the coal. The rotation of the trough 0, which is always very slow, is obtained either by means of pawl and ratchet mechanism, or by worm gearing. The raising of the grate is effected in this case the same as previously described, these two movements are quite independent "of one another;
3. The grate (Z, while having a rising and falling movement, also turns with the trough c. This latter, as it rotates, drives the hollow column 71 by means of a. fixed key 0;
The two movements described under headings 2 and 3 are preferably only employed when using coal which is readily convertible into coke, with the object of preventing the formation of fissures during the vertical displacements of the grate.
I claim: p

2. In a gas producer, the combination of a fuel chamber, a fuel support arranged centrally within the lower portion of the chamber, and having a substantially conicalshaped section adapted to be surrounded by the fuel, means for adjusting said support vertically, and means for admitting air to the fuel chamber at points beneath the fuel support and movable vertically with said support.
3. In a gas producer, the combination of a fuel chamber, having an aperture in its bottom, a fuel support of less diameter than the chamber having a depending grate-like member extending into the aperturein the bottom of the chamber, and means for adjusting said support vertically.
4. In a gas producer, the combination of a fuel chamber, having an aperture in its bottom, a fuel support of less diameter than the chamber having a depending grate-like member extending into the aperture in the bottom of the chamber, means for supplying air to the spaceinclosed by said grate-like member, and means foradjusting said support vertically.
5. In a gas producer, the combination of a fuel chamber open at the lower end, a r0- tatable annular trough surrounding the lower end of the fuel chamber, a fuel agitating device supported at the axis of the trough and extending into the fuel chamber, and means for effecting vertical reciprocation of said device.
6. In a gas producer, the combination of' a fuel chamber, a fuel support arranged within the chamber above the lower end thereof and having an upper section adapted to be surrounded by the fuel and a central downwardly extending stem, means c0- operating with the stem of the fuel support for adjustingit vertically, and an air conduitsurrounding said stem and opening into the fuel chamber below the fuel support.
7. In a gas producer, the combination of a fuel chamber, a hollow fuel support arranged centrally of the lower end of the chamber and. provided with a downwardly extending tubular stem, means for supplying water to they interior of the fuelsupport through the tubular stem, an air conduit surrounding the stem of the fuel support and opening into the fuel chamber, and means for adjusting the fuel support vertically. l I v I 8 In a gas producer, the combination of a fuel chamber open at its lower entl, a trough surrounding the lower end of the fuel chamber and comprising two concentric sections 0, e, a fuel agitating device surrounding the upper end of the inner member of the portion 6 of the trough and extending into the fuel chamber, and means for vertically reciprocating said device.
