MAN'rcunINe IMPLEMENT.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented Sept. 2, 1913.
Application filed July 21,1911. Serial No. 639,735.
To all whom it may concern Be it known that I, HORACE A. SuYMomm, a citizen of the United States, and a resident of the city of New York, borough of Manhattan, in the county and State of New York, have invented a new and Improved Manicuring Implement, of which the following is a full, clear, and exact description.
My invention relates in general to a new and improved form of manicuring implement, and particularly relates to a buffer.
An object of my invention is to provide an article of the above-described character which may be readily held in the natural position in the hand.
A further object of my invention is to provide a buffer of the above indicated character which may be readily and cheaply constructed and the different parts of which may be easily replaced.
I attain the above outlined objects by making the buffer of a cylindrical or substantially cylindrical shape and of a length to be grasped at its ends between the thumb and little finger.
With the above and other objects in view, as will more fully hereinafter appear, the present invention consistsin certain novel details of construction and arrangement of parts hereinafter fully'described, illustrated in the accompanying drawings, and more particularly pointed out in the appended claims.
Reference is to be had to the accompanying drawings, forming a part of this specification, in which simllar characters of refcrence indicate corresponding parts in all the figures, and in which Figure 1 is a perspective view of a preferred embodiment of my invention, the de vice being covered with chamois, to form a buffer; Fig. 2 is a view similar to Fig. 1 but showing an outer covering of kid turned back to disclose the internal construction, the device in this instance being used as a polisher; Fig. 3 is a view similar to the preceding figures but showing a buffer or enameler of a substantially rectangular configuration; Fig. 4 is a transverse sectional view taken through either Fig. 1 or 2; and Fig. 5 is a similar view taken through the disclosure shown in Fig. 3.
In order to form a cheap, readily constructed inner core 6, a section of tubular material, preferably of pasteboard, as, for
instance, a mailing tube, is cut the desired length, as shown in Fig. 4. This inner core me also be of the rectangular shape shown in 'ig. 5. About this inner core is wound a layer or layers of soft fabric or any suitable matcrial. This will form a soft, pliable foundation for the covering 8 of chamois or kid, depending upon whether the device is to be used as a buffer or as an enameler. As shown, this covering 8, is constructed in the form of an open-ended tube of a length somewhat longer than the length of the mailing tube 6 and its surrounding padding 7. In order to form this covering with a smooth outer surface, the edges 9 are folded back upon themselves, the abutting edges 10 of which are sewed together by means of a blind stitch. The protruding ends of the covering 8 are forced into the open ends of the mailing tube 6 and are held in place by means of a cap 11, which cap has a stem 12 fitting within the opening in the mailing tube 6, and a head 13 hearing on the padding 7, the covering 8 and the end of the tube 6. a dished face 14, to fit the face of the thumb and little finger.
The device is held between the thumb and little finger of one hand, while the intermediate fingers rest on top of the covering 8, thereby forming a buffer or enameler which may be held in a natural position, and in which the fingers may exert a pressure upon the body of the device. The device in this position may readily be rotated, to bring new unused portions of the covering 8 into operative position.
If desired, a substantially rectangular buffer or enameler may be constructed, as shown in Figs. 3 and 5, by making the inner tube square in cross section. The loose padding 7 will run off the edges so that when the outer covering 8 is drawn over the padding 7, the device will have the rounded edges 15 somewhat resembling in contour, the cylindrical device shown in Figs. 1, 2 and 4 but having flat intermediate working surfaces 16. If desired, instead of the form of button shown in Figs. 1 and 2, a squareheaded button 17 may be used with pyramidal surfaces 18, or any other form of button which will form a gripping surface disposed at an angle to a plane at right angles to the longitudinal axis of the buffer to facilitate the frictional retention of the dc- This head has vice between the thumb and finger of the gripping hand.
lVhile a preferred embodiment of the invention has been described, it is to be understood that many changes could be made in the above construction and many apparently widely different embodiments of this invention could be made without departing from the scope thereof. It is intended that all matters contained herein in the above description or shown in the accompanying drawings, shall be interpreted as illustrative and not in a limiting sense. It is also to'be understood that the language used in the following claims is intended to cover the full scope of the invention and is not to be given any narrower construction than the prior art demands, and that materials, sizes and relativities of parts are non-essential, except as called for in the claims.
Having thus described my invention, I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent:
1. In a handleless manicuring implement, a buffer, comprising a tube, a padding inclosing said tube and of a length equal to the length of said tube, a covering inclos ing said padding and of a length greater than the length of said padding and proj ecting beyond each end thereof, said project-- ing ends extending Within said tube, and a cap at each end of said tube, said cap having a stem projecting within said tube and forcing the projecting ends of said covering into engagementwith the bore of said tube, said cap also having a head bearing on the end of said padding and tube and of less diameter than the buffer, to 'hold between them a portion of said covering, said head having finger-retaining means thereon, whereby the implement may be held between the thumb and'finger of one hand.
2[ In a handleless manicuring implement, a substantially cylindrical buifer having a covering thereon, means at each end of the buffer adapted to retain said covering in place, said means consisting of caps, each cap having a concave dish-shaped outer face affording means by which the device may bedheld from slipping by a finger at each en 3. In a handleless manicuring implement, an integral cylindrical hollow member having a polishing covering thereon, said covering extending beyond and within the ends of said hollow member, and means closing the ends of said member and holding said covering in position by forcing, said ends covering in opposite directions on said hollow member.
4. A handleless manicuring implement, consisting of a tubular member, a covering on said member having its opposite ends extending into the adjacent ends of said member, and a cap at each end of said member, said caps having stems projecting into said member, forcing the ends of said covering into engagemnt with said member, each of said caps having a head bearing on an end of said member and covering, the bounding edges of said caps being positioned within the outlines of said member and covering, to prevent said caps contacting with the finger nail when the same is operated upon.
In testimony whereof I have signed my name to this specification in the presence of two subscribing witnesses.
