y".lheslcheule referredto ix these Letters Patent and making part of the same.,
To whom it may concern: l
Be in known naar, EZRA RANSQM, of Flint, in the' county of- Genessee and State of Michigan'7 have in-l vented a new and useful- Improvement in thel Construction and Method of Packing Rotating Valve- Stems'; and 1 do declare that the following is a truc and accurate description thereof, reference being had to the accompanying drawing and to the letters of ref v erence markedthereon, and being a part of this specification, in which- Fignre'l is a vertical sectionof my improvement; Figure 2 is a detached vertical section ofthe packing-nut; and
Figure 3 is the saine of the gland land packinghox.
Like letters indicate like 'parts in'each figure.
The natu're of this invention rela'tes to animprove-v..
ment in the construction and method of `packing rotating valve-stems, and consists` in the peculiar coustruction and arrangement of the packing-nut with relation to the packing-box and a valve-stem having a thread. cut on its outer end, so-that the thread is notnut C, threaded internally to receive the valve-stemA D, having a thread, d, cut on its o'uter orupper ex-l tremity. W v
Tow or other suitable packing surrounds the valvestem in the borerof the packing-box, which is compressed by the gland, which latterA is pressed down-. ward by the nut engaging with the exterior thread, of i Ithe packing-box, leaving the stem to be moved freely.
up or down in the nut, the nntC- being prevented from moving by the jam-nut A being screwed up againstfit.
" It will be noticed that the screw of the stein does .not pass into or through the packing, nor is it sub- 'mitted to the action of steam or water, as is the case with valves and stems of the usual constrnction..
, It will be further seen that the thread may belubri# cated at any time, and that the valvemay be ground in its seat by simply nnscrewing the packing-nut andl rotating the valve-stem, -proyided the valve is properly secured to the stem, such lubrication and grinding notbeing possible in the construction of the valves now 1n use.
W'hat I claim as my invention7 and `desire to secure by Letters Patent, isl The combination and arrangement of the packingnu't O, the packing-box A, the gland B, the jam-nut A', andthe threaded valve-stem D, when the several parts are constructed as described andshown, and as and for the -purposes se't forth.
y l EZRA RANSOM.
