BENDING-MACHINE.
Specification of Letters Patent.
.Patentcd Sept. 2, 1913.
Application filed December 26, 1912. Serial No. 738,683.
To all whom it may concern Be it known that T, llonnn'r A. Cnn'rnn, rcsiding at Pittsburgh, in the county of. Allegheny and State of Pennsylvania, a citizen of the United States, have invented or discovered certain new and useful Improvements in Bending-Machines, of which improvements the following is a specification.
In the accompanying drawings forming a part of this specification, Figure 1 is a top plan view of my improved bending machine; Fig. 2 is a sectional elevation on a plane indicated by the line II--ll Fig. 1; Figs. 3 and t are transverse sections on planes indicated respectively by the lines I [IIII and I V-IV Fig. 1; Figs. 5 and (i are plan views of a portion of the machine and illustrate progressive stages in the bending operation; and Fig. 7 is a detail view illustrating a modification in the shape of the former.
In the practice of my invention two rotatable disks 1, are on the bed plate 2 of the machine and are provided on their run dersides with hubs or journals 3 which extend down into bearings formed in the bed plate. These disks are oscillated back and forth by means of a slide 1 arranged intermediate the disks and adapted to be reciprocated by any suitable means. This slide is provided on opposite sides with series of teeth 5 intermeshing with the teeth formed on the peripheries of the disks 1. The disks are provided with eccentrically arrangedv pins 6, adapted when the disks are rotated by the movement of the slide l to the right in Figs. 1, 5 and 6 to bend the ends of the blank at around studs 7, the axes of which are coincident with the axes of rotation of the disks. As it may for some purposes be desirable to bend the ends of the blank (I. through arcs greater than ninety degrees, it is preferred to make the studs vertically movable so as to disengage the studs from the blank, as would be necesary for the further shaping of the blank as hereinafter described. As shown in Fig. 3 the studs extend down through the disks their hubs 3 and the bed plate of the machine and are connected to a cross-bar 8. This cross-bar is shifted to lower and raise the studs by any suitable means which should be controlled by the slide l. The construction shown in Fig. 2 is suitable for the purpose and consists of a bell crank lever 9 having one end slotted to receive the cross-bar 8,
while the opposite end projects up into the path of movement of hooks 10, 10 on the underside of the slide i.
in forming a link, the slide 4 is moved to the left in Fig. 1 shifting the disks so that the pins (3 are behind the studs 7. A blank (4 is then placed between the studs and pins, the longitudinal position of the blank being determined by the stop 11, which is preferably secured to one of the disks. in order to prevent any distortion of the middle portion of the blank during the bending of the ends, the blank when placed in position is passed between jaws l2, 12 which are carried by a block 1?, adapted to be shifted by the slide 4t as hereinafter described. One of the jaws as 12 is so attached to the block that the middle portion of the blank when in position will rest in a groove in said jaw. The law 12 is pivotally mounted and adapted to be shifted by a cam l4 to grip the blank. This cam is provided with an operating handle 15 so arranged that it will be turned by a stop 16 to release the blank after a certain rearward movement of the block 1.3. After the blank has been placed in position and gripped by the jaws 12, 12 as shown in Figs. 1 and 2, the slide i. is moved to the right thereby turning the disks in opposite directions carrying the pins around the studs 7 in which movement the ends of the blanks are bent as shown in Fig. 5. If the bends imparted to the ends of the blank are greater than ninety degrees or so that the blank cannot be moved horizontally to the right, the hook 10 on the slide will engage and shift the bell crank 9 thereby putting down the studs from engagement with the bent ends of the blank. This shift ing of the studs is timed to occur at the completion of the bending action of the pins 6.
As it may be desirable in forming chains to effect the interengagement of adjacent links in the bending machine provision is made for so supporting a shaped link that a blank in being fed to the machine will pass through such link. This can be convem iently effected by so slotting the gripping jaws 12, 12 as to support the link as clearly shown in Figs. 1., 5 and 6. As the slide et continues its movement to the right after the ends of the blank have been bent, the end of a forming block 17 secured to the slide and having its front end notched as shown in Fig. 1, will engage the shaped link held in the jaws 12, 12 and push said jaws back or to the right in Fig. 5. As the blank a is firmly gripped by the jaws it will be drawn to the right until its ends clear the studs and the portion of the blank on opposite sides of jaws are about to bear against rollers 18, arranged on opposite sides of the path of movement of the forming block 17. At this moment the handle of the cam 14 strikes against the stop 16 and the tail of the jaw 12 will move down releasing the blank. As the slide continues its movement after the release of the blank, the forming block having in its front end one side of the bent blank Z), passes between the rollers 18, which cause the blank to bend around and conform to the contour of the forming block. On the reverse movement of the slide 4, an adjustable abutment 19 on the slide will, after the slide has moved sufliciently far to move the forming block from between the rollers 18, and to pull the bent blank I) from the slots in the jaws 12, 12 strike against the block 13 carrying said jaws and move them into proper relation to line of feed of a new blank. When it is desired to bend the blank without causing them to interlock with shaped links, a forming block 17 may be employed as shown in Fig. 7.
I claim herein as my invention:
1. In a bending machine, the combination of two rotatable disks provided with eccentrically arranged pins, studs having their axes coincident with the axes of rotation of the disks, a slide arranged to reciprocate intermediate the disks and adapted to rotate the latter in opposite directions, and jaws adapted to grip a blank intermediate the portions operated on by the pins while the ends of the blank are being bent.
2. In a bending machine, the combination of two rotatable disks provided with eccentrically arranged pins, studs having their axes coincident with the axes of rotation of the disks, a slide arranged to reciprocate intermediate the disks and adapted to rotate the latter in opposite directions, and means for shifting the studs vertically to release the blank.
3. In a bending machine, the combination of means for simultaneously bending both ends of a blank, stationary rollers. a movable forming block adapted to reciprocate be tween the end bending means and between the rollers, and means for shifting the forming block to move the blank from the end bending means, and force it bet-ween the rollers whereby the blank is bent around and caused to conform to the contour of the forming block.
4- In a bending machine, the combination of means for bending the ends of a blank,
a forming block movable intermediate the end bending means, jaws adapted to grip the blank during the end bending operation and movable by the forming block to shift the blank away from the end bending means, bending rollers arranged on opposite sides of the line of movement of the forming block, and adapted to bend the blank around the forming block and means for opening the jaws prior to the engagement of the blank with the bending rollers.
5. In a bending machine, the combination of two rotatable disks provided with eccentrically arranged pins, studs having their axes coincident with the axes of rotation of the disks, means for rotating the disks simultaneously in opposite directions, and a stop carried by one of the disks for determining the position of the blank.
In testimony whereof, I have hereunto set v my hand.
