Be it known that we, HENRY ALEXANDER TURNBULL, GEORGE FREDERICK FRANCIS DA- ms, and ARTHUR JOHN BARKLY TURNBULL, subjects ofthe King of Great Britain, residing at 50 Newton street, Surrey Hills, State of Victoria, Australia; 39 Caniberwell road, Camberwell, State of Victoria, Australia, and 50 Newton street, Surrey Hills, State of Victoria, Australia, respectively, have invented new and useful Improvements in Steam-Generators, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to a steam generator of the water tube type.
Among the objects which this invention has in View are while generating steam at high or low pressure, to automatically keep its own water level; also to automatically maintain a predetermined steam pressure; to provide against priming to raise steam quickly; to work with almost perfect safety, to enable one or more of the tubes to be removed and replaced without stopping the working of the generator.
This generator is adaptable subject to variations in form and details for land engines, marine engines, and general locomotive appliances, and other purposes where steam is required.
The essential feature of our invention is the provision of series of elements in which the supplied water is converted to steam, each consisting of a tube bent back and forth to form horizontal members, the bends at the ends being extended vertically into bulb-like form and lying directly above one another. The elements are all connected to a water drum and to a steam drum and a water level is maintained in the elements.
One embodiment of the present invention is illustrated in the accompanying drawings forming part of the specification in which like characters of reference denote corresponding parts.
Figure 1 is a sectional side elevation showing a generator constructed according to this invention. Fig. 2 is a front elevation of the same.
A chamber 1 of brickwork or iron is provided in which are the generator tubes 2 constituting the elements hereinafter described. At the bottom is a furnace 3 adapted for burning coal or other kinds of fuel.

Above the furnace are positioned say for example twelve elements 2 side by side. A description of one will apply to all. The bottom end of the tube element is connected with a water drum or distributer 4 positioned laterally outside the chamber. Inside the chamber this tube 2 is continued in a series of bends backward and forward the bend at each end being spread or extended vertically into a bulb like form and the lower part of each bulb portion resting on the upper part of the lower bulb. The lowest bulb is supported by a suitable cross bar 2*. At each bend the tube forming the element is returned above the preceding length. The top end of the tube is extended to and connected with a steam drum 5 also positioned laterally outside the generator chamber. Each element is connected to the steam drum and the water drum respectively by suitable unions 6 outside the generator chamber. This allows when any element becomes worn or damaged its easy removal and the substitution of another element so that the work can proceed.
Situated vertically at any desired height between the steam drum 5 and the water drum 4 is a feed water regulator consisting of a closed chamber 7 containing a hermetically sealed float 9 connected with a valve (not shown) for controlling the admission of water through pipe 17 to the chamber 7. The feed water chamber 7 is connected by pipes 18 and 19 with the steam drum and water drums respectively. The steam drum and the water drum are also connected by the tubes 8 for the purpose of allowing unobstructed connection between the said drums other than through the elements. There is a steam off take 5.
On the top of the chamber 1 is a circular tube 33 in which is arranged a butterfly valve or disk 34 fixed upon a shaft 35 extending horizontally through the tube. One end of shaft 35 carries an arm 40 with an adjustable weight 41 which tends to turn the shaft 35 and so keep the butterfly disk 34 in a horizontal position. The steam drum 5 is provided with a safety valve 43.
The float chamber of the feed water regulat-or is placed at a height corresponding with the pre-determined height of water level as line aa in Fig. 1 and thus secures the automatic operation.
By means of our invention the water is maintained at a constant level which may be about half way up the height of the ele ments though it is not limited to any par ticular height. It will be seen that in operation the lower half of each of the elements will be filled with water while the upper half is filled with steam passing from the water surface to the steam drum and being superheated during such passage.
Claims:
1. In a steam generator of a furnace, a water drum exterior of the furnace, a steam drum also exterior of the furnace and above the water drum, and a series of tubes in the furnace and having one end eonneeted with the water drum and the other with the steam drum, each tube being bent back and forth to form horizontal members disposed one above the other, the bends at each end being extended vertically into a bulb -like form, the bulbs lying directly above one another and serving to assist in retaining the water at a predetermined level in the tubes, the upper portions of the said tubes serving as a super-heater.
2. In a steam generator, a furnace, a water drum exterior of the furnace, a steam drum also exterior of the, furnace, and above the water drum, a series of tubes in the furnace and having one end connected with the water drum and the other with the steam drum, each tube being bent back and forth to form a plurality of horizontal members disposed one above the other, the bends at each end being extended Vertically into a bulb-like form, the bulbs lying directly one above the other with the lower portion of one bulb resting upon the upper portion of the bulb next below, and means for maintaining the water level about one half way up in the said tubes.
