In my Patent No; 736,775, of August 18,
p 1903, I have described an apparatus espetilt tilt) cially adapted for punching strlps of paper or the like, such as are used in the operation of various machines, especially in automatic rapid telegraphy systems of the type described in Pollak and Virag Patent No. 675,495, dated June l, 1901.
The present invention relates to certain improvements upon the aforesaid class of machines and provides improvements in various features described in the following specification and claims.
The accompanying drawings illustrate the principal parts of a machine embodying the invention.
Figure I is a vertical section, and Fig. 2 a horizontal section partly in plan of the apparatus embodying my improvements. Fig. 3 is a side view at right angles to the plane of Fig. l of a lever for locking the notched sector hereinafter referred to. Fig. 4 is a side elevation of a blade and keys for opcratin it.
In the apparatus to which these improvements are applied the strip to be perforated is held in a slot of the perforating matrix in which are engaged the heads of the punches which are supported by counter punches. Each of these may be held up by the action of an inclined plane on a blade displaced for this purpose by the depression of a key on the keyboard, so that the unchperforates the strip when the latter is lowered by an electromagnet energized .at each depression of a key of the keyboard. At the same time a notched or stepped sector firmly connected with an arrangement for moving forward the strip of paper, receives an angular displacement in accordance with the length of the sign perforated and controlled by a rocking lever, also actuated by the displacement of a blade so as to draw the band of paper forward to a corresponding extent as soon as the latter has returned to its raised position of repose.
The improvements which form the object of the invention are intended to diminish the stroke or extent of movement of the keys of the keyboard and to insure greater ease in the manipulation of the latter so as to obtain greater rapidity in manipulation, with less fatigue for the operator. These improvements consist, 1, in maintaining the counter punches constantly raised, the displacement of the blades having simply the eifect of placing the latter beneath the punches which are to make a perforation so as to pre- ':vent them descending with the perforating matrix, and to force them to perforate the strip of paper; the result is that the blades in their displacements have no work to do, whence less force need be applied to the keys of the keyboard, and at the same time in consequence of the inclined plane being dispensed with, the movement of each blade is reduced to an extent corresponding to the said plane. 2. In also reducing the angular displacement of the lever locking the notched sector which controls the feeding forward of the paper, the number of notches in the said sector being 'thus reduced by one half in comparison with the number in the same member in the aforesaid patents, each notch producing two positions of this sector. This is obtained by the combination with the stop lever of a slide piece having two parts in steps corresponding to the total height between two notches; thus for a single angular displacement of the lever two difi erent positions of the sector may be obtained by means of the two steps of the slide, which is also moved for this object by a special blade. These improvements may, however, be applied to any apparatus of a similar type to that referred to for perforating paper strips in which the keys of a keyboard operate the displacement of blades with a wow to determining the working position of the punches which enter into the combination of a sign to be perforated.
Referring now to the particular embodiment of the invention illustrated, the heads of the punches a are engaged in the per forating matrix b; they pass freely through the lidc of the box 0, and rest by means of shoulders a on a plate 01 through which their extremities pass; beneath the latter the upper ends of the counter punches a are held, which themselves rest by means of shoulders a on a plate 6, the lower ends being engaged in a fixed plate f covering the box f 'in which the blades slide. Itwill be seen that the blades have no work to do during their displacement by the keys and consequently this displacement is reduced to the slight sliding movement necessary for bringing the heel f of the blades beneath the counter punches which are to be kept raised, and thus the stroke of 1 the keys may be reduced, while the inclination of the planes 3 y of the blades may be increased so as further to reduce by this fact the pressure to be exerted on the keys. As the stems w of the keys act simultaneously on the inclined planes of the blades F F, etc, and on 'the inclined planes of the blade F which controls the displacement of the lever j causing the stoppage of the oscillation of the notched sector h, in order to avoid the inclined planes of this blade F having to extend too far horizontally, 2'. e., having a diminished angle of inclination, and thus offering too much resistance to the depression of the key, the displacements of thls blade and conse uently those of the lever 7' are diminished; For this purpose the sector 72., as already stated, has the number of its notches reduced by half compared with the number hitherto necessary, andinstead of being locked directly by the lever j rockin on j, it is locked by one of the two stepped planes i i of a slide 71 mounted in a dovetail on the end of the said. lever y. This slide is connected to a lever having two arms i a" rocking one", the arm a" of which so operated b o the blade F is engaged be stopped in twodifierent ositions for the same extent of oscillation o the lever j, and the result is, that these oscillations, and consequently the displacements of the blade F are reduced by about one half,'which enables the inclined planes of this blade to be made steeper for'the same depression of the keys.
What I'claim is 1. An apparatus of the class described, includi in combination perforating punches, blades avin inclined planes, keys acting on said inclined planes to move said blades, counter punches constantly held in raised position to hold up said perforating punches, and means adapted to be introduced into the paths of said counter punches by the several lades without raising'said counter punches so as to cause the latter to force the perforating punches through the paper when the paper 'is moved, while ermittin the punches which are unatfecte by said blades to move freely with the paper.
2. An apparatus of the class described, ineluding in combination perforating punches a, counter punches a suspended immediately beneath the perforating punches by means of shoulders a on said counter punches, and means adapted to be introduced into the paths of said counter-punches without raismg said counter-punches so as to cause the latter to. force the perforating punches through the paper when the paper is moved down upon them, while permitting the punches which are unaffected to move freely with the paper.
3. An apparatus of the class described, having a notched sector, the movement of which determines the amount of feed of the strip of paper, and means for controlling the movement of said sector comprising a stop having two parts at different heights, either of which is adapted to be introduced into the path of said notched sector, and means for moving each part of said stop into and out ofthe path of said sector.
