To Q53 whom may condena:
Be it known that, MICHAEL BLUME, a eitizenof the United States, and a resident of the city or" Caio-ago, county of Cook, and State oi illinois, invented cert-ain new and useful improvements in Micrometen Apers, of which the following is a 'specilviy inventionlrelates 'to improvements in calipers and more speciically tothat class thereof eliaracterized because of the adaptability thereof for mieroinetrio adjustment.
'ihe object of iny invention is the production of a caliper of the char-acte;` inentioned which he readily and quickly 1' ftd to `nearly the proper dimensions ad tien as easilyr and expeditiously' adjusts-dto the exaot measurement.
r further object is the production of a Caliper as mentioned which will he of dura hle and economical construction and eiiicient in i 1 @ti er oojeets will a pear hereinafter.
The invention consists in the combina.- tions and arrange ents of parte hereinafter described claimed.
My invent-ion Wili ne heetunderstood by the accompanying dranf'ing forming-a part of this specification, and in which is side elevation of a micrometex caliper embodying my invention7 Fir? 2 is a vertical central longitudinal section thereof, portions however being sho 7n in elevation, Fig. 3 is a slightly enlarged detail section tellen on line 3--3 of Fig. l, and i is a sectional detail of the outer'end portion 0:5 the caliper steelt.
The "peoried forni of iny construct-ion as ilhistrated in the dra-Wing comprises a tubular stock #eonsisting of the tubular portiene i and f2, the adjacent ends of the memb rs l and 2I being telesco' ed and preferably secured rigidly together y shrinking. Secured rigidly upon one end of the stock or upon the outer endof the member l is the fixed jaw E which is of ordinary design. Surrounding the outer end portion of the member 2 is a sleeve Li' which is tightly fitted thereon, the saine being held in posi friction. Provided upon one side of the outer suace of the sleeve et is a c ries'oi gadnations 5, divided according to any standard desired, es inches, the numbered gradnations being tenths of inches vneetion 11i and the and the smal-ler divisions fort-ieths. Provided at one end of the sleeve i is a porteration 6 which aords means for engagement by a circular wrench for effecting rotary adjustment of said sleeve in order to properly position the longitudinal graduation with respect to graduations on the barrel as will be presently described. The barrel just referred to is shown at Y, the saine being slidahly and rotatably mounted upon the sleeve d. @ne end ot said barrel is cireunferentially graduated, the graduations 8 being arranged for cooperation with the lonzitudinai graduation upon said sleeve 4, the adjacent terminal edge of said barrel tions 5 .in the manner Well known. The oir`- onniferenee of barrel 7 may oedivided into any number of sections, that is the graduations 8 he any desired distance apart, said circui'nierenee being however divided preferably into twenty-live notions in order that measurements in thefthonsandths or an inch may be made as set forth hereinafter. The opposite end of the barrel 7 is 'preferably knurled shown in onder to 'aciiitate rotation thereof oy the fingers. Said end oi said barrel is provided internally with a tapering seat 9 for the reception of the oor.-
respondingly formed end l@ o1" a screw ll arranged eo-axial with said harel. The screw il engages the adjacent end portion of the stock member 2 which is internally screw threaded to receive the same, the outer end oit' 'said screw being provided with a cylindrical extension l2l 'which'slidably cn-' gages the opening through the members l Q .in order to maintain said screw in proper axial position in the stock. E he internally threaded end of the member 2 is also split longitudinally and the outer sur-, face. thereof is ta Jering in forni and screw' threaded. Threaded upon said tapered poi"- tion is a collar 13 through the medium of Whieh said end o said block member 2 .may be Contracted in order to .take up Wear lupon the internal thread of said block member or upon the threads of the screw 11. Said screw il is securely locked to the barrel 't' through the medium ofthe threaded con.` cap l5 so thatrotation of said barrel will ei'i'eot corresponding movement of said screw and honte longitudinal feeding of Said barrel, By reason of the peealiar conoeation letween *the cooperating with the transverse' graduaf,
