LEATHER-STAKING MACHINE.
To all whom 2f may concern Be it known that I, EMIL J. E QUIRIN,
a citizen of the United States, resident of Tioga Center, in the county of Tioga and State of New York, have made a certain new and useful Invention in Leather-Staking Machines; and l declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the same, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the invention, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, and to letters or figures of reference marked thereon, which form a part of this specification.
Figure 1 is a side view of the machine. Fig. 2 is a central vertical section of the forward portion of the machine. 3 is a front view of the machine. Figfll is a detail perspective view showing the means for moving the tiltable frame and the blade carrying wheel toward the roller carrying wheel.
The invention has relation to leather stak-k ing machines for simultaneously stretching nd scraping leather, having for its object ertain improvements upon the machine of y Patent Number 1,036,335, dated August so, i912.
The invention consists in the novel conv struction and combinations of parts, as
hereinafter set forth.
1n the accompanying drawings illustrating the invention, the numeral 1, designates the supporting frame of the machine, carrying at its forward end a rotary shaft 2, and above and somewhat in rear of the same a second rotary shaft 3. The lower rotary shaft is provided with a wheel 4, carrying a plurality of radial staking blades 5, of steel or other suitable material, said blades in the rotation of the wheel projecting through a slot 6 in a platform or table 7. rl`he upper shaft 3 carries a wheel S, having at the free ends of radial arms 9, thereof, a plurality of staking rollers 10, one less in number than the blades 5, and located within the intervals 11 between said blades, said rollers being covered with felt or other suitable material. The front edge portion of the leather being worked may be held by the workmans hands or by his chest against the forward edge of the table at 12. The blade-carrying wheel 4 is preferably mounted in bearings at the upper end of a tiltable frame 13, said frame being pivotally mounted at its lower end upon the main Specific-ation of Letters Patent.

frame at 1st. rlhe frame 13 is substantially vertical, and in its pivotal movement the blade-carrying wheel is moved in a substantially horizontal direction toward and away from the roller carrying wheel. Means are provided to rotate the upper shaft and its roller carrying wheel consisting preferably of wheels or cranks 15 at each side of the machine, and connecting rods 16, the rear wheels or cranks being located upon a power shaft 17, having tight and loose pulleys 1S, and means are provided to rotate the lower shaft and its blade carrying wheel consisting preferably of a chain 19, passing over a sprocket wheel 20 upon the shaft Q and over a sprocket wheel Q1 carried by a shaft 22 at the rear end of the machine below the power shaft with which it has a gear connection at 23.
The blades of the wheel el, are normally held away from the rollers of the wheel 8, for insertion of the leather to be worked, preferably by means of an arm 24, pivoted at one end to the main frame at 25, and carrying at its outer end a wheel 25, around which the chain passes, said arm having at its outer end a weight 27, under the influence of which the wheel 26 presses againstl the chain to take up the slack thereof and to move the wheel l backward after it has been previously moved forward. A guide wheel for the chain is provided at 27, adjacent to the wheel QG, both of the last named wheels being at the angle of the chain. from which the chain passes upward to the sprocket wheel 20.
Means are provided to move the tiltable frame 13 and the blade carrying wheel toward the roller carrying wheel to press each blade against its roller, consisting preferably of a vertical shaft 28, having upper and lower rotary bearings supported from the main frame, said shaft having at its lower end a wheel 29, to which are oppo sitely fastened the lower ends of cords or cables 30, said cables passing around guide rollers 31, upward to Vlinks 32, having operative connection with toggle links 33, said toggle links having at one end pivotal connection with forward extensions of the main frame at 34;, and at their opposite ends pivotal connection with the upper portion of the tiltable frame at 35. The vertical shaft 28 is turned by the knee or leg of the workman to move the tiltable frame for the purpose stated, said shaft having radial extensions 3G or other suitable means for this purpose. In the operation of the vertical shaft the roller or wheel 29 is turned to wind oppositely thereupon the cables 30, and at the same time to actuate the toggle links to a position approaching alinement, the pressure brought about in this way being very forcible and greatest at the end of the movement.
Having thus described my invent-ion, what I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent is 1. In a leather staking machine, a bearing against which the leather is designed to be pressed at one end to retain it in position, a movable frame, rotary means for simultaneously scraping and stretching the leather including a wheel having a plurality of staking blades projecting therefrom at intervals, a second wheel carrying a plurality of staking rollers, said rollers and said blades having intermeshing engagement with each other, one of said wheels having journal bearings in said movabley frame, means for rotating the two wheels, and means for moving said movable frame and the staking elements of o-ne wheel toward the staking elements of the other wheel.
2. In a leather staking machine, a bearing against which the leather is designed to be pressed at one end to retain it in position, a movable frame, rotary means for simultaneously scraping and stretching the leather including a Wheel having a plurality of staking blades projecting therefrom at intervals, a second wheel carrying a plurality of staking rollers, said rollers and said blades having intermeshing engagement with each other, the blade carrying wheel having journal bearings in said movable frame, means for rotating the two wheels, and means including a lever operated rotary shaft and toggle levers for moving said movable frame and the blade carrying wheel toward the roller carrying wheel.
3. In a leather staking machine, a bearing against which one end of the leather is to be wheel toward the staking elements of the other wheel.

In a leather staking machine, a bearing against which the leather is to be pressed at one end, rotary means for simultaneously scraping and stretching the leather including a wheel having a plurality of staking blades, a second wheel carrying a plurality of staking rollers in intermeshing engagement with said blades, means for rotating the two wheels, and means including a vertical lever-operated rotary shaft and toggle levers for pressing the staking elements of one wheel toward the staking elementsV of the other wheel. 70
5. In a leather staking machine, a bearing against which the leather is to be pressed at one end, a substantially vertical frame having a pivot at its lower end, rotary means for simultaneously scraping and stretching the leather including a wheel mounted at the upper end of the vertical pivoted frame having a plurality of staking blades, la second wheel having a plurality of staking rollers in intermeshing engagement with said blades, means` for rotating the two wheels, and means for pressing the stakin elements of one wheel toward the stakin elements of the other wheel including a sub stantially vertical rotary shaft, toggle levers, and flexible means connecting the toggle le-` vers with said vert-ical shaft.
