To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, AUGUSTIN HENTSOHEL, a subject of the German Emperor, and residing at Berlin, Germany, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Goffering-Presses, of which the following is a specification.
This invention involves certain improvements in and relating to goffering presses and the like, and the objects and nature of the invention will be readily understood by those skilled in the art in the light of the following explanation of the accompanying drawing illustrating what I now believe to be the preferred mechanical expression or embodiment from among other formations, arrangements and combinations within the spirit and scope of the invention.
My improved apparatus is specially distinguished from gof'fering machines or like apparatus known heretofore by the peculiar, suitable cooperation of its individual parts and by the provision of means at both ends of the press for transporting the material and keeping it flat before and after it has been goffered.
One illustrative embodiment of my invention is represented by way of example in the accompanying drawing in side elevation.
My apparatus comprises, on the one hand, a press having a stationary plate a and a vertically movable plate 6, both of which can be heated and are so large that even quite broad, double widths of goods can be stretched and treated between the same, the press being operated by knee-levers for example. In the illustrative embodiment the bottom plate I) can be raised and lowered by knee-lever transmission by rotating the shaft 0 by means of two hand levers (Z arranged one at each end of the shaft. On the other hand, my apparatus comprises the goffering tool which consists of a plate-shaped counter-die e, and the appertaining matrix f pivotally connected at g with the former and balanced by a counter-weight h secured to one end of two ropes 7c guided over pulleys z, the other ends of these ropes being hooked into the side-pieces Z of the counter-die 6. At both sides of the bottom plate I) are secured two rails m. In front of the press I arrange a table which is preferably a lattice grid resting on the rails m and the supports 12. At each end of the rails m is suspended a roller 10 and g, respectively, on each of Specification of Letters Patent.

My new apparatus is used as follows :-At first the material 2 to be goffered, which has been previously moistened and preferably contained in a traveling box 2 at the rear of the apparatus, is passed over roller 9, apron s and between counter-die e and matrix f to the front end of the latter; plate a is then lowered onto matrix f and the goffering tool thus charged is pushed between the heated press-plates a and Z).
Owing to the weight of the portion of material 2 between the roller 9 and the top layer of material in the box 2 and to the friction of the material with the apron s the portion of the material a located rearwardly of the tool is transported and supported back by apron s and roller 9, the latter being rotated in consequence of weight g descending. Hence the apron s and its tensioning means constitute a transporting means for this rear portion of the material or web 2. After the goffering tool has been pushed between the plates a and b, by rotating levers (Z the press is moved and the pattern of the counter-die is impressed in the material 2. As in most instances, particularly when goflering piled goods, the material is moistened, the steam generated by the heat ofplates a and b has a fixing effect on the pattern. After this action has taken place for a suflicient time, the press is opened by raising levers (Z, the goffering tool is pulled forward and opened by raising the counter-die e. The embossed portion of the material a lying on matrix f is then removed from the same and the material is pulled so far forward that the next part lies on the matrix. The above described operation is then TGPEZLtGC L When the goffering tool is pushed into the press for the second and subsequent times, the previously embossed portion of the fabric, which may be in a box 0 in front of the apparatus, is carried, supported or transported rearwardly on the front apron 1", which unwinds from roller 79, and slides over the grid or table, while the rear apron s, is simultaneously being pulled rearwardly by and wound on its roller q. \Vhen the goffering tool is moved forwardly from the press, the rear apron s, is thereby pulled forwardly and is unwound from and against the tension of its roller g, while the front apron 9, is simultaneously pulled forwardly by and is wound on its roller 2), and hence carries, or supports the embossed portion of the fabric forwardly for deposit in the front box 0.
It is evident that various changes, variations and modifications might be resorted to without departing from the spirit and scope of my invention as defined by the claims and hence I do not wish to limit myself to the exact disclosures hereof.
What I claim is 1. In golfering apparatus, the combination with a press, of a goifering tool movable into and out of said press and adapted to receive the material to be goifered, and. means at each side of said press for transporting material extending beyond the getfering tool.
2. In gofl'ering apparatus, the combination with a press, of a goifering tool com prising a matrix and a counterbalanced counter-die pivotally connected therewith, movable into and out of said press and adapted to receive an entire breadth of material to be golfered, and means at each side of said press for transporting material extending beyond the goffering tool.
3. In goffering apparatus, the combination with a press, of a goflering tool movable into and out of said press and adapted to receive material to be goffered, a table in front of said press, and means for transporting material extending beyond the ends of the goifering tool.
4. In goifering apparatus, the combination with a heatable press, of rails through the same, a folding goffering tool movable longitudinally of said rails, rollers at the ends of said rails, aprons attached to said rollers and to said tool, and means acting on said rollers to rotate the same to wind their aprons thereon.
5. In combination, a press, and a golfering tool movable into and from said press and adapted to golfer successive portions of a length of material, said tool beingmov' able to and from the press in a direction longitudinally of said length of material, said material being movable longitudinally of said tool to present successive portions to the tool and movable longitudinally with the tool as the tool is moved to and from the press, said tool being provided with means moving therewith to support and maintain the material in flat condition while the tool is being moved to and from the press.
6. In combination, a press, and a golfer ing tool movable into and from said press and adapted to cooperate with said press in goifering successive portions of a length of material, and means movable with said tool to carry and maintain the portions of the material beyond the tool in flat condition.
7. In combination, a press, means co6perating therewith to successively golfer portions of a length of material, and supporting aprons provided with controlling means for portions of said length of material extending beyond said first mentioned means.
8. In combination, a press, a gofiering tool movable into and from the press and adapted to successively receive and operate on portions of a length of material, and an apron forming an end extension of said tool and provided with automatic winding means.
