' AUGUST RICHTER, OF WEEHAWKEN, NEW JERSEY.
WINDOW CHAIR AND STEP.
Specification of Letters Patent. Patented Aug. 12,1913.
Application filed April 16, 1912. Serial No. 691,111.
To all whom it may concern Be it known that I, AUGUsT RICHTER, a citizen of the United States, and a resident of lVeehawken, county of Hudson, and State of New Jersey, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in lVindow Chairs and Steps, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to improvements in combined. window chairs and steps, and particularly to that class adapted for use in connection with cleaning the windows in dwelling houses. Its objects are, first, to provide means whereby the interior of an ordinary window is rendered accessible to a person operating on it from within the building, and second, to provide means combined whereby the exterior of such windows are readily reached from the outside. These objects are attained by the novel construction and combination of parts hereinafter described and shown in the accompanying drawings, forming part of this specification, and in which Figure 1 is a perspective view of an embodiment of my invention, illustrating its application to the outside of a window. Fig. 2 is a sectional detail of construction. Fig. 3 is a perspective view indicating its use as a step, and Fig. 4 is a side elevation of the apparatus folded or closed for storage or transportation.
The device comprises a pair of light cleats 10, disposed parallel below a chair seat 11, to which they are firmly secured by means of bolts 12 and 13; the cleats 10 have on their lower sides metal straps 14, extending from the rear to the front, where they are bent over the end, thence outwardly to a point beyond, where they are folded upon themselves, forming a plate 15, and a hole 16, made therethrough; the upper members of the straps are extended rearwardly in such a manner as to embrace the cleats 10, the bolts 12 and 13, passing through both members as well as the chair seat and cleats, At the rear end of the cleats are attached, by hinges 17 struts 18, normally disposed at an angle and further connected to the cleats by pivoted link members 19 and 20, so arranged that when the struts are folded the back can take relative to the seat is con-- trolled by the length of the flexible supports 24, which are attached to the sides of the chair and its back respectively as at 25 and 26. At the extreme outer ends of the cleats 10, and to the rear of the chair seat 11, is rigidly attached a platform or step 27, disposed in substantially the same plane as the chair-back when the latter is eX- tended; this step is brought into use by folding the chair-back against the seat, which is turned so as to assume a Vertical position, the plates 15 and cross-bar 21 at that time resting on the floor, the struts extended and the step horizontal. In this position it may be made use of for any purpose that a step might be required as well as in adjusting or cleaning windows from the inside.
When it is desired to use the device on the outside of a window a pair of stout hooks 28, are secured on the outer sill of the window casing, in register with the openings 16, formed in the straps 14, which are hung thereon, the cross-bar 21 resting against the outside of the building as indicated in Fig. 1. This provides a safe and comfortable means for sustaining a person engaged at work upon the window and obviously is easy to move from window to window, each being previously provided with similar hooks.
When not in actual use the device may be compactly folded and occupies a relatively small space.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent is In a device of the class described, a seat, cleats extending along its side edges on its bottom, metallic straps between said seat and cleats, said straps being bent double In testimony whereof I have signed my upon themselves at then forward protrudname to tlns speclficatlon 1n the presence of 111g ends W1th eyes formed therethrough, two subscrlblng wltnesses.
and extending rearwardly partially en- AUGUST RICHTER. shrouding said cleats and a platform rigidly itnessesz affixed transversely across the ends of said Rosn GOLD-KLANG,
cleats. l VARREN E. WILLIS.
